“A shadow of its former self”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

I knew the Compass well many years ago, visiting often for company seminars that were held here. My parents also discovered it on a trip from London and recommended it to me, not knowing that I already knew it.

On this visit, for food and drink only, the present setup seems a poor shadow of what it used to be. Our food was greatly overpriced for the medium sized portion that arrived, not over hot and of very standard quality with a tired-looking, undressed salad accompanyment. This inn is so well positioned close to junction 18 of the M4 that it ought to be packed out and doing well. On this Friday evening there were very few customers, very few staff in evidence and the whole place had an air of "could be so much better". A shame, I hope it recovers some of the quality it once had.

We visited for food only, early in the evening. The hotel is woefully understaffed, one waiter serving, taking payments and running the whole show. It meant that two hours in we had only had a main course. It took so long to pay that we wandered in to the bar to settle the bill. Food was very average, nothing to write home about and a disappointing evening all round. Dark restaurant and hard to see what we were eating, which was probably just as well!

The Compass Inn is a bit tired, basically everything is there but it all seems to be well used and you can see its heritage as a pub with rooms. Yes its been added too and has a lot more facilities. The rooms had quite a bit of noise from next door and above but luckily I had quiet neighbours if you are unlucky expect a problem. The people working there all seem helpful and friendly. Make sure you ask for a WiFi code at reception!! They say its free and you expect to connect - which you do; but what they don't tell you is there is no internet connection without paying or getting the code (which is typed on a small piece of paper withdrawn from a Tupperware bowl - you will need 2 if you have smartphone and computer) I think that tells you how it works here, very 60's. Breakfast dried out and sitting on the heat. Ask them to cook you something and its quite good. The area is near to the M4 so convenient; but for me I won't be rushing back.
I think the rack rate for this hotel is far too high so make sure you get a discount.

Room Tip: There is an additional car park around the back. Rooms close to the road - the hotel is next to the...

We decided to take a leisurely weekend break prior to Christmas to recharge our batteries as we had been so busy. It was just what the doctor ordered. Our room was quite and the bed very comfortable. The food was good. The staff friendly. Would not hesitate to return.

Stayed here for 1 night as we were visiting for the Christmas market.
Clean and comfortable room with good facilities.
Couldn't use the WIFI but didnt report the problem to staff.
Car park could do with improved lighting around the back.
On the whole a great place to stay on a budget

To be honest the place is in need of a bit of a lift. We had 3 rooms, 2 were ok, but 1 definitely needed updating. As did some of the decor around the rest of the hotel.
Dinner was average too, but very pleasant staff who were nice and helpful.
Breakfast was a disappointment, help your self to the cooked breakfast, which even arriving to at 8.30am was all a little dried out and sorry for itself after sitting under heat lamps for too long! We have stayed at best westerns before, and breakfast has always been very good.
Don't think we will stay again.
