I stayed in the Lysses while on a three month course from the end of September through to mid December of 2008.
The hotel is not large, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I found the rooms fairly small for double rooms and the desks were a bit small for the academic work I was trying to do in the evening. The rooms I had throughout the three months all had flat screen televisions with freview, excellent. Pity the wall brackets weren't up to the tv's, I had one fall off the wall as I was working and I wasn't the only one. I believe they had had a bad batch of wall brackets so all should be sorted now. The beds were hard, on the small side and I didn't like the fight with the sheets and blankets at night, the beds are made up so tightly that I had to fight my way in, what's wrong with duvets? However, to put this in perspective, at home I have a waterbed so I find most beds hard, so maybe they are ok.
It was good to have room service as a no-cost option, more so because in the run up to christmas the restaurant was often in use for functions, or just busy.
I found the cooked breakfasts good, but not stunning. The restaurant (Richmond Restaurant) is excellent, but not the sort of food I would want to eat often. The bar had no real ale but the hotel is close to the centre of Fareham were there are restaurants and pubs galore.
The carpark is interesting, accessed through a small tunnel, it suffers from being under several large trees, so your car gets covered in bits of tree and stuff from things living in the trees. As the hotel has several function rooms and seems to have a lot of events through the day the carpark was often full when I got back in the evening, but I always managed to squeeze in somewhere.

A lovely building in a high street location that could do with some money spent on it. The fabric of the building is in desperate need of attention, I tried to find evidence of investment beyond nice new t.v s but was stumped. The front door looks like a gang of rottweillers have been trying to claw their way in, the carpets look like something that should have been changed twenty years ago, the room I used had peeling wallpaper and damp stains.

Beds, absolutely terrible - the divan looked like a refugee from the sixties and the mattress felt like it was filled with spuds - and as for the scratchy blankets !!! Someone ought to let the owners know about duvets.

Which is a shame because the staff are friendly and efficient and they do a first class job of cleaning the place.

I stayed at this quiet hotel with some old friends over a weekend in November. The Lysses (pronounced Lissies) is located about 5 minutes from the centre of Fareham. We found it a little difficult to find as the main signage on the hotel is for its Richmond Restaurant. It has a good car park, accessible through an archway to the right of the property. The friendly staff were very welcoming and helpful. Our spotlessly clean twin rooms were fairly well fitted out for 3*, but lack of a bedside light for one bed was disappointing. The beds were very comfortable and the decent sized flat screen TV with Freeview was a pleasant touch. The split level bathroom was quite nice, but spoilt by no extractor fan and one of those very flimsy shower curtains that always seems to stick to you and result in a flood. The public rooms were comfortable and cosy; bar food and ‘award winning’ restaurant meals were available only at limited times, however there are plenty of places to eat all day close by. We only ate breakfast in the hotel; it was freshly cooked and excellent. The bar is very quiet and only appeared to be used by hotel and restaurant patrons. Weekend rates seemed good value when compared to week day room charges. I would have no problem staying here again either with friends or family.
