“Top notch”
Reviewed 23 June 2014 via mobile

Myself and a few friends were out on a bike ride and thought we'd try this place out for some lunch. From the outside the place does look a bit worn down however the food and service was amazing! Massive portions and so well presented too! Very good value for your money. Definitely head there again

“Excellent”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

It has been several years since we have been to the Jack Russell but they are doing a brilliant job with the new owners. We have been a couple of times since and the food has been very tasty and is very good value for money. In fact we are going to go back again this weekend!

“Fantastic”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

Just returned from our local. First time visiting in 9 months since it changed from the last owners. Didn't really know what to expect and went with no expectations. Callam and ollie are doing a great job. I hope the pub gets the promised makeover from the owners that they deserve and then they will be able to move on and keep their business growing. Lovely ales, great hospitality and the food was absolutely superb...we will be back for sure.

“They need a (new) chef”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

We stumbled across the Jack Russell because we were diverted due to a road closure. Seemed very nice at first, but things steadily went down hill.

The first clue was when they didn't have any crisps (an English country pub without crisps?!)

Their bitter was/is excellent. Can't remember the name.

We both had roast pork. Crackling was good; the meat OK, but a bit dry and a bit tough. Mash, cabbage and green beans were OK: nothing to write home about.

The two young waitresses were pleasant enough, but didn't seem massively efficient: there seemed to be an awful lot of walking backwards and forwards without anything much happening. And our meal seemed to take too long to appear, given that, when we ordered, there were only six diners, including us.

It was when we ordered dessert that things really descended into farce. We waited and waited and waited. We asked what was going on, and the waitress said, "we're waiting on food". We sat non-plussed. Eventually my wife asked again, and when we got the same answer she lost it, and we stomped out. Whilst my wife was paying, I looked round the restaurant. There were 28 diners, and not one of them had ANY food in front of them. Bless their patient English hearts. As a nation, we really must get better at complaining when we get poor service.

The publican did knock off the price of the dessert we never had, and also the drinks. And he offered us a voucher, but the Jack Russell is too far from home for us to risk that they still won't have professional staff.

And what is this thing of not having sweeteners for tea and coffee? Do you never have diabetics or people on a diet?

“The Jack is back, and better than before!”
Reviewed 25 March 2014 via mobile

Stayed over at the JR for the first time since it reopened. Ollie and Callam are doing a great job, the room was clean and warm. The food was fantastic value and the quality of the locally sourced food exceptional. The beer was well kept and they manage to created a really warm friendly atmosphere. Oh and the breakfast, Wow! Don't plan on eating lunch. We'll be back, soon...
