“Not Grand and Ostentatious, but instead refined luxury”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2010

I booked the hotel as a surprise birthday gift for my wife, and on booking, I had been asked for the purpose of the stay, but had forgotten that..
On arrival, we discovered we had been upgraded to a magnificent large suite overlooking the croquet court, and there was a birthday card and helium balloon waiting for us.
The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful.
The bar and terrace were quite crowded for Sunday lunch, which put us off waiting for food, so we borrowed bicycles and cycled the short trip to the beach, overlooking the Isle of Wight, and found an excellent seafood restaurant.
Then back for 9 holes of golf, and the use of the magnificent pool and spa, Both the par three course and the leisure facilities were almost empty, which we appreciated.
The evening meal was unhurried, the food was excellent and served by chatty engaging staff.
The hotel provided suggestions for walks - one of which we tried the following morning. Fabulous views along the coast.
We both thourougly enjoyed our relaxing break.
Chewton Glen is not grand or ostentatious, but instead a refined luxurious English hotel

So many of our guests come to Chewton Glen to celebrate and we endeavour to make these occasions truly memorable. We are delighted that we achieved this goal and that this reviewer and his wife had a wonderful time.

The 'tea for two experience' that we enjoyed on Sat 11 Sept was a birthday present from my partner. Having lived in the area for 4 years I had never had the opportunity to visit Chewton Glen. However (as I work as brochure production manager of a London based top-class holiday tour operator), I knew of the hotel's excellent reputation and was aware that it is a member of the Relaix des Châteaux. The 'tea for two experience' that can be purchased in a voucher-form sent to the recipient in a beautiful presentation box is a superb treat for anyone looking for a special venue to indulge in the pampered ambience of a luxurious hotel. The service was discreet and professional. The tiny sandwiches and cakes were utterly delicious and, as expected, a choice of teas was available. We did not feel 'rushed' at all and thoroughly made the most of our afternoon. My only 'regret' is that I was not offered a full weekend at Chewton Glen, but the appropriate hints were given! In the meantime, I look forward to treating myself to a lovely treatment at the on-site spa.
Thank you to all concerned (especially the lady in the 'Reservations Department' who did her utmost to accommodate my demanding date request).

It was wonderful to read that these guests enjoyed their ‘tea for two’ experience at Chewton Glen and I am only sorry that it has taken them four years to find a good excuse to come and visit! Needless to say we look forward to welcoming them back much sooner this time and hopefully the reviewer’s wish to come and stay for the entire weekend will come true next time!

This really is as good as it gets - from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave - there are even wellies to borrow if you want to walk in the grounds in the wet.

Food excellent - but they are not particularly quick at removing finshed plates and glasses - and that is probably the only 'moan' - if you can call it that.

Would I sta again - you betcha!

We were delighted that these guests had a wonderful time at Chewton Glen despite the inclement weather. The New Forest can be so beautiful when it rains assuming of course you are dressed appropriately. We have passed their kind words regarding the food onto the kitchen brigade and also the request for prompter plate and glass turnover to the restaurant team. We very much look forward to welcoming these guests back to Chewton Glen hopefully in the not too distant future.

My husband and I stayed at Chewton Glen Hotel an Spa for a couple of days as a special treat. Every aspect of this hotel was simply perfect. Whilst at the high end in terms of price, we left feeling we had received great value and exceptional service.
Chewton Glen is oneof the best hotels we have ever stayed in and compares with the finest establishments in Europe and rest of world. There was no aspect of the hotel we could fault. Being able to walk through the grounds to the local beach was great!
We can't wait until our next visit!

Chewton Glen is a luxurious hotel, in a beautiful setting, with a fantastic spa and amazing staff. You come away feeling truly pampered, having been treated like royalty. Chewton Glen has its fair share of celebrity guests but I can't imagine they are treated any better than we were. It is a very relaxing place to be, with stunning public areas and beautiful grounds. We stayed in the first price Bronze room, but it was enormous and exceptionally comfortable with a small balcony. Even one night was enough to come away feeling rested and relaxed.

Stayed here again after nearly 10 years. I must say the estate was the exact same only this time "the public" was quite "different" compared to last time. The staff was not trained (enough) and did not have heart for the business as they had 10 years ago. For example; during breakfast we got the wrong tea/coffee etc. Can happen. Some cooked breakfast items never reached our table. Can happen too... But do not start blaming your colleagues in front of your guests. Very unprofessional. This happened to us twice. The person who collected our bags was grumpy and just entered our room without knocking. He didn't care. I did. The food in the restaurant was not OK. My main course fish was tasteless and arrived cold. The service was amateurish and definitely not up to par for a 5 star hotel. The (golden) room was everything what you wanted to see on this level; no negatives here. The garden was just as stunning as 10 years ago. Complements for the gardeners. The pools are very nice as is the Spa.

It looks like as if the "success formula" has been squeezed to it's limits; too many guests on the estate and staff is less qualified.

It was disappointing to read that this reviewer felt that certain elements of the Chewton Glen experience were not as good as they were ten years ago and needless to say; we were all saddened by their observations. Our commitment to exceeding the expectations of each and every guest has never been stronger and it is most regretful that this was not consistently evident throughout all of the departments. Under normal circumstances our team at Chewton Glen are praised for their enthusiastic approach and their ability to find a comfortable balance between friendliness and professionalism. We intentionally employ staff based on their personality rather than previous experience and this has led to genuinely hospitable employees unlike those who have been all too often trained to smile insincerely. Needless to say all of the points raised have been passed on to the appropriate departmental managers and they have asked me to convey how sorry they are for this unacceptable lapse in service. August is always a very busy period us however with 240 staff we should have been able to offer exemplary service. As always I would value the opportunity to hear directly from these guests with a view to discussing their stay in more detail.

Chewton Glen remains, in our view, one of the few truly five star hotels in the UK with service and atmosphere to match and is very relaxing compared with lesser hotels that seem to need to have some kind of "pretence" at their status.

In recent years Chewton Glen has become very child friendly which has coincided nicely with our new arrival and our baby daughter was well looked after including a present, snacks and high tea as well as the staff (and other residents) being very happy to see her in all public areas.

Food was excellent as usual and we were able to take the full dinner menu in our suite so we could easily babysit.

We're looking forward for our next excuse to visit!

We were thrilled that this family enjoyed their most recent visit to Chewton Glen and that they particularly appreciated our transition into being a family friendly property. I have enjoyed sharing their comments with the whole team who will undoubtedly be motivated by this review. We look forward to welcoming these guests back to Chewton Glen in the not too distant future.
