My husband and I stayed for 1 night during our walk of the Cotswold Way in April. The Royal George was everything we could want at the end of a days walk. We were given a lovely large room with a four poster bed, sitting area and large ensuite bathroom. We enjoyed drinks in the bar before a delicious meal in the dining room.

Service was excellent, check-in was very quick and efficient and the staff in the bar and restaurant very friendly. Carol Jones was particularly helpful as I had emailed her a number of times before our arrival about the booking. We had a great stay.

We booked two rooms for two nights at The George and I have had to give it a 3 rating as I like to be honest when I review places. This is a lovely hotel, the staff were really friendly even when we arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon. The rooms we had were spotlessly clean but unfortunately were a bit tired, the door was missing from one wardrobe and the wallpaper was peeling away from our wall, they could do with a bit if TLC, the walls are thin and in the morning we didn't need to turn our TV on as we could clearly hear the one in the next room, however the beds were huge and very comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night and decided on the roast as it was Sunday, we should have guessed that it wasn't going to be great when the waitress came back to tell us they had run out of a couple of the meats they offer, she also looked knackered and said it had been really busy. The food arrived and was edible but not great, the other food that was coming out looked good so we probably should have ordered something different. Breakfast made up for the evening meal as it was really well cooked and presented, the cooked English breakfast was lovely as was the cold buffet of cereals, pastries etc. The waiting staff were the same as the night before and could have done with the morning off as they were just going through the motions.
To sum up this is a lovely hotel in a great location and the price we paid for two nights with breakfast was excellent so all in all a good experience. I would have given it a four rating if it wasn't for the rooms and the evening meal.

Room Tip: If you want a wardrobe with two doors then beware of room 25.

From the check in to the departure this was a 100 % hotel.
location was chosen by the route we were on so cant comment on the surroundings,
Check-in was quick and professional,
Room was spot on, all you needed with complimentary toiletries.
Breakfast was really good with a really well cooked English.
On arrival back home i realised i had left my electric shaver and toiletries bag in the bathroom, So I rang the hotel and they said they would be happy to send it on but due to it having some medication in it they could not,
I arranged my own courier to collect and they wrapped it up ready to be collected,
I would recommend this place without hesitation, Joe

Could be excellent! The Bad Stuff! It needs a refurb ,the public rooms are in sore need of redocoration also the outside. The restaurant I will review separately as you don't have to eat their except for breakfast. One door missing off the wardrobe? are they trying to emulate Premier Inns no longer have wardrobes just open hanging space.
That apart the room was comfortable clean and the bed huge. Bathroom clean and everything worked. Our room was very quiet despite overlooking the carpark and the rooms above and adjacent being occupied. The staff throughout the stay were friendly, courteous and always helpful. It was unusual to have so many British staff as most Hotels and Restaurants these days are staffed with eastern europeans( this is not a derogatory remark just a statement of fact). We were staying on a cheap weekend break, which was exceptional value for the money. The breakfast is excellent with a frequently replenished buffet section and a "hot menu" with a selection to rival most top notch hotels.
We will definitely stay there again. An added bonus the live music on Friday night was provided by a west-country rocker who played excellent "Dire Straits,Eric Clapton,Chris Rea etc.!

Four of us spent a three night weekend break in the Royal George last weekend. First the bad. The hotel is in desperate need of a major refurbishment. Outside the paintwork is peeling and in many areas covered in green algae as is the outside lighting. Much of the exterior woodwork is rotten with window panes on the verge of falling out. The outside seating area is a disgrace.Filthy with the aforementioned algae, numerous, dog ends and dirty glasses not cleared away. There is a set of rattan style seating. You wouldn't sit on it in overalls. Its been left out all winter and is covered in moss and filth. Quite disgusting and totally unnecessary. An external cleaning regime does not seem to exist and it needs to! Inside there is evidence of water penetration all over the place with many damp patches clearly visible. Wallpaper in our room was lifting and some black mould visible round the windows. In truth had we not pre booked and just arrived "on spec" we would not have booked in and would have looked elsewhere. However we would have been wrong to do so. Finally the good. In spite of my previous comments we were very happy. Although basic our rooms were warm and comfortable. Unlike the outside the interior was clean. The staff were friendly and efficient with the hotel manager not afraid to do a bit of waiting on in the restaurant. This is a chain hotel but the food was excellent. Much better than most of the chain hotels we have experienced. The restaurant area was comfortable although most of the chairs rocked a bit due to loose joints. Breakfast was first class and the evening menu varied, of good quality and very well priced. The wine on the other hand was expensive and we left it alone. Nearly £22.00 for Campo Viejo Reserve a spanish red that can be found for £7 or £8 in UK supermarkets and that costs 3 to 4 euros in Spain is not value for money. However thumbs up for the restaurant. The bar had a good "pub" atmosphere and decent beer. There is entertainment some evenings. The hotel is well located and a good base to explore the area. I would hope refurbishment is high on the agenda. If it is then this place would be really great but they need to get on with it. For now cleaning up the outside is an absolute must and by that it needs doing TODAY!

Room Tip: We had a basic room and although comfortable it was basic. They do superior rooms and if staying mor...
