“Advertised as Southends 'Finest' - couldn't be further from the truth”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2009

They say 'never judge a book by its cover' and how true this is of this hotel! On the outside the hotel looks nice, clean and worth the money they charge.....on the inside it is dirty, old and in need of modernisation. The carpets, as mentioned by others that have reviewed this ghastly hotel, are old and shabby with the decoration just as bad. The channels on the old TV didn't work either and the floor boards were cracking all night long, along with a cramped bathroom with a problematic shower head. Those we stayed with echoed our comments. I wouldn't be so harsh had the price been reasonable, but claiming it is one of the 'finest' hotels in Southend and charging what they did is a joke. Only good thing was the breakfast. You have been warned.

Got 2 rooms at the Westcliff with 3 mates this past Saturday night. Both rooms were newly renovated, big, clean and had direct views of the water. Hotel manager (Jean) couldn't have been nicer and more accomodating - and the rest of the staff were great as well. Hotel is about a 5 minute walk into the main town and seems to be located in the nicest part of Southend. We missed the breakfast so can't opine on the food.

I stayed at the Westcliff Hotel recently to attend a friends’ nearby wedding. I decided to opt for a 'Luxury room' at special rate of £115 per night instead of £130. The luxury rooms have sea views, 4 poster beds and 'some' benefit from spa baths.

Upon arrival at the hotel the staff were friendly and directed us to our room 204. To reach the room we took the lift which was somewhat compact (about enough room for 2-3 people) with an inner folding metal door. Not recommended for those with claustrophobia.

Anyway we arrived out of the lift into a corridor that reminded me of school trips to residential education centres - lots of tired looking stairs and doors. We passed a laundry cupboard complete with a discarded drinks bottle and dust on top.

Anyway onto the room: The room had a reasonable view out over the sea. However I'd hardly describe the room as luxury.

The bathroom looked like it belonged in low quality student accommodation. The toilet seat had a chip in it and upon lifting the seat it was obvious that it hadn't been cleaned for sometime. The sink was similar with a black build up of mould around the overflow hole. The floor was also decked out with hospital like lino flooring and the radiator and tiles were all splashed and dirty.

The bedroom had a four poster bed which was essentially a creaky dusty frame around a double bed. The curtains were old and ripped, the table surface had bubbled, paint was pealing off the skirting board and one of the wardrobe door hinges was coming off.

Upon trying to watch television I was presented with a fuzzy picture. Changing the channel made no difference. I've seen better quality English television reception in hotels in Holland.

On to breakfast: We arrived at the breakfast room and waited at the entrance for someone to direct us. Being Sunday morning the place was quite busy and after sometime we made our own way in and found a table. The hotel operates a buffet style breakfast with the option of ordering hot drinks and toast from the staff. We made our way to the buffet queue where we found out that the hotel is only able to cook one item at a time. So in order to get a full breakfast you'd need to make around 3 visits: the first one to get beans and hash browns, the second one to get eggs and a third visit to get bacon. Given that the hotel knows how many people are staying overnight we found it surprising that they weren't able to judge just how much breakfast they needed to make..

On to checkout: Upon checkout we pointed out that we were disappointed with the room and the breakfast service. The reception staff were friendly and offered us a £35 discount on the room rate. We accepted this and left, never to return.

Maybe I should add that the hotel was undergoing some renovation works on the first floor. Walking through this floor showed that they appeared to be painting over the existing wallpaper and replacing the carpet. I'm assuming that the room we stayed in had not been refurbished. It's a shame that a hotel doesn't advertise refurbished/non refurbished rooms at different rates to help manage the guests’ expectations.

Stayed here on a business trip and despite the ok appearance the inside was a different kettle of fish . The room was very shabby and the carpets sticky so much so l had to lay the spare towel s down to provide a walk way to the bathroom where you could only have a bath as the shower had seized up . The room was hot and l was unable to open the windows as to had been painted shut and the other would lose its glass if opened . I have to say to say one of the receptionists was pleasant but the other staff seemed as tired as the hotel .

To be honest I wasn't expecting much but at the last minute I had decided to visit sunny southend, where I had gone as a child, and this hotel seemed to have the last available room for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Parking was a little awkard as none allocated for the hotel and you have to find street parking but apart from that the hotel was great. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly, perhaps this is were it wins from the big chains. Our room (209) had obviously been redecorated recently and was spacious and extremley clean. Even with a travel cot we had plenty of room. The bathroom was huge. Breakfast very good quality and as much as you could eat. Nice terrace area to sit in the evening & watch the sun go down over the Isle of Grain. OK not the best view in the world but they can't edit the view.

Being very critical, the lift was v.small but the pram and 2 adults did just fit. Although I can't say they aim for the baby market they made a huge fuss of our toddler and nothing was too much trouble. Paid £92 including full english which I consider reasonable.

If only all of Southend was like this !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Liked — Friendly service, very clean
  • Disliked — Did have several flights of steps so not suitable for disabled
