We went to visit some friends who were staying at the nearby campsite. We don't camp so decided to stay in B&B. Our friends recommended The Fountain, as they have stayed at this campsite and frequented the pub for many years.

We are so glad they did. We arrived in the monsoon conditions but were greeted by such warm and friendly people we didn't care about the weather. The Fountain had a lovely feeling to it, so relaxing and welcoming. The room we stayed in was beautiful, with lovely large windows, overlooking the village. I spent ages just sitting in the window with my book, watching the comical sheep that seem to just wander all over the place.

Michelle showed us up to our room and when we walked in I just felt so comfortable and welcome, such a lovely feeling. I fell in love with the decor, with the floral wallpaper, wonderful colours and designs, I just felt it was so feminine and cosy. The bed was very comfortable and I slept the whole night through, something I don't seem to do often, even at home. The tea and coffee in the room was appreciated, as I love my early morning cuppa.

Breakfast was wonderful, huge and not a problem for me to have vegetarian English Breakfast. The food was hot, with plenty of toast. The service was wonderful, not forced and very natural - like a home from home staying with friends feel to it.

After days of walking and exploring we spent the evenings in the bar with our friends and just talked and talked, Fab beer and wine and totally relaxing atmosphere, it was wonderful. We even went to see a local AmDram, "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night" in the Memorial Hall, which was brilliant.

Michelle told us a bit about the history of The Fountain, its quirks and stories, which was awesome, as I love historical buildings and hearing about their past. We loved it at the Forest of Dean, it is so beautiful and has stolen my heart, to the point that we have bought mountain bikes and plan to return to cycle some of the trails. We walked for miles, lost in the splendour and peace of the forest, to return to see the sheep wandering around, which made us laugh.

Looking forward to our return trip to The Fountain and staying in the beautiful room we stayed in and hopefully many more return trips in the future. Can't wait. Part of me doesn't want to recommend The Fountain because it might mean that we might not be able to get in in the future because it is so popular, but I have to recommend it because it was such a wonderful place, a real gem, leaving us with unforgettable memories - a beautiful and friendly B&B in a beautiful and magical place.

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the one room so can't really comment, maybe just take a chance and let lu...

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to the Fountain, we're glad you had a good time here. My husband has recently reorganised some of the, more historical, artifacts we have on display and written short references about their connection to the village - so if you do return, there's even more to look at now!

Used this place as a meeting point before heading to Whitemead campsite to pitch our tents. Found the place to be warm and friendly and happyly not pretending to be something it isn't. Its a pub a proper one that has a good selection of local ale's and a decent menu of hearty pub type food, with a specials board offering local produce. Like i said we only went to meet up prior to setting up camp, but we liked it so much we were back there for dinner in the evening. The food in the evening was great. Cooked well with decent sized portions, service was spot on to. Hard to fault to be honest. If you want to sit and have a pint or have a spot of lunch in the peace that the Forest of Dean offers. You will get peace too as the entire Forest of Dean seems to be a mobile phone black spot. Which is actually a very liberating feeling.

We were a party of 13 birdwatchers visiting the nearby Nagshead Forest Reserve and lookiing for somehwere convenient for lunch. The Fountain Inn came up trumps in all regards. As we were all seniors we were able to take advantage of the weekday Seniors Lunch offer and were accommodated in the cosy restaurant. We were able to make an advance choice from the menu resulting in our meals being available soon after we arrived; indeed, we just had time to order and be served with our drinks. The food is well presented and tasty with the portions just right for a lunchtime meal. The service was friendly, engaging and efficient. What more could you ask for such an occasion?

The Fountain is a homely place; more village pub than hotel, but the bedrooms and en-suite facilities are entirely adequate. The decor would not feature in Ideal Home magazine - there are enough flowers on the wallpaper to give you hay-fever, but the rooms are clean, there are facilities for making hot drinks, plenty of towels, and a television. The telephone in the room is more cosmetic than functional - you cannot make outside calls and there is no mobile reception. There's nowhere like the Forest of Dean for a sense of isolation! The food is unashamedly pub-grub, but good grub, and there are a few more curries on offer than usual. Besides which there are special deals, like two mains for £10 or a free glass of wine or a bottle of beer on other evenings. Judging from the number of folk eating there, the pub must have a good local reputation. Breakfasts were good - freshly made and efficiently served. A choice of 'starters' between tinned prunes or tinned grapefruit could be improved upon, but there is plenty of toast and an endless supply of coffee or tea. Any combination of ingredients from the 'full English breakfast' (including vegetarian options) can be ordered, but that's it. Enough choice for all but the most fastidious eaters. All in all, this is a very good unpretentious place to dine or stay and gives excellent value.

Stayed at the 'Fountain' over the last weekend in February 2012 with our two Collies Gem and Skye. We found the Inn up to its usual excellent standard and despite being busy the welcome was warm, the cider good and the food fine both in quality and price.

We stayed in the Inn and the room had recently been refurbished, it was a good size, light and airey, had a four poster bed and a large bathroom with both shower and a bath. Despite the time of year the accomodation was well heated and very cosy. The Resturant menu is comprehensive with the emphasis on traditional fare and some great curries, as well as excellent roasts on Sunday lunchtime.

The Inn is well located for visiting the Forest attractions and towns such as Lydney and Cinderford and the Dean Forest Steam Railway, which is within walking distance. Michelle and staff are friendly and give the pub a great atmoshere. Thank you for a great weekend can't wait to stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Inn are good and they also have two rooms whch are outside and easily acessed by the le...

Just been there to eat on a few occasions when in the Forest. Either quaint or old fashioned depending upon your point of view. Food is hearty and well priced ( especially on two for a tenner Mondays and Thursdays). Very few places worth eating out around the area and this offers good value family eating.
