“Totally amazing spa facilities”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This is without doubt the best spa I have ever visited, within a beautiful hotel with stunning grounds. The spa facilities, treatments, food and staff are all amazing. I wish I didn't have to leave at the end of my latest day there.

Very surprised as we thought this hotel was going to be snooty but it's so not. The staff are incredibly friendly & charming - every single one of them we meet which is unusual in a hotel - nothing is too much trouble. The pools & spa area are relaxing but a bit crowded. We had a nice & very comfortable room (thank you!) with lovely terrace & super comfortable bed. Someone calls you before your stay to find your preferences & all staff seem to know you well - which is highly impressive. Breakfast in the room is fabulous and the food in the restaurant to die for, one of the best things in the hotel!!! We will definitely go back for some more relaxing time perhaps out of season to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the location, and to be pampered by all that wonderful people. Thanks :)

Rooms very dated and tired. My room in the "loft",was I felt very expensive when compared to other rooms at lower levels.Wi-fi was very patchy. Nice linen ,towels etc.
Restaurant very acceptable. The hotel was a 'warren' ,w which is why they provide you with a coloured floor layout plan.

Room Tip: Do not accept a second floor 'loft room'. v/disappointing .

Staying in the tree house, with some girlfriends for a birthday treat, was the most wonderful relaxing experience. Being able to drink champagne in the hot tub, looking out across the treetops was wonderful, and we were picked up in the buggy in our dressing gowns and slippers to go across to the SPA, where we spent a delightful afternoon begin pummeled by the water and swimming in the pool. The whole experience was helped by glorious sunny weather, which meant being able to laze by the pool on the Sunday and swim in the outdoor pool, after a walk down to the beach and a hearty breakfast.
The service was good for most of the stay. However, there was a slowness to the terrace bar service, when we first arrived which was quite surprising, but everything after that was excellent.

Room Tip: The Tree Houses are a different experience. 4 adults stayed in one pod, for one night which was fin...

The hotel is decent but far from outstanding. The welcome at reception is very good - good start sadly most of the staff are not at the the level you would expect at a hotel in this price category - this is no Gidleigh Park and no Hambleton Hall. At times the service was catatonic. Much of the hotel fabric looks a little tired (apart from the original building) and of course the rooms which are of course, very good (given the price - it is the least you would expect). The overriding impression is that the hotel has become too big and the service too impersonal. You feel like you are on a conveyor belt and the hotel is living on its reputation - a cash cow for the hotel group that owns it. The spa - once first class is now looking tired and some the staff appeared disinterested (save those at the reception desks). One other gripe - for a tranquil retreat you would expect the hotel to be located next to a busy and very noisy road (cross it on the way to the beach at your peril!).

Chewton Glen makes for a lovely relaxing stay. My wife and I were here for 2 days, and stayed in one of their tree houses. There is no faulting the tree house option, these are perfect little pods with your own terrace, hot tub, lounge area, large bedroom, 3 TV's and SONOS music system. The spa was ok, but personal I preferred the spa at Lime Wood Hotel in Lyndhurst. The same can be said for the service at Chewton Glen. Whilst it was ok, it was let down a number of times during our evening dinner and breakfast. On both occasions the staff at Chewton Glen let themselves down with poor levels service. At dinner we wanted to know what cheeses were pasteurised, as my wife is pregnant. This involved a great deal of confusion and end up with our cheese course coming out last whilst they were trying to serve the coffees. Then at breakfast, our plates of full English were dropped, and the second serving was cold and over cooked.

Room Tip: If you can always go for a tree house

We stayed for one night, the bedroom was large and spacious and well furnished with a fabulous bath/ shower room and the bed was very comfy although it was very hot at night due to the thick duvet. The corridors to get to the bedrooms did not feel as if they were part of the same hotel, they seemed older and shabbier.

The other public areas in the hotel are nice although we decided not to eat in the hotel as it was a bit more formal than we we looking for on this occasion, the pub a short walk away was fine for what we wanted.

We had drinks later in the bar although we waited for approx 10minutes to be acknowledged, when they came the margarita was awful, poorly made possibly just ice and tequila, I asked for some lime to try and give it some flavour but it did not improve it much and I did not drink it.

We were disappointed by the pool/spa areas, maybe I have been spoilt, but it was quite old and dated and the tiles reminded me (sorry to say this) of a public swimming baths, and could do with renovating, there are also only a dozen or so loungers by the pool area which is not enough for everyone so you end up hovering around until someone leaves. The outside pool was not open when we visited but is a short distance from the spa area.

The hotel is a short 20mins walk to the beach down a small track which is pleasant enough.
On our walk through the grounds we were a offered a view inside one of the" tree houses", these are simply stunning and although away from the main building would be worth the extra money.

Breakfast was good with plenty of choice from the buffet or hot plated if you prefer

A nice touch on departure is the water and biscuits offered by reception. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and professional.
