“3rd visit - great value.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2014

Had a great weekend visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard works best spread over 2 or 3 days).
Chose to stay at The Red Lion because we know from previous experience that it is a "safe bet". Yes, redecoration wouldn't hurt, but there is a certain amount of charm in the shabby chic especially as we found everything very clean. The room was comfortable and breakfast and dinner in the restaurant delicious. Service was friendly and very helpful throughout. We also managed to get a fantastic deal in one of Old English Inns "flash sales" - join their e mailing list and look out for the bargains!
The hotel is a minutes walk from Fareham's excellent shopping centre. When we came in November my husband was too ill for us to do Portsmouth as planned, so I made use of this proximity to do most of most of my Christmas shopping. Also I made use of the free pass to the adjacent LA Fitness and pool.
As it happened, the spring weather this weekend (7th -9th March) was far more suitable for enjoying all aspects of the Historic Dockyard.
We asked around to see what else there was to do in the area so we would have an excuse to come back to the Red Lion - a home from home.

Lovely hotel. Warm welcome, the room was well presented and beautifully clean. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and the menu was good with lots of choice. Breakfast was very well organised and the poached eggs cooked to perfection. In fact we enjoyed ourselves so much that we have booked to stay again in April

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms very good.

Stayed here recently whilst on a business trip and as somewhere to rest your head for the night it's fine but I would have been unhappy if I had booked here for a longer stay. The room I had was very dated with frayed carpet and slightly yellowing walls. It wasn't the cleanest place I've stayed either but this had more to do with the fact that it just looked a bit tired..

Food isn't bad. Expect the kind of food you would get in weatherspoons and you won't be disappointed.

Would probably stay again for a single night.

This is a great place for dining, some things are a little pricey.
The pub section is quite small and very warm not a lot of ventilation and sometimes over crowded.
Drink prices one of the highest in town, but your paying for a classic original old building.
If you want to eat here wait until a little later in the evening when the restaurant section opens.
Staff are very friendly.

on arrival for a meal for nine of us we were informed that they had no table in our name.We insisted we had booked and were told by a very grumpy waitress to sit in the bar while it was sorted .We sat and sat nobody came back ,in the end my husband went to the hotel reception and found our meal booking ,it was a mistake on the part of the hotel. But although we asked if we could then sit at our table which we could see and was all laid up we were told no.The waitress informed us we had booked for 1.30 and it was only 1.20 .She then proceeded to tell us it was our fault as we had given the wrong name until it was pointed out that it was written correctly at reception and they had copied it out wrong at no time did we receive an apology and we wont be going back

Stayed here one night for a business dinner in Fareham, as more reasonable than Premier Inn and Holiday Inn and very convenient for Fareham old town centre. Good points good value for money (£52 B&B), free Cloud WiFi, free secure carpark, good cooked breakfast, tea/coffee, clean, warm plus free use of nearby LA Fitness. Bad points Door Lock (make sure you read the label as door does NOT auto lock), no room safe, in need of some TLC, damp in places (see photo), small room, 4ft double bed, small TV, could not lock window on ground floor and trouser press broken. If they could fix up the minor issues (even if price increased a little) it would really be very good! Good food very close by at Lauro's Brasserie and Villa Romana.

Room Tip: Check window locks or avoid ground floor.
