Combining a classical Lakefield design with a blend of formal and informal planting, English traditions and Australian flair, West Green offers intimacy and spectacle in a country setting. Access to the beautiful Victorian greenhouses is included and a visit to the formally planted vegetable garden is a must! “entrancing garden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

This 10 acre garden is brilliantly laid out so that you pass from one area to another and are continually surprised as you turn a corner. The informal lake and water areas are very quiet and peaceful in contrast to the crammed wall garden which is full of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The café has a good selection of tasty food.

“Lovely evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

We went there for the annual West Green House Opera and we love it immensely. We walked the very pretty, well maintained garden, before drinks and canapés on the lawn; then we saw the first 2 acts of the opera before a sit down dinner under a marquee. By the time the evening close all parts of the garden were illuminated and we could not stop admiring the fountains, the lakes, the gazebo, the wooden bridge and could not stop taking pictures. Certainly an evening to remember and we will go back.

“Stunning Garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

My wife and I took my mother for a walk and a bite to eat, the garden, about 10 acres, is laid out into two main sections, the first, with the lake and water features, and the second is the wall garden, both well maintained and with an array of different plants and colours.
The lake area is very peaceful, walking across the lawn to the waters edge looking at all the fish in the lake. and the statue dedicated to the gardener.
As for the walled garden, which is immaculately maintained, with it's fruit and vegetable area, and cottage garden borders, made for a most enjoyable visit.
We decided to have a lunch, the three of us, and this is were the praise ends, we were all left wanting more, as the portion sizes were tiny, me and my mother decided to have cake as we were still hungry, and even this, the slice was so thin, it was certainly not worth the expense.
However if you are a National Trust member you can visit this garden free of charge, even though it is not a trust property.

“a nice place to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

We went to West Green House on our way back from Torquay and spent very pleasant few hours there, visiting the wonderfully maintained grounds as well as their excellent café which serves wonderful food, great coffee and delicious cakes. The formal garden is quite small but impeccably planned and maintained and their park is a wonderful place to relax, take pictures and enjoy with your family. West Green House is a nice garden but is rather small and should be visited if you are in the vicinity – if we made a trip there all the way from SE London and spent two hours in the car to get there we would be rather disappointed. Compared with many other National Trust properties this one is much smaller in its scale but is still worth visiting, especially on a nice, warm day.

When you pull up in the car park you will find you are staring at the smartest greenhouses you will have ever seen. They are surrounded by fruit trees splayed out along them which in turn are edged with dwarf box hedging, giving a very smart and manicured look.

Upon going through into the gardens we found them to be laid out as a series of rooms which are beautiful and were a riot of colour and scent. There is a fantastically shaped water garden (the paradise garden) which was amazing and full of lillies. Turn another corner and you find a grand water staircase. The only thing that spoilt it was the electric hedge trimmers which disturbed the peace and tranquility of the place - Oh for the days of "snip, snip, snip".

It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
