Having scoured the location for a combination of good food and a fun but challenging pub quiz, we decided on the Fox and Hounds. Despite living in Church Crookham for a couple of years I just popped in just the once for a drink a few years back, so this time was the first sit down meal and quiz - we had previously frequented other pubs in the area for our "quizzing fix".
Given that we made the trip down from London everything had to just right to make the evening worthwhile, and the Fox and Hounds didn't disappoint from the friendly and efficient service through to the food itself. Between the three of us we had the fish and chips, grilled gammon and chilli con carne, and the general consensus that everything was excellent. It was admittedly a little bit more expensive than the usual pub fare, but "you get what you pay for" can clearly be applied here. The first real indicator was the home-printed menu and the promise of locally-sourced and home-cooked ingredients.
My cod and chips was excellent, a substantial portion excellently cooked with what were clearly fresh ingredients. My partner's chilli was also excellent with a generous ratio of meat to rice, while my friend's grilled gammon was clearly a notch above the factory-produced rubbish you'd often get elsewhere. The little bowl of button mushrooms was a particularly nice touch.
The quiz also refreshingly non-formulaic, with a number of nice touches and a good balance of questions that can only be the result of someone who has thought about them rather than using one of those mass-printed sheets. The only regret was our scratching out a couple of ultimately correct answers and ending up in a tie-break for first place, which we then lost!
All in all, a great pub with a great atmosphere. Then there's the canal side view, which we sadly couldn't really enjoy because of the weather. Hopefully the sun will be shining for our next visit!
