“Lovely break, superior room overpriced :-(”
Reviewed 5 August 2014 via mobile

Had a lovely break here to celebrate s special birthday, hence we booked the superior room 7, I was a bit disappointed as the room seemed rather small and for £170 a night I think was overpriced. Other than your own front door and Jacuzzi facility in the bath we didn't feel there wasn't anything to justify the amount charged. We would stay again but opt for a standard room. The breakfast was very good and so was the evening meal. We visited symonds yat rock and the views were stunning, also Ross on Wye was a great stop off for shopping and restaurants. Overall would give the hotel 4* but would choose a cheaper room next time .

Dear JOJO46
Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us and please accept my apologies for the slow response.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and meals as well as making the most that this beautiful area has to offer.
While our Ciderhouse Rooms are a bit more expensive that the standard rooms we feel that they are quite competitively priced compared with similar rooms elsewhere. I'm sorry you did not feel it represented value for money and am delighted to hear you would consider staying again in another room.
We look forward to welcoming you again soon.
Best wishes
Colin

Fundamentally this is a good hotel with the rooms decorated and kitted out to a high standard. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food good.

However, the room is by no means cheap and so I therefore have an expectation of a good restful nights sleep which I actually didn't completely get:

The mattress was very firm in our room and I woke several times on the first night with aching bones but, after mentioning this to reception in the morning, they put a mattress topper on the bed which sorted the problem out for the second night. They also said that no one had mentioned this before, so perhaps it's just me.

But much more of an issue for us was the noise form the garden tables and chairs in the courtyard garden just outside our room. It's a lovely picturesque garden and the outdoor seating is perfect for aperitifs etc before going into dinner. However, people also used these tables into the late evening and were talking and laughing until 11.30, keeping us awake long after we'd have ideally wanted to be asleep. Perhaps, again, other people might not be as sensitive to this as I am

Anyway, we had a great break in the Forest of Dean and will return to the area again, although probably not to this hotel.

Dear JudyH008
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay and apologies for the time taken to respond.
I'm sorry you found the mattress uncomfortable on the first night. This is very much an area where its difficult to cater for personal preference and this is the only instance that I'm aware of that anyone has found our pocket sprung mattresses uncomfortable. I'm glad to hear this problem was resolved by fitting a mattress topper for the second night.
Apologies also that noise from the garden kept you awake until 11.30pm. We are on the whole lucky to have considerate guests and it is unusual to receive any complaints.
I hope on reflection you might consider returning again. Our newly refurbished rooms in the Farmhouse are beyond earshot of the garden and have been fitted out to the same high standard as the Ciderhouse Rooms with roll top baths and monsoon showers.
Best wishes

Just back from a brilliant short break, was pleased to discover that we had been given a free upgrade to the "Loft Suite". What a great surprise and a beautiful room. Overlooking the garden, with horses, chickens and ducks roaming the fields. Hospitality and the excellent restaurant were superb with great and friendly service.

This is a delightful small hotel in the middle of the village. Rooms in differing styles, sizes and prices are scattered in various buildings, all close to the main building. We were in the main building and the small room had charm and character. The very small bathroom was compensated for by the nice large fluffy white towels. The cottage garden made a lovely place to have a delicious cream tea in and then drinks later. Dinner was good too, one night my duck breast was quite exceptional. The staff throughout were excellent and very helpful.

Lovely little hotel! Stayed for a summer escape in the forest, three nights, two with amazing dinners in the restaurant!
Beautiful garden to sit in the evenings with a local cider or beer. Within easy reach of Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat and all the surrounding area.
Would definitely recommend to those who like a little escape in the Countryside!

The food in the restaurant and service were both excellent.

The staff are first rate from booking to checking out. The food is excellant we ate on two evenings and had the tasting menu with wine on one occasion. My wife is vegetarian and this was no problem for the chef. Breakfast is also of good quality.
There are a range of rooms differing substantially in price. We had the cheapest, a Junior Barn room. The room was clean and well appointed. The bathroom at the point of needing a refit. The rooms only have a dormer ceiling window. The room was too warm at night and the weather wasn't particularly warm so beware if hot.The bed was double not kingsize.
Location is good with easy access to the Forest of Dean
This would be 5 star plus if the room was better.

Room Tip: if choosing a junior barn ask for a dowstairs room

Dear Logistical
Thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay - I so glad you had a good time and found the service and food "first rate".
The room you stayed in in the Junior Barn is due a refurbishment this winter so I hope you will be tempted to return next spring to see the changes we have made.
