“Wedding reception”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

We recently had our daughter and son in law's wedding reception at Whitemead. It was a perfect day for us all. The management and staff were superb before and on the day, their attention to detail could not be faulted and the service they provided can only be described as excellent.

I would highly recommend Whitemead as a wedding venue, having accommodation there meant that friends and family could stay so it made the event a whole weekend. Everyone enjoyed the use of the leisure facilities and the post wedding chill time in the bar was so relaxing.

Special thanks to Mandy, Chris, Sam, the chef, bar and waiting staff, you were stars and made the day everything we could have wished for - and more.

Thank you for your lovely review, we are delighted that your day went as you had hoped.
I know all the staff worked extremely hard to make sure that it would be a day to remember and I am really glad that their hard work paid off.

A word of warning about the swimming pool - for some reason the bottom of this swimming pool feels like rough pebble dash. I unfortuately did a roll in the water and hit my head on the bottom of the pool and gouged my head open quite badly. It hurts your feet just to walk on the bottom of the pool let alone banging your head!! I will not be swimming there ever again!!

Thank you for your review of Whitemead Forest Park. We are sorry to hear that you sustained an injury whilst using the pool and hope that our staff did everything to aid you with your injury.

For safety purposes the swimming pool and surrounding areas are coated in a non slip surface and by its very definition has a rougher textured finish.

I am sorry to hear that you received an injury whilst performing a roll in the water; however this is definitely not something we recommend due to the depth of the pool being only 1.2 metres. This is also the reason why the pool rules prohibit bathers from jumping in, diving in and performing acrobatics and gymnastics whilst in the pool.

We booked in here with our touring caravan, it is easy to find and the pitches were spacious and level.

The facilities are excellent and the shower block was clean and warm. The food on site is Ok but we used the local pubs which are within easy walking distance. The entertainment is very family friendly and the children enjoyed it. The swiming pool was a decent size and I have been to much larger sites with much smaller pools, the sauna and steam room provide a child free haven for 10 minutes.

We used the site as a base to explore the forest on our bikes and there are routes that start on the doorstep. As a family (children 8 & 11) we managed the family trail no problems. This leads to the only negative of the trip, most of the site leave their bikes lying around their pitches as did we, our neighbours awoke one mornign to find the Dad's bike missing from behind their Van. It was probably the most desireable of the bunch in our area, a quick trip to reception revealed 2 others taken that night and a not uncommon problem on the site is revealed by a quick search of on line reviews. I think the sleepy setting leads to a false sense of security so be warned and secure your possesions, it would be nice to get the park to actually prompt people about this to save some of the heartache.

Overall though we were impressed and are planning a return visit.

We went to Whitemead to meet family who live a long way away. It was a good location half way between us. The site had good reviews and checking the website it looked perfect. When we arrived in our deluxe lodge we were surprised at how tatty it was. In the bedroom the furniture was loosing it's top layer peeling away from the wood. The drawers were difficult to slide in and out. You could not open the wardrobe doors as the mattress of the bed was in the way. I had to sit on the bed to open the doors! More like a caravan tightness!! The grill didn't work properly and neither did the oven. One of the floor boards in the kitchen was giving way when you walked on it. The floors generally were creaking. There were burn marks on the hearth beneath the fire. We did not attempt to put it on. We have stayed in several lodges over the years and this has got to be the worst yet! We did enjoy the facilities on offer. The pool was good although the steam room broke down whilst we were there. The Venue offered entertainment every night but this was a little hit and miss! They would advertise that something would be happening between 7.00 and 8.30pm. We turned up one night for something the kids wanted to do at 7.00pm and sat there for an hour before it actually started! Young children struggle when hanging around. When I mentioned all of this to the staff when we were leaving they said that they had been busy and had not had the opportunity to sort out the problems. This was Easter what happened during the winter? All in all we found Whitemead to be very tired and overpriced. They desparately need to sort out their accommodation to continue to charge the prices they do.

Room Tip: There are apartments and these looked good when looking from the outside.

Thank you for your review of Whitemead Forest Park. We are very sorry that Whitemead did not meet your expectations and are looking into these comments further and making a plan to correct these with the relevant Managers.

CSMA are looking to reinvest in Whitemead with plans to look at the whole park and carry out a refurbishment and enhancement plan including areas such as the accommodation, public buildings and the touring site facilities.

I have been to Whitemead 4 years out of the last 5. We are a group of women who meet up every year for a long weekend of activities and fun. The apartments are outstanding with everything you could possibly want. There is always plenty of hot water, the leisure facilities are brilliant, love the pool and the Gym.

When you leave, you will be expected to put the sheets and duvets covers into a supplied plastic bag and empty your bins and use the recycling bins but no more than you would at home really.

The restaurant could do with better staffing, had to wait 10 mins for someone to serve me, only wanted a coffee and when he came out of the kitchen, he totally ignored me and served the person behind me so I walked out but this was a couple of years ago now.

Missed out this year due to health reasons but I am sure I will be back again next year.

There are plenty of spaces for camper vans but I have no idea what the facilities are like for camping.

Our party was five - 2 grandparents, 2 parents and a baby - and we rented a log cabin. The accommodation was superb and greatly exceeded my expectations. There was a large kitchen/living room/dining room which was equipped to a high standard and there was even a dishwasher! The bedrooms were fairly compact (one of them was en suite) but adequate for camp-site type of accommodation. The central heating was more than adequate but could have been bolstered by an electric fire in the hearth although this was not necessary. There was at least ten of everything in cutlery and crockery - which was helpful - and it was a nice touch to leave us a small welcoming pack of coffee, tea, milk etc. There was, however only one parking space and this was inadequate.
Reception was very good, welcoming on arrival and helpful in sorting out a hot water problem. The main action is the central building which houses a (smallish) bar, a swimming pool, a restaurant and a sort of assembly hall where the "entertainment" takes place. I am afraid that I only used the bar facilities. The bar was pleasant as was the service but, in the evening, children running around frantically in what should be an adult environment could be irritating and the management ought to put a time limit (9 pm?) on under age entry. We did visit the adjoining area for the evening entertainment but it was somewhat of a rabble and I would not recommend it unless you have children - preferably budding prima donna girls!
The camp is in the Forest of Dean and is fairly picturesque. The Forest itself is quite nice but the adjoining villages were disappointing and certainly not an advertisement for rural England! However, places like Chepstow, Monmouth and Ross on Wye are well within reach for those who want to escape. And there is a small heritage railway a few hundred yards from the camp site which is well worth spending some time on although it has limited opening days.
I cannot think of any reason to come to a place like this if you don't have children but as such I thought that it was very good and it far exceeded what I had anticipated. I actually enjoyed my stay!
