“Value for money.”

We wanted a base in the Thornbury area for an overnight stop, after searching the various options we decided on the Golf Lodge. It is obviously a conversion from a farmhouse, but we found that it looked welcoming from the front view. It is in a quiet area and the rooms are a bit dated. Breakfast was good and the service was also good. All in all for what we payed it was good, and we would certainly use it again.

Having booked last minute with booking.com to stay for two nights so we had a close base for seeing family, we thought we may get a better quality of accommodation than a chain hotel - how wrong we were! The golf club reception didn't have our booking so we had to stand whilst this was sorted. Having booked a double bedroom - clearly stated on our booking - we were allocated a twin. This was sorted and a comment made about eye sight! The room on first looks was tired and in desparate need of an update. Having sat on the bed after a 5 hour journey - the springs certainly don't allow for a comfy nights sleep! The lino in the bathroom is coming up, there are nasty stains on the bathroom ceiling, hairs in the bath and a mouse trap hidden behind the loo! I will say that the sheets and towels were clean.
Going for breakfast on the first morning, whether they weren't expecing us but the table was set for one - the lady serving was polite and breakfast was ok but the burnt sausage is one to be missed!
On our second morning there was a powercut which I know they cannot help but this also meant no water for anything. The loud gurgles from 5am in the morning certainly didn't aid sleep! There was no offer of even a bottle of water for teeth brushing.
Whilst trying to check out, we understood that they would have to take card payment once the power had returned so thought before we left we would at least have something for breakfast. My husband had to ask what would be available and the man I can only assume to be a Manager asked 'What would you like?' in a rather sarcastic way. Having been told we could have a soft drink or beer, we declined. What really surprised us though is that they had managed to make a mug of tea for the lady sat trying to sort payments out which was clearly on view but could not offer this for the paying guests!
There was no one willing to take control of the situation or any of the problems they seem to have. We did have a lovely breakfast in the town centre - what a shame they don't have rooms!
We certainly wont be returning to stay there and would not recommend it.

It would be wrong to even classify this place as a hotel because the facilities which were available this week fall short of even a homeless hostel! Arrived on Wednesday evening by taxi to find the entire place locked up and no staff present. Eventually a welcome 'note' was discovered pinned to the door with the key, no explanation or apology. It was like the opening scene to an amateur horror movie and being a woman on her own it was very disturbing. Having found my room, there was no outside line available, this had to be enabled by the 'ghost' staff. Now I was stuck with no car and without a mobile phone (yes, some people do not have mobile phones!!), no way of contacting the outside world to rescue me from this horror hotel. Of course the public telephone at the hotel would work - but no, every number called gave the same message 'This call cannot be connected.' So, trapped in a hotel with no staff, no food, no drink, no telephone, no car, oh, and being five months pregnant with no way of telling my husband I was okay.
I will be complaining to the hotel group and demanding a full refund because this place was a shambles. Even the next day no staff were on site, so there was not even anyone to complain to then. The hotel management will probably blame the bad weather, but if I could get there then so could they and if they were not able to host me then they should have contacted me so I could make alternative arrangements.
Pathetic.
