“High marks for OLD THORNS HOTEL+GOLF”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2014

We went mainly for the golf and pick this 4 star hotel and were not disappointed. Very good welcome and help when we had to come back another time due to the golf course being closed. No complaints on the room, very comfy bed, powerful shower and quiet room. Much choice for part buffet style dinner (3 meats), unlimited veg, and excellent buffet breakfast - both using quality ingredients and well cooked (almost fine dining without waitress service). The golf course was excellent in terms of design and challenge although the fairway was very wet with one or two holes being hard to find. For £99 per person for one night double room (King sized bed), 2 rounds, dinner and breakfast - very good value although a bit far from N London. We did not use their spa or pool, hence can't comment on these.

Room Tip: Room in the old building would be near the health facilities.

We booked a stay at Old Thorns for an overnight Spa Retreat package and I have to say it exceeded all expectations. We arrived early so enjoyed a quick lunch in the sports bar which was good quality pub fare and ticked all of the boxes. We checked in soon after and had a wander around the place. We loved the modern, quirky styling and ambience. Every member of the team we came into contact with were both friendly and professional.
We made our way to the spa for a pre booked massage (which was AMAZING) then over to the 'Wellness suite' for a sauna and jacuzzi. All of the facilities were faultless. Couple of hints - ask at the spa for a gown and slippers and you ll need a quid for the lockers.
For dinner we ate in the carvery which was good quality and a good selection. Usually the mention of a carvery makes my toes curl but was pleasantly surprised here and the desserts certainly kept us quiet for a while.
We also managed to enjoy a cheeky cocktail in the champagne bar and theres a stunning pub within walking distance. Wish we had stayed for longer!
Rooms were spacious and bright and the beds were comfortable. Only slight issue we had was the room not as requested (I asked for a twin not a double - could have been awks!) But again this was rectified within minutes, which was impressive.
Will definitely be back again and certainly recommending! £89 each for dinner, bed, breakfast, one treatment and use of all facilities. Worth every penny! Thank you!

We were all really impressed with the hotel. I was not expecting such a high standard of spa and facilities. We did the girls night in package and as we were a large group we could stay in the 10 bed apartment. The big apartment was the best bit as we felt like we were on a massive sleepover.

Clean and Spa facilities were great.

We loved the champagne bar and had a little glass of sparkly before our meal.

The meal was a cavery style but it suited us - we were quite happy as we weren't there for a posh meal.

we had a lovely walk around the golf course on the Sunday. We can't wait to book for next year.

We had heard a lot about Old Thorns from lots of couples who have attended wedding fairs and are considering this as a wedding venue. Their high opinions of this hotel led me to book a night here to celebrate my boyfriends birthday earlier this week.

The hotel was easy to find and the first impression of the hotel was very impressive, it looked liked a lovely hotel. We went into the hotel and so far everything was as expected the décor looked very nice and the front of house staff were very pleasant. We were asked if we had stayed at the hotel before, which we advised we hadn't. I had expected to be told about all the leisure facilities that were on offer and the times for dinner and breakfast, but we didn't get anything. We were just told were our room was and hoped we enjoyed our stay.

We entered our room (115) and I was impressed by the room size and the size of the bed. The bathroom was a good size as well. The bed and the linen was comfortable and clean, which is always a bonus! We relaxed after a hetic day in London and decided to head out for dinner. We followed directions in the hotel to Kings Brasserie, we were greeted straight away by a member of the restaurant staff greeted us and asked if we had been here before, we advised we hadn't. He walked us to our table via the carvery, which all looked as though it had been out a while and the meat was covered over with tin foil. We were shown to our seats and appeared to be the only 2 people in the restaurant, apart from a table of 4/5 people that were on tables in what appeared to be a private area, with table cloths and waitress service?! We were provided menu's and asked if we would like to see the wine menu which we declined. We were handed the menu's and given a jug of water - we werent asked if we would like any other form of drinks. We took a look over the menu and I was disappointed to see that it was a choice of carvery, goats cheese tart, mushroom risotto (all £14.50) or Steak or Tuna Steak on a volcanic rock (£18). We made the choice to avoid the carvery as we couldn't be sure how long the meat had been sat out, my boyfriend went for the steak and I picked the Goats Cheese Tart, we also asked if we could order drinks, which was accepted. Both dishes came out and my partner was pleased with his meal, his steak was good and although the chips were clearly oven chips and the salad was just rocket and tomato he enjoyed it. My meal came out and was just a tart on a plate......it had eaten a quarter of my tart when we were asked if everything was ok with my meal, I asked if I was due any vegetables with my meal to which I was told that yes, I could help myself to the vegetables on the carvery. I am not sure if it was in the "rules" but I helped myself to a bowl of salad. Once we finished our meals, our plates were taken and we were asked if we would like any tea or coffee, we declined but said we would be interested in dessert, our plates were taken and nothing else said. We must have waited about 5 minutes and were asked if we would like the bill, to which I advised we were waiting on desert - to which we were told that we needed to go the desert counter and someone would be there to serve us shortly. Desert was good and we then paid our bill and headed back to our room.

We both slept well and it was nice to look out of the window in the morning and see lots of open green space.

Breakfast was much improved and the restaurant staff were attentive and everyone staying at the hotel was sat together so there was definitely some atmosphere in the morning which was lovely.

Soon after breakfast we headed off on our day, we didn't get to experience the leisure side of the hotel as we didn't feel that it was worth it and we also hadn't been explained where it was and if there was lockers to use for our stuff or even if it was included in our package.

I am in 2 minds about returning to this hotel, but to be honest, unless a friend was having a wedding here I probably wouldn't come back.

Our daughter and son-in-law chose Old Thorns for their wedding in December 2013. We stayed the weekend and Old Thorns made the whole experience absolutely wonderful for everyone who attended. The ceremony in the Hampshire Suite was so well organised, the reception was superb with the standard of the food being brilliant for all our guests.

Thank you Old Thorns you made our daughters special day even more perfect. One small bonus was that the weather was an absolutely wonderful December day with a brilliant sunset over the golf course. We would really recommend this venue for your wedding and would like to thank the staff who helped us so much for their attentive manner, wonderful service and for being such lovely people. x

Room Tip: All the rooms in the annexe building that I saw were lovely

We found this room from late rooms which had fair reviews! The location suited so we booked a one night stay for business. We had very mixed thoughts on the hotel, So to tell you the good first..... Very friendly helpful staff, great overall decor to the hotel. The bad .... we moved rooms as we had a connecting room initially that you could hear everything the people next door were saying both the rooms smelt of damp.
We ate in the carvery at 7.15pm which is a massive restaurant and there were 2 other people eating hence there was no atmosphere what so ever. The food was far from fresh and cost £14.50 for one course. We eat quickly and got out !
Breakfast was just ok compared to other hotels that we eat in on a regular basis.
Overall summary is that we found all of the staff great but the food and rooms did not live up to the spectacular image that the hotel gave when you first arrived

Room Tip: Ask to smell the room first and avoid a connecting room
