“Excellent hotel, with luxury touches and friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 December 2013

booked the Tudor Farmhouse Hotel on a gourmet night deal plus an additional nights stay. Although the hotel is an old farmhouse it's centrally located in the village of Clearwell. The main farmhouse itself is where the reception and restaurant are based whilst the rooms are located in a small number of outbuildings. We booked the Loft and I have to say it was prefect. The room was a large suite with an airy feel, well furnished with luxury touches such as a Nespresso machine and fresh milk in the mini fridge (nice touch). The ensuite deserves special mention. Its very large with a roll top bath and a large "walk-in" rain shower behind. This really was luxury and probably the best en suite of any 5* hotel I've stayed in. Breakfast was great with lots of choice and the locally sourced sausages a real treat.
As mentioned earlier we had booked a gourmet stay and booked in for the Tasting Menu. We found the food both excellent and imaginative. I had read reviews that portion size tends to be a little small. It's difficult to comment as we both had a six course tasting menu, which by definition meant the dishes would be on the small size. However we could not finish our meal!
Would definitely recommend both the hotel and the restaurant and we could find no fault in our stay. We will be returning

Room Tip: the suites are worth the little extra charge

Dear gary117
Thanks for taking the time to write your great review.
So glad you had an enjoyable stay in the Loft - that's our favourite bathroom too! The tasting menu is a fairly recent addition, having started it this year, so I'm glad that went well and you enjoyed the range of dishes which are changed regularly to reflect the seasons and whatever if fresh from our kitchen garden.
Looking forward to welcoming you again in the future.
Best wishes
Colin

My partner and I stayed here for a nearby wedding in Clearwell. Perfect location being only a few minutes walk from the castle. Stylish deco and tasty breakfast so I would highly recommend this hotel for a short stay.

Recently stayed at this hotel for a weekend break and found the place to be absolutely fabulous. Our room (room 17) was beautifully furnished. The bed and bedding were the comfiest bed we have ever experienced in a hotel. The bathroom and rainfall shower were fantastic and the towels were the thickest towels I have ever come across. Also loved the small touches in the room such as glass bottled water provided on the bedside table and the dressing gowns in the bathroom.
The service provided in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the food and drink was also delicious.
My only niggly bits is that I felt the TV in the room spoilt the decor and didn't need to be there, although I am one of those who finds it unnecessary to watch television while I'm on holidays. The gravel driveway meant that it was quite noisy and we were woken up in the morning by cars parking. Also, while the food in the restaurant was amazing, it was also quite limited and I found I had the same meal two nights in a row although there is great pub next door which also serves food.
On the whole though, the hotel and service was fantastic. I was actually quite sad to leave and will definitely be back and I recommend it for a romantic weekend away.
I also recommend the cocktails.Especially the British Bulldog one.

We have been about 7 or 8 times to the Tudor farmhouse hotel and have never been disapointed!
We are from the catering trade and know when efforts and attention to detaails are made and it is so nice to get personnal touches from an hotel which is owned by an individual who cares about what they do.
Merci beaucoup Colin & Hari

When we came to book our 2 night stay we were informed that the rooms normally reserved for Secret Escapes were full for our period but the hotel did not hesitate to accommodate us in a higher grade room and we found ourselves lucky enough to be allocated the loft and what a superb suite it was, so the hotelier does go that extra mile to accommodate when they can! When we arrived at the hotel our timing could not have been worse as there was a staff meeting taking place but nonetheless Ruth very kindly extracted herself from the meeting to show us to our room, this was typical of the level of service we experienced throughout our most enjoyable stay. The room was exceptional with a very comfortable bed, large bath and walk through rain shower referred to elsewhere aptly as a car wash as you can literally walk through it. The bathroom alone was the size of an average hotel room with all the usual high quality toileteries, bathrobes and mirrors you would normally see in 4* or 5* establishments with other luxuries such as satellite TV, 2 seater settee, nespresso coffee machine, proper milk, home made biscuits, bottled water replenished daily and a useful sized fridge. In fact we both preferred this suite to the junior suite we stayed in at the Ritz in London so it is more than you would expect in a 3* establishment. The only negative if we were being picky is the carpet is a little rough underfoot but no doubt hard wearing. The room was perfectly quiet being positioned on its own in the garden at the back of the hotel and at night the only sound was the quiet hooting of 2 owls showing that you were definitely staying in a rural location. The weather was wet during part of our visit but we still managed to meet the shetland ponies, sheep, ducks and hens opposite the room's front door! We did not dine at the hotel as we were not staying long and wanted to visit elsewhere however the breakfast and its service was first class with no waiting or scrimping, fresh ingredients, and the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on muffins were superb as was the local cider we tried in the conservatory one evening. The hotel is ideally located to explore the Wye Valley and steeped in history. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a picturesque romantic rural stay, we will be back hopefully in the summer so we can enjoy more of the surrounding countryside!

We stayed for 2 nights at this lovely hotel on the edge of the Forest of Dean. The location is peaceful with beautiful walks in the surrounding area. We stayed in The Lodge which was spacious and tastefully decorated; with views of the gardens to the rear. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I booked this hotel having read a review in the Daily Telegraph magazine and was not disappointed. We were specifically looking for a place to stay so we could enjoy long walks in the surrounding area.
We are looking forward to returning in the near future.
Many thanks.

We stayed at this hotel driving from London to see Billy Joel in Manchester and booked through Secret Escapes. The deal offered was excellent value and i was very impressed with the standard of accomodation. I would recommend Room 23 ( subject to my comment below) and the pwners had thought of everything from lovely dressing gowns to fresh mile in the 'fridge. The bathroom was absolutely outstanding with a super roll top bath and spacious shower. My only slight negative was that there is clearly a room upstairs and the sound-proofing was not great. However after an excellent dinner and a glass of wine this was not really an issue!

Dinner was excellent as was breakfast-the staff were very attentive and the service was of a very high standard.

All in all I think that this hotel is a little gem!

Room Tip: Room 23 is part of a Cottage with another room.Good size with an outstanding bathroom.
