This wonderful old castle dates back to the 11th century and after hundreds of years of intriguing history is still lived in by the Berkeley family. A free tour given by experienced guides adds another dimension that you would not get by simply wandering around on your own. Considering the age of the castle it is in an amazing state of repair, obviously loved and well looked after, the gardens are also a lovely place to wander with the whole thing being set in beautiful countryside. A visit not to be missed if you are in the area.

In glorious autumn sunshine, Berkeley is a magnetic draw. Black Knight Historical once again provided the half term magic and wizardry, particularly effective in the beer cellar, transformed for the purpose to resemble a Hogwarts style academy. This is no gimmick: these guys really know their stuff, skillfully combining the educational elements within the entertainment. Hats off to all the staff who go to the greatest lengths in transforming the whole Castle for the duration. We did witness a genuinely unsavoury encounter: having gained unauthorized entry, three late arrivals resorted to a tirade of abuse when invited to leave by (we presumed) a family member walking her dogs; she was clearly shaken by their unnecessarily thuggish behaviour.

What an interesting history this castle has. Great for adults and with a jester trail for juniors. We were lucky enough to have a passionate and knowledgeable guide whose enthusiasm was infectious. I normally can’t retain all the info but the story telling was so good I have retold some of her stories to our friends and family, would highly recommend a visit here. Guided tours were on the hour. Visit the on site cafe. Good value.

Took a trip to Berkeley Castle during the half term week. On our arrival a spooky Halloween theme was advertised, which didn't disappoint. There was lots for the kids to see and do, with witches and wizards wandering through the castle, story telling and pumpkin carving as well as a trail through the grounds. The staff had obviously put a lot of effort into making it something special and my son loved it. For the adults the grounds were bathed in Autumn sunshine which made for a lovely walk. The Yurt Tea Room sells a range of snacks the usual hot and cold drinks all of which were reasonably priced. We had a really nice day and the staff were very polite and welcoming. The Halloween theming ensured the kids were entertained so well worth the admission fee.

I'd been wanting to visit for a number of years, so running the Stroud half marathon was just what I needed. The castle is fantastic, a wonderful attraction for all ages. It's been in the same family for centuries, and is still a private home, but there's plenty to see.
The big attraction is the murder of King Edward II there in 1327. Legend has it he met his end with a red hot poker inserted in his rectum, but in all probability he was smothered.
It's worth taking a guided tour, for they highlight some wonderful things and it's included in the price.
