“Feels like home”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

Ancestors are from here so I always enjoy returning. The abbey is really lovely. It can hold it's own with other cathedrals we have visited. It is beautiful and the grounds are a nice walk. The cafe right behind is great for a tea & snack.

“Lovely gardens being spoilt”
Reviewed 9 August 2013 via mobile

Love the gardens but they are being spoilt by dog owners not pickinh up poos and locals and tramps drinking in the gardens which puts me off going with my child.

“Waltham Abbey”
Reviewed 26 July 2013

Waltham Abbey is situated just off the M25 Jct 26, close to the A10 Great Cambridge Road, yet despite its close proximity to London this small town has an old world charm. Minutes away in one direction, the juggernauts roar past, in another direction the normal urban landmarks of MacDonalds and Burger King sit at road Junctions. Waltham Abbey Church sits in its own little bubble. Apparently the original church was built about 600ad at the behest of the Saxon King of the time. A newer stone church was built and in the time of King canute Waltham Abbey became a place of pilgramage. One of these Pilgrims was Harold Godwinson ( yes, he of the arrow at the Battle of Hastings) who in thanks rebuilt a much grander church in 1060 ad which was rebuilt in the 12th Century. Parts of this Church form the Abbey we see today and there is an indication of King Harold's Resting place in the Churchyard. The Abbey is open daily (subject to Services) and the peaceful Abbey Gardens open all the Time. On the day of my visit the Crypt was closed. If you like History and old churches, this is well worth a visit. There is free parking for 2 hours outside the Abbey itself, If full, there is a long stay car park close by. Near to the Abbey Gardens is a delightful pub.
