“overpriced for the experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

Sadly like so many designer boutique hotels the Aviator would have been amazing to stay in when it first opened. The new management don't seem to have fully maintained the 'glamour' and this hotel has a slight 'previously enjoyed' feel to it making it seem very over priced. The first warning sign was the worn leather on the reception desk. We then paid £185 for a normal size double room that instead of feeling excitingly remote along a chic dimly lit darkly decor'd corridor from the amazing spaceship like central atrium, felt simply like a long way from the entrance. The room was just disappointing: The remote control receiver on the tv had fallen off and was hanging down on its wire, the walls of the room were scuffed from so many other guests, the overhead shower squirts water in many different directions including at you when you try turning it on, the bathroom lights creak as they warm up, the room a/c rumbles, the free toiletries smell very cheap and nasty, the trickle of wi-fi although free was useless, and it's still UHT milk on the tea tray? not very 5 star. We won't be back

Went here just to try the Sunday luncheon in Late 2011......absolutely stunning interior we even asked for a grand tour of the rooms which they obliged us with, the restuarant is 1st class, we both enjoyed a scotch egg.. sounds a bit common I know but when it is done properly it is amazing just like the one we had, I have the roast Lamb and Mrs had the Chicken both well executed and very tasty, what made it really 1st class was the attitude of all the staff, they knew they were working in a fine establishment and that showed through thier skills and attention to detail.

Highly recommended aplogies for the late review.

I stay in quite a lot of hotels and I must say many of them blur a bit as time goes by, and generally I can only differentiate them by the levels of service/experience I had there. The decors are quite similar, ambience the same, and don't get me wrong this is not necessarily a bad thing. The Aviator Hotel certainly is nothing like that. Externally it looks more like a business facility than a hotel, and it is situated near one end of the runway at Farnborough Airport (no noise!!). As soon as you enter there is an aspect of "wow" or "ooh". Its hard to describe but the photos on the website give you a good idea. It has the feel of something different and an element of luxury.
The staff are very polite (although some were a little robotic), and helpful.
I didn't eat there but we did have a drink in the bar on the 1st floor which again was very stylised but also very dark, a bit like being in Las Vegas!
There is anopther bar on floor 4 which I guess may have more scenic view of airport, but I don't know as I didn't go in.
The room was spacious and well equipped and the furnishings were luxurious and modern and very pleasing. The bathroom had no bath but did have a superb shower and luxury bathroom fittings.
There was a safe in the room, iron etc and the tea making facilities were excellent, with sachets of real ground coffee and cafetiere - excellent.
Unlike other 5 star hotels I have stayed in this felt really different and luxurious.
I paid £125 for the room and breakfast which I believe may be a corporate rate, but I'd suggest that deals may be possible if you negotiate.
I hope you find my review helpful.

Room Tip: Maybe try to get one facing the airfield

This hotel is really well designed, the room was very comfortable, the staff were lovely - particularly the bar staff, dinner in the brasserie was delicious. The only problem was we had high expectations based on the hotel website and reviews on tripadvisor and the hotel was let down by the little things, the attention to detail that make a good hotel really great.

The Aviator is the sort of place that, because of it's location, you would spend a lot of time in relaxing, we would have liked to have some afternoon to enjoy whilst reading the paper. I'm not talking full on high tea but a cake or biscuit would have been welcome. We had a bit of a problem at breakfast which in my opinion is where hotels should get things bang on. We waited so long we had to give up or we would have been late checking out and it was just the sort of thing that takes the shine off what otherwise was a lovely relaxing weekend.

We got a great deal for the weekend and we had lovely time but had we paid the full rate I think we would have been disappointed. If the Aviator wants to be a truly great hotel they just need to work on the little things that make all the difference.

If you are looking for a luxury stay with a real difference then you can't go wrong with the aviator.

It's defintely one of the most original hotels we have stayed in - not just the fact that you can see planes land and take off from your room but the interior of the hotel is fabulous with little airplane themed touches everywhere, and a real standout entrance.

We stayed in the standard room which was very comfortable and luxurious. Make sure you ask for the airport side of the hotel if you want to see the landing strip. We were looking for a very short break just to chill out so the free movies on demand was a nice touch.

We also dined in the restaurant which was fantastic. The restaurant and bar was completely packed and a great buzz.
Definitely recommend the taster menu for a treat.

In terms of location this is no country hotel with countryside scenery and nice walks from the hotel - it really is all about the hotel, the airport view and the food so if you are looking for some luxury with a real difference only 1 hour from London then this won't disappoint.

The exterior really doesn't match this hotel interior -- it looks very unappealing from outside, but inside is very modern and almost luxurious. The reception is in 2nd floor and floors are covered with wall-to-wall carpet so not the nicest thing if you're travelling with heavy luggage (as I was...). Check-in was really pleasant and quick -- same with check-out.

Standard room was REALLY big! And beautiful. It was decorated with aviation theme. Bed was big, not the most comfortable I've had but ok. Wireless Internet was complimentary for 24hrs. There were some tea & coffee & hot chocolate items available as complimentary, that was nice. No noice from anywhere, of course that may have been due to the fact that my room was in the far end of corridor...

Breakfast selection was a bit narrow, but still ok. I would have wished a bit more fresh fruits, but otherwise good. Also international breakfast elements, not only toast & beans :)

Unfortunately I had only a very quick stop here so wasn't able to utilize hotel facilities, but based on first impression, I would definitely come back to see more.

Room Tip: room at far end of corridor are quiet

For my fiancees birthday, we spent the night at the Aviator and partook in the Tasting Menu offer. Absolutely loved it - really cool room overlooking the airport and the dinner in the restaurant was absolutely delicious. All the staff were professional, friendly and polite - service was superb. What was a bonus was the complimentary films in the room, we could have happily stayed all weekend! Breakfast was great the next day, wide choice of foods from continental to a very good Full English.

Room Tip: Airside Rooms are fun as you can spot the private jets land and take off!
