Arriving at a hotel with two pre-schoolers at midnight, jet lagged following a 14 hour flight, and 2 hours drive would appear to bode far from well, however from the moment we pulled up outside the hotel everything seemed easy.

We were escorted to our treehouse in a golf cart, and entered possibly one of the most pratical yet stylish 'apartments/ suites' I have come across. Waiting for our two fractious children were a plate of cookies, and strawberries with their names written in chocolate. Were this not enough to thrill our tired charges then the present which waited for them alongside the confectionery certainly clinched the deal. A well stocked fridge and assortment of teas and awesome coffee machine saw Mum and Dad happy too.

A quick dip in the hot tub before bed sent us all off into a sleep which lasted far longer than antipated.

Breakfast in the treehouses is a joy, particularly if you have pre-schoolers. A hamper full of artisan goodies is delivered in the morning, meaning you can choose what you eat and when.....and if the children have a paddy it doesn't matter, as there's no one around to witness it.

The treehouses are wonderful for families; the curves of the treehouse structure are mirrored in the beautiful family bathroom where you can bath looking out to the trees, the master bedroom feels light and airy with a touch of luxury, and the children loved their 'nest' in the attic, where their bedroom was located. With a separate living area and compact, but perfectly functioning kitchen area the space is exceptionally well thought out.

The largest accolade has to go to the staff at Chewton Glen. They were terrific. All of them. I have to make a particular mention for David our Concierge. His style was perfectly suited to our needs; friendly and relaxed, without being too intrusive, exceptionally helpful - we came to rely on him.

Children can dine with the adults from 6pm until 8pm, and on a weekend a 'kids' buffet is provided. Whilst my children dined on sausage and chips I had the pleasure of being able to sample the sea bass from the restaurant dinner menu, which was terrific. If was so lovely to eat a 'grown up' meal whilst my little ones happily munched on children's fodder.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chewton Glen, there was so much to do with our 2 and 4 year old, but not enough time to do it....we'll just have to return.

Room Tip: If you can 'slurge' the Treehouses are a great treat.

What a wonderful spa resort! The room was large with our own garden, the spa facilities are very impressive and the restaurant also left a great impression (one of the highlights). The territory around the hotel is very green and the sea is only 20 min walk away. Highly recommended hotel

Third trip to CG and remains tops for quality of overall experience. Service is consistently exceptional and food and rooms as you would expect from such a venue. Worth a walk / cycle to the coast. Still a favourite...

5*:
Beautiful grounds, lovely 20mn walk down to the sea via the hotel grounds and public woods.
Attractive building, stylish & generally beautifully maintained.
Lovely bedroom with very comfortable bed, large bathroom with bath and walk in shower (and TV).
Beautiful spa facilities, elegant room housing the large pool, and separate large spa pool with misc. massage jets, outside jacuzzi.
Can easily spend a couple of days chilling out without leaving the 'estate'

4* (or less)
Dinner was unimpressive.
The vegetarian main was the ubiquitous something stodgy with goats cheese or was it mushrooms. Probably pasta, don't remember. So asked for a selection of vegetables instead. Ended up with a generous plate, but with enough beetroot on it for 4 people. The next day the vegetarian offer on the menu was the same, so I asked if the chef could suggest something as long as it was without mushrooms, goats cheese, pasta or risotto. The waiter came back offering pasta with mushrooms! Frustrated I requested pappardelle with kale. What came was completely dry and extremely disappointing (£25?). I really think they could do better! And the bread rolls were dull too (what no sourdough?).
The service, while friendly, was more 3*. And we were seated in a dull area with really only the staff comings and goings as a distraction.
Needless to say, on our next night we dined out locally (also disappointing). There is so much hype about food in this country, but we usually find it sadly lacking and often pretentious.

Lounge/bar: Adequate, but not that inviting. The hotel is very popular at locals at lunchtime and weekends so the public areas get overrun. We tended to hang around in the spa cafe where they made a good cappuccino.

Pool/spa: Although beautiful, the locals etc coming on day membership feels intrusive.

Bedroom: No tea-making (or Nespresso) facilities? No plugs by bed for mobiles etc.

Dear Guest

Your rather mixed review has made sad reading. Whilst I am pleased that we met you expectation in some respects, we have clearly fallen short in others, for which I am truly sorry.

I must say that I was surprised at your observations on the selection of dishes suitable for vegetarians, we normally receive much praise for the efforts that the kitchen make to keep this innovative and interesting. We also offer a full vegetarian tasting menu, from which any one of the dishes are adaptable for a larger main course if required. Luke Matthews, our Executive Head Chef, has asked me to apologise for the disappointing dish. We are fortunate to have an in-house baker, who produces a changing selection of breads on a daily basis. I have passed your suggestion for sourdough bread. We appreciate your comments regarding the bar and restaurant and I realise that the matter of décor is a personal choice. We have a wonderful interior designer who worked with various designs of lighting, fittings and soft furnishings to finally arrive at the current interior ambiance for the hotel. To be honest, we receive so much positive feedback for both areas that I am only sorry that this particular effect is not to your liking.

As a local person, you will be aware that Chewton Glen is a popular venue for celebrating a special occasion. That said, we are conscious that we have both resident and non-resident guests and manage our bookings to ensure that the enjoyment of one guest does not impact upon another. We only accommodate a very small number of non-resident guests over the weekend and busy holiday periods for this reason.

With regards to the tea and coffee facilities in your room, as a full service hotel, we always feel it is better to deliver tea and coffee upon request. Should you prefer a tray in your room, this can be arranged and we will be grateful if you could advise us on booking next time.

Notwithstanding the abovementioned points, I do hope that we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Andrew Stembridge

Our third trip to Chewton this one for my wifes Birthday.
From the first time we came we fell in love with everything about this hotel. The grounds are lovely, leisure facilities excellent, rooms beautifully furnished and quality and attention to detail are evident all around. But the staff are key to the winning formula for me they provide exceptional service without being intrusive and combined with their no tipping policy (apparently included in bill) in makes the whole environment very comfortable to relax in. Our typical break is a one night stay we arrive in the afternoon use the Hydrotherapy pool with numerous massage points and the gym which is well equipped then pre dinner drinks in bar and a lovely meal and wine in restaurant. The following morning after a great breakfast we go for a walk to the beach or last time we took their mountain bikes and went a bit further down the coast. Others hotels and restaurants we have visited may have beaten individual components but as a total package for us this is still our favourite and the one to beat for an overall short break experience in UK. Planning our return.

Room Tip: We have stayed in three different rooms and been kindly upgraded on some visits but based on our exp...
