I arrived to see the car park full of van's, this is my worst nightmare I thought!!!! but it turned out to be an OK stay. Yes the hotel looks a little tired and "no" I would not spend £95 on room in this hotel as previously stated..... I payed £59 and this was about right.
The staff are friendly and the breakfast nice,
They need to address the problem of free Wifi, in this day and age it should be free in the whole of the hotel, the TV reception was very poor too.

I can not believe that anyone has anything nice to say about this hotel. We paid £95 and if we were not attending a wedding would have gone home. The place was dirty, tired and unkempt. We went in through the entrance at the back which was covered in cigarette butts and weeds and needed a good sweep .The staircase was tired and needed painting and cleaning. The carpets need hoovering and cleaning. The entire hotel need a refurb. Our room was like a furnace no air conditioning not even a fan and the windows had a lock so had to prop them open with magazines.A sticky night so really hard to sleep also as wedding going on downstairs very noisy and people smoking outside our window smoke came in!
After a hot sticky night with a dripping tap. We went down for breakfast a hotplate of food greeted us.Dried up food and as for the scrambled eggs! Neither myself or my husband could work out what they were made from. I have stayed in many places around the world and this is probably the poorest value for money. I have stayed in YMCA hostels cleaner than this.

We only stayed here for two nights for work and as we didn't book the room we were surprised to be staying in the Cardinal Suite (I think this is the bridal sweet)!

The room was clean, cosy and nothing was wrong at all, the bed was large and the Tv worked fine! The bathroom was large and clean, the only negative thing I could say is that the taps were a bit stiff and akward but that's only because I'm nit-picking.

Breakfast was alright, had full english, a few cereal options, juices, yoghurts and fruit to choose from in a buffet so it was fine - the scrambled eggs were soggy and powdery so I'd avoid those, but it was substantial so nothing wrong with it!

The staff were not that friendly at any point and they were a bit blunt whenever we asked them anything, and at breakfast they seemed a bit grumpy and unapproachable

All in all a fine stay, reasonable price and exactly what we needed. Despite few niggly problems I'd 100% stay here again.

Having enjoyed the night as part of a wedding party celebrating at the Alton House Hotel, we were overly confident in the good food, service and general initiative of the staff when returning in the morning for breakfast. Though the evening was very well executed and a very enjoyable meal with polite and efficient staff, the morning had a few surprises!

Breakfast is as one would expect a hot plate service with tea and toast brought to you. Being part of the wedding party we simply wanted to enjoy a cup of tea and watch the news on television by the window in the sun before the rest of the family came down. This was clearly not an easy thing for the breakfast staff to cater to and we were very plainly told that we had to sit at an allocated table to drink our morning tea. We looked around at an almost empty breakfast room, a vacant sofa and then back to a clearly unamused and impatient waiter. He made no effort to cater for our very simple request and marched us like naughty school children to his table of choice. There was no hint at a smile, a "good morning", any pleasantries of any sort. He looked visibly annoyed at our presence and made us feel most unwelcome. He sulked off to get our tea and we had to shake our heads in disbelief and decided that actually, he should have just said 'yes, no problem' and we sat where, as paying guests, we wanted. We were clearly not disrupting any seating plan as it was about 8 am and we WERE the party hiring the hotel!

So after our 'waiter' came and lovingly banged and rattled a pot of tea and cups down in our seat of choice, looking very VERY unhappy about our breaking the breakfast room rules we let stew and drank our tea. I'm not sure of the training of the breakfast staff at this hotel but a large pot of tea for two with one teabag floating does not make tea. It makes brown water. Having paid £7 each for breakfast and being treated so rudely, all we wanted was a cup of tea in peace and even this could not be delivered. So we asked kindly for another teabag to make the tea stronger. When the tea pot returned with 4 bags in it, we were now faced with a strong, black tea, equally as undrinkable. Who knew a pot of tea would be so hard to get right?

Despite having our cups and glasses removed from the table when we did sit down in what seemed like a form of service industry punishment, having to seek out and ask for toast (of course it did not come without a fight) and ask for some ketchup and brown sauce to be put out, all was fine. Once we began eating from the hot plate where we were not dependant on the staff, all was fine. The breakfast was very nice, no complaints about the food. But the staff need some serious training / replacing!

I have worked for years in the hotel industry and would never dream of acting like this fellow, and feel sorry for whoever is at his table next!

Room Tip: Go elsewhere for breakfast!

We had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Alton House on 13th July 2014; not only was the function area an ideal layout, but the fact it opened out onto the beautiful garden at the back for our exclusive use made it a wonderful venue all round. All our guests said they had a fantastic time thanks to the delicious, good quality 3-course meal and evening buffet, caring and efficient service by the staff and clean, comfortable bedrooms. We felt like we were in good hands and couldn't have asked for more, thank you to everyone and Sarah in particular, for looking after us so well and making our wedding the special day it was!
