“Good Hotel for price.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2014 via mobile

We stayed 4 nights for our wedding anniversary our room was large, clean the bed was one of the best we have ever had in a hotel. One thing we didn't like was the t.v. was on the far wall
too far for to to see well from the bed but there was 2 chairs we could have used. The food in the resurant was good 3 course for under a tenner my husband is a Coleliac and they know about that and we had two nice meals there. The breakfast is very good the staff were friendly and helpfull. Plenty of free parking you can walk to the shops in Havant. We would stay here again.

We would stay here again it was good value for money.

The bear is a very old coaching inn with buckets of character, it has a large restaurant , good sized bar and small but comfy rooms.Ours was up in the eaves , it was on an incline and just off of square as you would expect of a building this antique. The room was tidy, well equipped and pleasant. The restaurant is very spacious, the food is just about average , you would be advised to eat out at the local Indian or Chinese restaurants if you want to enjoy a good meal , if it's just something to fill a gap then the food is adequate at best.Having said that the staff were lovely , chatty and most helpful. There is a huge free car park and the hotel is 20 minutes drive from Portsmouth and its attractions , even less distance from the charming market town of Chichester and just an hour away from Brighton so it is very well positioned to explore the Sussex/ Hants border.

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper floor are smaller but quieter.

We booked this hotel direct with Greene King as part of a Christmas package. We also decided to book two extra nights either side of Christmas package dates. We paid in full but did not realise at the time this was non-refundable. That was the first mistake, the second mistake was not reading Tripadvisor before making the booking. I foolishly assumed that Greene King being a large organisation with certain standards, their hotels would be a credit to their Company. That was the third mistake. Please believe the previous reports and unless your expectations are low book elsewhere. The only plus we had was Christmas Lunch which was open and well attended by non-residents. That did get off to a bad start because a table that was supposed to be allocated wasn't and we were not asked for a pre-order.
The beds were comfortable but rooms are cold and musty. Plumbing is a nightmare as is the general decor throughout the hotel. Furniture surfaces in the rooms and restaurant are sticky. It was so bad we went to the shops to buy wipers and nice smelling candles.
As it was Christmas we decided to have dinner in the restaurant. One item was uncooked and food generally not very hot. Another first was at breakfast. We ordered scrambled eggs on toast which turned out to be served on a "crust". I complained and blow me down two days later it happened again.
On Boxing Day we were so fed up we left one day early and oddly no one in reception asked us if we had any problems or enjoyed our stay. Some of the staff do try but it must be soul destroying working there. A letter of complaint was sent to the hotel and head office when we got home. The reply was courteous and included a gift card as compensation, just enough to buy two main meals in one of their restaurants. I would not expect any improvement in this hotel until they have a MAJOR refurbishment.

Room Tip: Check your room be.fore you book in particulary the shower

Thankyou for taking the time to supply us with your feedback. I am sorry that on this occassion that we did not live upto your high standards. Greene King does operate an ongoing investment programme which I am sure we will be part of in the not too distant future

It was necessary for us to stay in Havant one night overnight to fulfil a family event (funeral).
Studying TripAdvisor beforehand there seemed to be a lot of negative reports on Bear Hotel but as it is most conveniently located near the railway station and centre of town we took a chance and pre-booked a room. We were VERY pleased that we did, as our experience of Bear Hotel was very positive throughout and any shortcomings that someone hyper-critical might raise are in fact fully understandable and acceptable and do not detract in any way from a stay at this Hotel.

We arrived by train late afternoon, short walk from the railway station, the lady receptionist had our pre-booking immediately to hand and processed paperwork quickly and efficiently, she was very pleasant, and courteously and cheerfully answered the few queries we had.
As stated, the hotel is centuries old and the basic structure and internal layout therefore obviously not able to be altered nowadays to any significant degree. The hotel has a good idea of giving you a pre-printed ticket as you book in, giving you an exactly detailed description of your route from Reception to your own bedroom. This was genuinely useful as the various staircases, several doorways, passages, and right and left turns are initially bewildering the first time you arrive, but if you follow the pre-printed ticket the route is easy.

Our allocated bedroom was of vast size. Also a good-size bathroom. Our immediate impression was that the room was going to be somewhat cold. However there was a
twin-linked radiator at low level under the window (cold) but had an unmarked chromium knob at one end. Turning this the radiator sprang into life and quickly warmed up, so after we got back from evening meal the room was well warm enough, and indeed remained so overnight.

As it was pelting with rain outside and as we do not know Havant at all it was logical to use the Hotel's own Restaurant for our evening meal. This was another most excellent decision.
When we entered the Restaurant we received a genuinely warm and welcoming greeting from the fair-haired waitress who served us throughout with considerable courtesy and just the right level of attentativeness to all our needs. We were left to enjoy an unhurried meal in peace but she was on hand whenever required. There was a large note on the pre-printed menu urging you to ask about the Chef's Daily Specials. We did this but were advised the Chef did not have any Specials that day !. However our waitress constructively used her own initiative to add her own recommendation that if we did not spot anything else we would find "Fish & Chips" on the standard menu particularly nice today. However, we saw "Mixed Grill" on the menu and both my wife and myself decided to have that instead.
This proved to be a most excellent choice.
The centre-piece of the Mixed Grill was three separate grilled steaks, a chicken, a beefsteak, and a gammon, ( note taken of individual cooking preference for the beefsteak). each steak was not just a token portion but generously sized. The steaks were complemented with a bewildering selection of additions, fried egg, tomato, onion rings, petit pois, (possibly others) and generous portion of chips, all perfectly cooked and nicely hot, beautifully presented on a huge plate.. It seemed somewhat of a marvel that so many things (including such fragile items as fried egg) had been cooked to perfection for a simultaneous serving.
The waitress produced on request mayonnaise for the chips, nicely served in its own dish.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I believe that in all respects this was the finest Mixed Grill I have ever eaten in any Restaurant in my lifetime (82 years).

Back in the bedroom and time for bed the beds at first touch feel 'hard', but in practice the mattresss are just the right level of correct firmness and support. The duvet bedclothes were sparkling clean and very soft and it was immediately most comfortable on getting into bed and readily falling asleep. In fact I slept soundly for a continuous spell of seven hours which is better than I do at home in my own bed !. Praise indeed !.

Next morning to the restaurant for Breakfast and the same fair-haired waitress on duty, still as cheerful, helpful and efficient as the night before. Still well-fed from the previous night's meal we only needed cold cereal and croissant breakfast, but noted there was a wide range of traditional breafast cooked items we could have had if desired.
The surprising thing at breakfast-time was the large number of other guests who now emerged, so there had been a substantial overnight presence of guests in the hotel which we had not realised were 'in', as the hotel was overall 'super-quiet'. BUT, wherever had all these people gone for their last night's meal ? ( the restaurant had only been lightly attended the previous evening ) ---all those people had clearly missed the opportunity of having a really excellent evening meal in the in-hotel Restaurant.

The paperwork within the hotel is much more efficient than that experienced at other 'chain' hotels. The waitress had already given us a fully detailed and itemised printed list of the bar and restaurant items that were to be paid at check-out time This was fully accurate and all charges reasonable so there were no surprises at check-out (as you often get).

At morning check-out there was a male Receptionist who was equally courteous, pleasant and helpful over getting us a taxi neatly pre-timed to fit in with the funeral timings. A number of signs and notices around the hotel refer to "Ben and his Team" and we assume this may have been "Ben" though his name was not announced. "Ben" can be assured that his female staff equally uphold the standards and courtesy of the hotel in his absence ( as night before).

In summary, one can partially see what some of the pther TripAdvisor comments refer to.
The Hotel is an ancient building (which is unalterable) and the general decor needs some updating, which apparently the brewery have on a future programme. Meanwhile, yes, there is a lot of threadbare ( but still serviceable ) carpet, the furniture is old in the bedrooms and somewhat mis-matched, but this does not detract in any way from its usefulness and serviceability. and there are useful items you do not readily get nowadays in 'chain' hotels.

Bathroom was scrupulously clean, generous provision of toiletries, also generous provision of consumable items on complimentary drinks tray in the bedroom.

One is left to wonder at the motivation and pedantic expectations of some of the persons who post negative comments on TripAdvisor ? . Our experience of Bear Hotel , Havant, was of an excellent stay, a comfortable night's sleep, and above all a memorably good experience of evening meal in the Restaurant. If ever we have to go to Havant area again (or hear of anyone else who does) we have a singular recommendation to make as to where to stay !.

Room Tip: Do understand that access to bedrooms may be unsuitable for persons with severe disability or mobili...

We stayed just before Christmas and a lady staying there alone had her case stolen from her room - the second time this had happened in two months!!!

Apart from the above the hotel is extremely poor condition, tired/tatty and in need of complete refurbishment/updating - as many other reviewers have pointed out here. Some staff members are pleasant enough other indifferent/unhelpful - we found the afternoon receptionist much more welcoming and helpful than the morning one.

Shame about all the above as the hotel if in an excellent location in Havant being very central and only a short distance from the rail station.

Thankyou for your recent comments. I can only apologise for the incident that the police are dealing with. GreeneKing do operate a refurbishment programme which is on going and I am sure that in the not too distant future that Bear will be part of that programme

The building is quite old and the entire hotel really needs some refurbishment, but having said that, it's a decent place to stay. The rooms are a reasonable size, the members of staff I spoke to were all friendly and efficient, and the breakfast was excellent.

The first room we were offered stank of cigarettes so we asked for, and got, another that was smoke free.

Car parking is available and is free for the duration of the stay.

Average room on the top floor with no lift access. Dodgy satelite signal to the TV, but altogether room was adequate and comfortable. VERY comfortable bed. Poor lighting in the room though. Bar area very nice and homely, we attended a New Year's Eve party which had a buffet which was very comprehensive and excellent value for money. Staff very friendly and polite - I loved being called ma'am by the barman!
