My husband and I went to the hotel with another couple for a golf weekend. We met in the Spike bar and ordered sausage baps which when arrived consisted of a roll and two small sausages,no butter or extras very steep at £3.50 each.
The golf course was fabulous if very wet and muddy in places and given a few dry days in the Spring it will be even better. We found the round very slow not helped by at least one four ball pushing in on the 10th, the whole round took us 5 mins short of five hours and as much of this was in pouring rain we were tired and hungry when we got in.
Our room looked fine the bed was huge no complaints there.
The restaurant was just not good. One of the starters was a prawn dish which consisted of three prawns and one was a goats cheese starter the cheese was three teaspoon sizes of cheese and some lettuce they were £7.50 each. Not what two 6ft tall hungry men wanted. To prove a point they managed to get the whole starter on one fork!
We all opted for the carvery as a main as we had seen the size of the confit of duck go past.We were allowed on small slice of beef (about a tennis ball size) and one slice of ham. There were very few potatoes and three yorkshire between four of us we asked for more but were told we would have to wait for half an hour.
When we got to our room at 11.30 there appeared to be a nightclub either underneath us or very near, after an hour I tried to ring reception to ask when the noise would stop and despite trying four times over half and hour couldnt get a response at all. Fell asleep and woke at 01:40 and it had stopped by then.
Woke in the morning to lovely sunny morning, breakfast was very good and plentiful which was lucky as very hungry!
The surroundings are lovely and very pretty but the pathetic helpings in the restaurant would stop us going back again.

We had heard many good things about the hotel and were very much looking forward to the spa and golf weekend we had booked with friends. The girls were heading off to the spa and the boys to the golf course .... we couldn't use the spa area as they had ran out of robes and slippers as their tumble dryer was broken and the poolside was too cold to sit around in our swimming costumes, the staff at the spa had no record of our prebooked treatments and so were left high and (very) dry. We managed to book some treatments at later times which were good treatments however lasted allot less time than advertised. We were left sitting in our rooms all day one of which didn't have a working TV! Our husbands then returned to say that they had only managed to play 9 of the 18 holes of golf that they had paid for as the course was so busy and felt very disappointed. All of these points I then raised with the very helpful lady on reception whom made a note of this and passed it onto her manager. On check out the next day I have never met anyone as rude as the manager .... there were numerous couples complaining about not receiving room service, not managing to get into the restaurant, no advertised meal times.
The price difference between the 2 bars was quite steep too! In Spikes bar it was around £3.50 for a pint of lager, in the champagne bar up to nearly £5.00 per pint for exactly the same drink.
Anyone thinking of taking any of their own food and drink to keep in their room should also be aware that there is £100 corkage fee for anyone found eating their own food or drinking their own drinks in their room!
There are no movie channels in the rooms and the water doesn't go down the plug hole when you have a shower, the pool is tiny with limited seating, the grounds outside are a haven for golfers (many of them NOT pros) so be aware of flying golf balls if going for a wander.
I have never met anyone quite as rude as the manager, which is a shame as the remainder of the team at the hotel were very nice and very eager to please.
On the upside the beds are HUGE and very comfortable and the rooms aren't amazing but clean and warm.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel as unfortunately despite the best efforts of the staff the property is ran by a little witch who's famous last words are "We can't do anything about that" followed by "That will be ££££ then please"! There were alledgedly a number of people that were so dis-satisfied with the service that they left without paying?!?! I wish I was one of them!

The hotel itself is situated within the grounds of a large golf course. We found the staff very helpful and friendly throughout the hotel. Our executive room was modern in decor and had a view across the golf course, very clean and had all amenities that you would expect. The only down side was that these rooms were situated away from the main hotel, so you did have to go outside to get across to the restaurant. The hotel spa and golf complex, although very good at the moment are still being expanded on and will eventually be fantastic.

We booked our wedding at Old Thorns in Jan 2010 and having read some of the reviews on this site were somewhat nervous...........

We had no reason to be, the staff at the hotel made our day very special, a big thankyou to Donna,Diane and Stuart. You and your staff were superb in every way and your professional and helpful manner ensured our day was truly memorable. The hotel itself was a fantastic setting with many of our guests commenting on the plush decor and surroundings and it proved itself to be a superb venue for our wedding.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel as a wedding venue.

I visit Portsmouth on business 4-5 times a year and now only ever stay at Old Thorns, it is 22 miles of A3 with no traffic jams. The staff are all very friendly and efficient, the scenary across the golf course is beautiful, the rooms are very well decorated, immaculately clean and spacious. The room service menu is a little limited but great quality, as it breakfast. I only have a couple of minor negative comments. The lighting in the room is not great if you need to work, there are no biscuits on the hospitality tray and there is an extra charge for newspapers which I think is excessive. Otherwise one of the nicest hotels that I visit, totally recommended.

My husband and I stayed for two nights at Old Thorns and we had a wonderful time. The building works are almost complete and they certainly didn't impact on our enjoyment of the hotel complex. The staff were unfailingly polite and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his spa treatment whilst I enjoyed the lovely pool area with its sauna and steam room. The food was predictable but well cooked and hot. Our bedroom was spacious and well appointed coffee/tea/milk etc. were topped up regularly. I would recommend anyone to stay here.

Health Facilities
Disappointed. The Health Spa is advertised on the website as fully open. I did not use the Spa for treatments, but I did use the pool. Above the swimming pool were two recessed panels, which would have had glass in them as part of the ceiling at some point. The glass was broken and so the ceiling was partially covered with mdf board which leaked (it had been raining), cold drips on your back while swimming, it looked unsafe too. Not luxury. Also states on website "we welcome children to use the Health Spa between the hours of 10am and 6pm daily - some restrictions will apply" well as far as I could see from the hotel information, at weekends children (under 16) can use the pool only from 7am till 11am. Not that children would want to use it in the state it's in, to be honest, but as they charge quite a bit for the Family Suites, you'd think this one facility would be more family friendly. One small communial changing room women, which you use to change for your Spa treatments into robes, also used for the gym and for the pool. Not even one small changing room for children to change in. If there is going to be a new Health Club in the new build, then things might be different, I hope so. At the moment the pool is less than average and one quick swim was enough. Check before booking, if you like to swim, if you do, don't bother. There were a group of young women who must have booked a spa break, sitting at a table near the pool. I felt so sorry for them, it was damp, cold and had no atmosphere in there at all, it didn't promote a relaxing atmosphere.

Dining
We ate for breakfast, and the hot buffet was OK. The tea and coffee must have been standing for a while and was not very hot, lukewarm. The pastries and croissants we hard, certainly not fresh on the day. The fruit selection was a mixture of canned peaches, canned peach halves and, chopped fresh apples. More, fresh fruit would have been nice. The dining area was lovely with nice views over the golf course, the staff doing their best, but the service could be improved, it appeared like they needed more training. Not their fault, possibly the Managers should give more guidance.

Room
Clean and spacious, we were in the new building outside of the main block. The rooms were quiet and the beds comfortable. We had a view of the car park, but that didn't bother us as we were only there for two nights. The bathroom toiletries were minimal. Must have been commented on before as there was a note in the bathroom, saying you could purchase more from the hotel. The room had uplighters, but only one bedside lamp, dimly lit with a red bulb. Not great for reading by. In the bathroom, the shower height adjustment had broken, but we managed to temporally fix it, so it did not fall down. We did inform reception, who said the shower would be fixed for the next guests so they didn't have the same problems as us, and did apologise to us, also saying there should be two lamps! Outside the rooms, the corridors were loud and every conversation along the corridor could be heard. For some reason the two sets of fire doors in the corridors were open all the time, even when the maids trolly was in the corridor, so staff weren't shutting them either.

Didn't play golf. Can't comment.

Worth it?
For approx £100 per night B&B. No.
If you stay please leave feedback on a guest comment card (ask reception if not in your room). I think the owners believe they are providing a luxury service and pricing themselves according, but they're not. It's a shambles. They need to remove the gold and silver ostentatious thrones and concentrate on the little things that make luxury hotels worth a second visit. We won't be staying again.
