“simply the best!”
Reviewed 18 August 2011

This was our 4th stay at Chewton Glen and it never disappoints.
The service is excellent. The rooms are lovely and the spa is one of the best l've ever used, and l've certainly been in a few! If you want to treat yourself, don't hesitate to book.
The location is great too, with some excellent walking.

Room Tip: the standard rooms are lovely

I was thrilled to read that this couple enjoyed every element of Chewton Glen and have done so on several occasions. We very much look forward to welcoming them back again in the not too distant future.

We had high expectations of Chewton Glen, but the hotel and staff managed to meet and exceed them during our week-long stay. Welcome, food, decor, spa, setting - all were excellent. Service was friendly and relaxed yet professional. The duplex family rooms are very well laid out.

Chewton Glen. Well its big, the grounds are huge, about half of Hampshire, there are a lot of yellow flowers around the front entrance.

It is a Spa Hotel; slim, middle-aged, well-off guests, fighting a rear-guard action against advancing decrepitude, walk around in white waffle textured dressing gowns laughingly labelled ‘extra-large’.

A first impression counts, in this case not a good one, standing at the front entrance over-loaded with luggage and not a porter in sight. Whilst the wait for one to appear was not over-long it was still time enough for the taxi driver to get back out of the car & volunteer to help us inside with our bags, and all three of us to start loading up with luggage. On the plus side the porter did apologise on making an appearance.

Reception was efficient and the receptionist very polite, friendly & welcoming. When taken to our room the porter with no hint of irony described it as the best in the hotel for its proximity to the Spa facilities. Obviously a graduate of the Tony Blair School of Spin the flip side being, furthest from the dining room/reception/bar, down a maze of corridors that would have taxed Captain Cook’s navigational skills let alone my wife’s who gets lost in her handbag. Little signs such as ‘not far now’, ‘to reception’ and ‘break glass for survival supplies’ might have helped.

The bronze bedroom at over £430 for B&B on a Cunard pre-cruise deal (which includes transport to Southampton docks & parking while away) was about as small as it could be without being legitimately mistaken by Housekeeping for a broom cupboard. The wallpaper not unfairly invites comparison with the pattern on the dress my mother wore to my sister’s wedding back in ’91. However the bed was comfortable and there was a balcony which was a bonus and on which we enjoyed a very good room service breakfast the following day.

But there is something not quite right with Chewton Glen and I can’t quite put my finger on it.

It’s very clean and tidy, not at all careworn, the public rooms look good, the food is also good; not quite up to Michelin Star standards but ok, even if given my last comment, somewhat over-priced; if a Michelin Star were 10/10 then I would give it an 8.

In the final analysis I think it lacks a soul. It has a THF 1980’s feel about it, no more conviviality than the Heathrow Hilton. And I can only put that down to the service not being quite up to that what I expected. Shortly after arrival we witnessed a stately old lady, dressed for all the world as the last Tsarina of all the Russians, having to find a waiter because she had no napkins for her afternoon tea; she did not even get an apology just “OK, I’ll bring some over”.

When having pre-dinner cocktails the attending employee looked as if they had slept in their uniform, it had more creases than Whistler’s Mother’s face and not particularly clean, sort of Whistler’s Mother with a heavy cold. This not only evidences a lack of personal pride but of poor management control. To top this off we were asked to describe the flavour of the nuts accompanying our pre-dinner cocktails as the employee would like to know for the benefit of the guests but, employees were not allow to sample them.

Our guest had Foie Gras as a first course, a huge portion, double what she could eat; a sad waste of a delicacy, all that animal suffering merely to be left on a plate and thrown in a bin (as a result I felt obliged to eat the extra slice and it was very good). When serving our main course the waiter patently did not know what sauce went with which dish, my Hollandaise disappeared back to the kitchen before I even knew it was there.

Finally and sin of sins, waiting staff avoided eye contact as they walked past the table; this is why you don’t see many ostriches employed in restaurants.

Overall the food was very good but poor service will ruin the best meal and good service will elevate an ordinary meal or experience to a good one, and so on.

The fact that the service from the Receptionist & room service breakfast were very good, also get lost in the mire of the general impression I had of this hotel.

I don’t take great pleasure in making these comments as it is our hard earned money that pays for these luxury breaks. We frequently stay in 5 star hotels and expect a high level of comfort and service when an establishment purports to be the best at what it does.

We recently stayed at Gidleigh Park and maybe it is unfair to make comparisons as CG is a larger hotel, but what Gidleigh do, they do right, the service was impeccable with members of staff constantly on hand.

We have also stayed at The Langham which is at the other end of the scale in hotel size, but again the service was excellent with all members of staff acknowledging you when you passed them in corridors or public rooms.

Both these elements of service we felt were lacking at CG.

In the final analysis if you put yourself at the top of the heap you have to get it objectively right for every guest (and subjectively right for as many as possible) no matter how long they are staying or what they are spending, in this case I would respectfully suggest CG dropped the ball.

Chewton Glen has all of the top class ingredients to make it a great experience; but for lack of a horseshoe nail a kingdom was lost and Chewton could lose the same for lack of a Corby Clothes Press and a bag of nuts.

It is s shame that this reviewer did not seem to get the real measure of Chewton Glen however it is impossible to suit everyone’s tastes. Under normal circumstances the service we offer is very much on a par with the other wonderful hotels mentioned by name although Chewton Glen is undoubtedly much larger. Normally the calibre and friendliness of the staff is what sets us apart from many other hotels and I am saddened that this was certainly not the case on this occasion.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. It is the most stunning place we have ever been to. The bedroom was huge and just so lovely with a gorgeous bathroom and there were lots of huge fluffy towels. The spa facilities and restaurant werel excellent. For a special occasion it is worth every penny. Just wish we could have afforded 2 nights as we didn't want to leave. They even left a birthday card and balloon outside our bedroom door and presented my husband with a little birthday cake after our dinner. We really felt pampered and we will definitely save up and stay there again.

My husband and I love the Chewton Glen, it is our little bit of heaven away from home. Every good review written on Trip Advisor is spot on, the staff, food, rooms and spa are amazing - it really is all amazing!! In fact, we're off tomorrow for another night's stay and I'm so excited to be going back.... again!

Chewton Glen has always been at the pinnacle of English hotel keeping but our stay for one night before flying to the channel islands from Southampton was the perfect way to begin a holiday. It's the way they do everything with such perfection while still retaining a grounded sense of friendliness that is striking. They meet you quickly and readily, everything is explained with just the right balance and they walk to the room is achieved with such a friendly interest. The detail in the room is exceptional. From a beautifully laid out map on how to walk through the woods to the sea (including how long) to complementary post cards with First Class stamps already in place! The new restaurant is light, brilliantly run with a fine contemporary European menu. Surely for the balance of everything this must be the finest hotel in England

Chewton Glen is only half an hour from Southampton Airport (and Docks) and hence it is the perfect place to stop off before flying (or Cruising). We are always striving for perfection and never rest on our laurels for one second. I am particularly pleased that these guests appreciated the friendly yet professional staff and our new restaurant which we launched in May. Thank you for your kind words.

I would highly recommend this place if you want to get away from the stresses of everyday life or are celebrating a special event.
The hotel is in beautiful grounds with copper hammocks to laze in and outdoor pool/tennis courts/croquet lawn. For those golfing widows, the spa is perfect to treat yourself and the staff are attentive to your every need.
The Vetiver restaurant had wonderful food and you can also have afternoon tea in the lounge.

We took the beach walk from the hotel to the sea which took about 20mins and was well worth it. If you carry on, you"ll also get to Highcliffe castle which had wonderful grounds and tea rooms.

We were upgraded to the junior suite which was made even more beautiful with a terrace/recliners outside facing the beautiful grounds.

All in all a great place to unwind and wonderful staff that make you feel very special-my husband and I don't normally like going back to the same places to stay, but we felt we should make an exception in the case of Chewton Glen. Would highly recommend it!

Many guests don’t realise that we are only a 15-20 minute walk from the sea and a quick jaunt down the Chewton Bunny path to the Solent Coast is one of many activities for our guests to enjoy. There are many golf widows to be found in the spa however there are plenty of complete novices on the golf course too as we have no rules and therefore anyone can play. Use of the course is also complimentary too. We are delighted that these guests made the most of their stay and are delighted that they will break their rule of not returning to the same place twice!
