Reviewed 24 February 2014 via mobile

We booked an executive room on 16th floor which was attractively decorated with a usefully positioned desk. The bed was OK- quite firm but that's what we prefer. The pillows were pretty awful and we were relieved that we brought our own. The breakfast buffet wasn't brilliant but there were a few things which we could have ordered freshly cooked - like porridge - and that might have been better. Staff were friendly and helpful. We'll go elsewhere when we next visit Manchester.

Our stay was ruined by Holiday Inn's awful pre-authorisation payment policy. This meant we had to pay an extra £50 on top for any 'extras'. We said we didn't want to pay this and they refused to check us in stating it was 'our policy'. The money then takes over 2 working days to go back into your account! Some people don't have that kind of money to just go missing for that amount of time. This is a terrible policy and upon asking the receptionist why the company insist on this, she just repeatedly said "it's just our policy"! That's not annoying at all is it? A receptionist that can't explain why Holiday Inn remove money from your account for NO reason. We are disgusted with this hotel and it's non-informed staff. The previous night we stayed in a 4-star Hilton Double Tree for the same price and amazingly they don't have this awful pre-authorisation payment policy. Do they feel the need to remove £50 from your account over 2 working days and a weekend!? No they don't. People reading this, I recommend you stay anywhere other than a Holiday Inn. If Holiday Inn is reading this, please don't tell me 'it's our policy'. I've heard this repeatedly from your reception staff and it is infuriating. It is a BAD policy and it literally put us off using any of your facilities and spending any more money in your hotels. We would not have used any 'extras' and you should give the customer the option like other hotels, not deny them check-in until they do. Disgusting.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Reference: Holiday Inn Manchester-MediaCityUK

I refer to your complaint which has been forwarded to me for attention. Your complaint has been carefully investigated and I thank you for offering me the opportunity to explain credit card authorisation within the hotel.

Credit cards are increasingly used in fraudulent circumstances, hence hotels such as the Holiday Inn Manchester-MediaCityUK must be vigilant, no credit card details are held on the hotel premises therefore please note that your credit card will be pre-authorised on your arrival.
Within this hotel it is standard practice to do pre-authorisation ensuring the safety of all guests credit cards upon check in to our properties.

I do apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused you however as a matter of safety and security for all our guests we will continue to ask for credit card authorisation for all guests who check in to our properties.

When reserving hotel accommodation the details on the booking does advise that a valid credit card must be presented on arrival and pre-authorisation will occur.

All of our staff are subject to disciplinary action including dismissal if they are found to have unlawfully discriminated against any guest.

In the absence of any further information I cannot reach any conclusion other than the hotel staff have acted courteously and professionally in their dealings with you. They followed normal procedures that apply to all staff.

I hope that this will not dissuade you from staying with us in the future.

With Kind Regards

Teresa

I had the pleasure of staying at the Holiday Inn Media CityUK recently with my dog. The hotel staff were all extremely welcoming and the hotel was splendid. Rini was a ray of sunshine - a real asset to your team. I was made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. One thing I noticed in the hotel was that you could not hear the doors slamming shut once you were inside your room - which is something I did notice whilst staying in another hotel recently. I would not hesitate to recommend the Holiday Inn - I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you - thank you.

Room Tip: If unsure - ask how to regulate the room temperature to ensure a good nights sleep - it is unlikely...

No stranger to this hotel, a frequent visitor. Where else are you going to stay? This HI has a monopoly.

It's fine, nothing great. Not reviewed after each visit as not much changes.

The welcome is as you'd expect, your room is as the photo depicts. There is something a little soulless about the place, not even a shrink wrapped biscuit to have with your cup of in room tea.

Two things that need sorting out, that have been mentioned directly and written about over the past two years; please stop serving the cheapest OJ at breakfast, change up to OJ which tastes of OJ. Expect too the worst breakfast coffee you've ever endured.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Many Thanks for your feedback.
Glad you are staying with us and not the competition, as there are a choice of hotels in this area - therefore Thank You for choosing to stay with us.
I will pass your comments onto Krogab who are our juice and coffee supplier, and see if they can supplier a wider choice of beverages.
I hear on the grapevine that we may be introducing Starbucks coffee, for which I am sure will be a relief to all coffee drinkers out there.

Have a good weekend, especially as it's Valentine's Day today.

With Kind Regards

Hotel was superb...clean, comfortable, welcoming....only downside was the tram outside wasn't working due to maintenance but as this wasn't thd hotel's fault it's still worth the 5 stars. It did have a weirdly small bath though, but shower was ace so we didn't care. Bathroom had LED mood lighting which was different but rather cool...bed was really comfy and room was well sound insulated...had a great night's sleep...thanks...

We got a good deal on this modern and comfortable hotel for a Saturday night stay after visiting the nearby Imperial War Museum. It's a fair way out of the city centre but the public transport links are quick and easy with a tram stop almost on the doorstep.

Rooms are spacious with a choice of pillows and an unrivalled view over Manchester and the Pennines. Staff are friendly and Booths supermarket next door is perfectly situated for snacks and drinks rather than raiding the minibar!

The hotel is fine and does what is needed but the fact it is in the middle of Media Quay means it is really only worth going there if you are on business or going on the telly.
I was told it gets a bit lively the night before they film Jeremy Kyle for obvious reasons.
