“Fountain in the Forest”
Reviewed 10 October 2012

The Fountain Inn. Its location is great to explore the surrounding Forest of Dean, arrived lunchtime Sunday couldn't get in the door this was at 12.05 it had only been opened 5 minutes, they were all here for the "Sunday Carvery" which made it seem it was the thing to eat on Sunday Lunch. We only had a bagette but these were fantastic, well filled with salad, doritos and coleslaw,
we got there at this time to do the Steam Train ride to Lydney whioch we left to do. We booked in when we returned about 4.00 it was a little quieter, we had room 4 nice clean large room with a bath in the bathroom, with big windows you could sit in to watch the world go by as well as the wandering sheep. In the morning what a great breakfast they would get anything you asked, the bacon was brilliant, loads of toast, tea, coffee, fruit etc. The staff were always happy to help with directions, places to go, things to see but what a joy just to sit and listen to the locals chat about the goings on that day. Will be returning soon.

Room Tip: We wanted a quiet room away from kitchen or cooler motors going all night, it overlooked the road bu...

Myself and my partner recently had the pleasure of spending a few nights at The Fountain Inn. Its location is great to explore the surrounding Forest of Dean and we really had a fantasic time! The staff couldn't do enough to help, every day was service with a friendly smile, they took time to suggest local attractions to visit and they also have a range of visitor information. The pub itself is cosy, in an 'olde worlde' style with lots of interesting artifacts (with a history attached to most of these!). It certainly seemed popular with locals and visitors alike and has a really relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The bedrooms were clean and bright and the food was excellent: a hearty and well cooked breakfast to start your day and later a choice of proper pub grub and so much more besides. If you're after a few days in a fab location, great atmosphere and tempting food, then I'd defintately recommend visiting.

Found this pub on a yell.com search and we went as it had good reviews for all the family and cycling. It is within 5 mins of beechenhurst lodge and excellent food. Really friendly and accommodating with a 6 yr old and 8 month old baby. They provided kids cutlery and high chair. The only thing I couldn't find was a baby changing facility but I didn't ask! There wasn't one in the ladies loos but the weather was nice and loads of outdoor space! Would definitely go back.

We went to visit some friends who were staying at the nearby campsite. We don't camp so decided to stay in B&B. Our friends recommended The Fountain, as they have stayed at this campsite and frequented the pub for many years.

We are so glad they did. We arrived in the monsoon conditions but were greeted by such warm and friendly people we didn't care about the weather. The Fountain had a lovely feeling to it, so relaxing and welcoming. The room we stayed in was beautiful, with lovely large windows, overlooking the village. I spent ages just sitting in the window with my book, watching the comical sheep that seem to just wander all over the place.

Michelle showed us up to our room and when we walked in I just felt so comfortable and welcome, such a lovely feeling. I fell in love with the decor, with the floral wallpaper, wonderful colours and designs, I just felt it was so feminine and cosy. The bed was very comfortable and I slept the whole night through, something I don't seem to do often, even at home. The tea and coffee in the room was appreciated, as I love my early morning cuppa.

Breakfast was wonderful, huge and not a problem for me to have vegetarian English Breakfast. The food was hot, with plenty of toast. The service was wonderful, not forced and very natural - like a home from home staying with friends feel to it.

After days of walking and exploring we spent the evenings in the bar with our friends and just talked and talked, Fab beer and wine and totally relaxing atmosphere, it was wonderful. We even went to see a local AmDram, "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night" in the Memorial Hall, which was brilliant.

Michelle told us a bit about the history of The Fountain, its quirks and stories, which was awesome, as I love historical buildings and hearing about their past. We loved it at the Forest of Dean, it is so beautiful and has stolen my heart, to the point that we have bought mountain bikes and plan to return to cycle some of the trails. We walked for miles, lost in the splendour and peace of the forest, to return to see the sheep wandering around, which made us laugh.

Looking forward to our return trip to The Fountain and staying in the beautiful room we stayed in and hopefully many more return trips in the future. Can't wait. Part of me doesn't want to recommend The Fountain because it might mean that we might not be able to get in in the future because it is so popular, but I have to recommend it because it was such a wonderful place, a real gem, leaving us with unforgettable memories - a beautiful and friendly B&B in a beautiful and magical place.

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the one room so can't really comment, maybe just take a chance and let lu...

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to the Fountain, we're glad you had a good time here. My husband has recently reorganised some of the, more historical, artifacts we have on display and written short references about their connection to the village - so if you do return, there's even more to look at now!

Used this place as a meeting point before heading to Whitemead campsite to pitch our tents. Found the place to be warm and friendly and happyly not pretending to be something it isn't. Its a pub a proper one that has a good selection of local ale's and a decent menu of hearty pub type food, with a specials board offering local produce. Like i said we only went to meet up prior to setting up camp, but we liked it so much we were back there for dinner in the evening. The food in the evening was great. Cooked well with decent sized portions, service was spot on to. Hard to fault to be honest. If you want to sit and have a pint or have a spot of lunch in the peace that the Forest of Dean offers. You will get peace too as the entire Forest of Dean seems to be a mobile phone black spot. Which is actually a very liberating feeling.

We were a party of 13 birdwatchers visiting the nearby Nagshead Forest Reserve and lookiing for somehwere convenient for lunch. The Fountain Inn came up trumps in all regards. As we were all seniors we were able to take advantage of the weekday Seniors Lunch offer and were accommodated in the cosy restaurant. We were able to make an advance choice from the menu resulting in our meals being available soon after we arrived; indeed, we just had time to order and be served with our drinks. The food is well presented and tasty with the portions just right for a lunchtime meal. The service was friendly, engaging and efficient. What more could you ask for such an occasion?

Room Tip: If you are planning to visit this area of the Forest of Dean as a party and wish to take in an excel...
