We recently stayed at St Mary’s Hall for two nights. Our original intention was to visit Jane Austen’s house in nearby Chawton, and St Mary’s was the perfect base for doing so.

One of the two proprietors, Joan, met us when we arrived. A cup of tea and a welcoming chat were both much appreciated after a very long drive and Joan was able to recommend lots of nearby attractions and places to eat in the meantime. We were given the ‘Tower Room’; a beautifully decorated and quirky suite which is indeed situated at the top of a small tower. The room was comfortably furnished and the recently refitted shower room was lovely and clean. Equally impressive was the breakfast each morning; we would thoroughly recommend the full English!

We were able to park our car at St Mary’s Hall. As Chawton was only a short (and scenic) walk away, we didn’t need to drive at all during our visit.

Although I have never stayed in a B&B before, my partner has stayed in many and said that he considers St Mary’s Hall to be far and above the best of these. We would recommend St Mary’s Hall both as a base for exploring nearby Chawton, or simply for a relaxing break away. We will be returning!

From the moment we got out of the car we felt like we were visiting with old friends! Joan took us in and got us some tea which was much appreciated after our drive and full day of sight-seeing. I have a peanut allergy and she was fantastic about making breakfast for me that was safe. It was so well made we really enjoyed it and everything tasted so good because it was fresh and local. She had also made some rhubarb jam the previous day which she offered us for breakfast and it was delicious. We stayed in the tower room and seeing as we had been staying in so many different hotesl in UK the room felt huge. The bathroom was beautiful as well and I loved the heated towel rack! We were in the area visiting Jane Austen house and this was a great location. We followed the Jane Austen trail and walked all through Chawton and from the B&B we could walk all through Alton as well and visit all the places that would have been familiar to Jane Austen. I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone who will be staying in this area. I am sure we will return one day! Thank you Joan and Jack :)

As one of the business types that stays in hotels on average 3-4 times a week, I thought I'd try out St Mary's Hall after a disappointing stay at one of the hotels in Alton on a previous visit and I can't emphasise enough what a jewel I've found. From the moment you arrive, the proprietors, Joan and Jack, couldn't be more friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very clean and comfortable - and the breakfasts are superb! If you ever need somewhere to stay in the Alton area, forget the faceless corporate establishments for a night and treat yourself to St Mary's Hall.

Joan and Jack provided the warmest of welcomes and we couldn't have been happier with the accommodation - a charming exterior in a quiet street, while inside all is luxurious and spotless with everything you can think of for comfort and convenience. We stayed in the Garden Suite, walked to the nearby French Horn pub for dinner and enjoyed a great night's sleep. Next morning Joan served us a delicious breakfast while Jack helped us plan our day's activities.

Room Tip: Jane Austen's house in Chawton.
