“Pub, not restaurant.”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

This is a gem of a pub. It seems that a year doesn't pass without it winning awards for the selection and quality of its traditional ales, on top of which there is a bewildering array of Belgian and German beer in bottles and on tap. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and at lunchtime they serve basic but perfectly good food. If the kitchen isn't open, you're welcome to bring food in from the very good deli next door.

I think the best thing about this pub though is the people. It is a community pub first and foremost, but not in a way that is intimidating or unwelcoming for first time visitors. The pub's locals are representative of the community it serves. People of all trades and professions (and none) drink here, students, pensioners, foreign workers, you name it. The pink pound is more than welcome here too.

Tim and Paulette are the owners, and fine and generous hosts they are. They are quite rightly proud of what they have achieved in the 5 or 6 years since they came over from Ireland, and they are always willing to talk enthusiastically to anybody about their excellent pub and its excellent beer.

It's only fair that I declare my interest. This is the pub I've chosen to make my local for the past 5 years.

“Nice selection of beers”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

One of many pubs located on the Salford Ale Trail. Situated just off Chapel Street, in Bexley Square
.
Visited a few times, mainly for its impressive range of Belgian beers. Around 30-40 bottles are listed on a huge blackboard. More are available on tap. A good rotating range of real ales and ciders also feature

Despite its Salford address it is situated close enough to Manchester city centre to walk. Just over a five minute brisk walk from Salford central train station.

“The New Oxford, Salford”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

A great little real ale pub in a quaint little square near Salford Cathedral and next to the old Magistrates Court in Salford. Tim and Paulette are excellent hosts in this warm, welcoming, public house. The food is home cooked and and good value. There were nine real ales available when eighteen of us descended on the pub for the afternoon in October 2013. All of the ales were in tip top condition. My tea total friends enjoyed the coffee and the tea. Only a short walk from Manchester City Centre crossing the River Irwell on Bridge Street. Try the pub out. You will be pleased you did.
