Upon arrival our initial impression was a lovely building - in a lovely peaceful setting. We looked forward to a stay when we would be able to feel that we were staying with friends, or as part of a small country house weekend party and this was to an extent achieved.
Sadly the actual experience was a bit of a let-down. We were upgraded to a 'superior' room again our initial impression was good. However it turned out to have a cracked bath panel and an uncomfortable bed whose headboard banged against the wall.
We chose this hotel also because of the reputation of the restaurant. We expected prices to be high, but also that quality and style would reflect this. Again initial impressions were good: the olives and bread were pleasant, when the amuse-bouche arrived it was excellent and our anticipation rose for the rest of the meal. Sadly however the first course was in my case slightly cold and the main course for both of us was also served at best warm. Both mains were accompanied by overpoweringly sweet sauces. The wine list was also expensive. Having recently eaten at a similar establishment in Oxford (the Old Parsonage) the food was a real disappointment. Breakfast, included in the cost of room, was also a little disappointing with very small servings and limited range of fruit and juices (un-chilled). Service from the staff in reception, at dinner and for breakfast was however very good - all of them had a smile and pleasant word for us.
In summary if one were staying with friends or at a country house party then the food and the room would have been acceptable. However this is not a cheap hotel and the restaurant was a sad disappointment and the room left something to be desired. One was left with an overall impression of corners being cut in the room, and cheeseparing in the restaurant. A real pity.

Thank you for your very kind comments about the staff and the excellent and cheerful service they gave you. Everyone here works incredibly hard to make sure that guests have the best possible time and it is lovely when guests comment on this. As I have already said in my reply to you under another medium, we are very sorry that the dinner was not to your taste. We have, however, just won the BEST RESTAURANT AWARD for Petersfield for the second year running and were inspected last night by 2 AA inspectors, and have maintained our 2 AA Rosette standard. This is no mean feat.

I have lunch at the hotel about once a month - the food is fabulous, always creative and beautifully cooked. If you stay in the hotel, make sure you eat in the restaurant, if you live locally you should go to one of their many events or just go for lunch or dinner, a real treat and perfect for birthdays, mother's day etc. etc.

Absolutely loved my stay here. We stayed in the 'cottage' room, I think. The room theme was rustic. It was painted white and had some lovely decorations. The hotel is situated in the Downs. There are some lovely fields surrounding the hotel and there are some little chicken hutches in the hotel garden which are nice to look at.

We had the inclusive breakfast the following morning. There was a nice selection of yogurt, cereal, juices and a choice of cooked breakfast.

I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed one night at the Langrish House in Petersfield because we wanted to visit the town of Chawton where the Jane Austen House and the Chawton Library are located. We didn't want to stay too close to Chawton since it can be highly traveled, so we selected the Langrish House because it was nearby yet quiet.

We were greeted by friendly staff and a very clean room with a beautiful view. The grounds are exactly what one would hope for in the English Countryside. We had tea in the afternoon and a charming conversation with some locals. We ate in their restaurant for dinner and had a relaxing and romantic meal. The chef was also very attentive to my various food allergies and made great alternative menu choices to accommodate me.

The room was spacious and beautiful. We had a 'king' sized bed with two mattresses pushed together - which was the only part I would have changed if I owned the place. Overall, it was a beautiful stay and a great price for the value of the experience. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!

Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much. We are so lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world and see the views that Jane Austen herself would have enjoyed! We do hope you will be back again soon.

We stayed over a sunny weekend luckily, I say luckily as we would have been a bit stuck for what to do with ourselves if we couldn't have sat out in the garden. The grounds are very nice, not huge but pretty boarders and lovely lawns, could have done with a few more benches etc. to sit on - just one set at the front plus a bench and one set at the back, if others were on them already you're on the grass. Facilities wise there's just a small sitting room, very small dining room for meals or your bedroom. We didn't find the bedroom a particularly nice place to be so spent most of our time in the grounds when not dining.
We fancied a drink before dinner so went down to the bar in the vaults and rang the bell as directed but no-one came after 2 attempts so went back up and rang the bell at reception - there's no staff around to catch the eye of, you're very much left to your own devices which can sometimes be a good thing but here felt more like no-one was around and all the fun (and staff ... and noise) was going on behind the doors marked "private" like in a parallel world it was so chalk and cheese.
Food I would say would be very pricey if you haven't got a meal deal type package - eg. breakfast £14.95, cheese board £9.65 and lager £7 a pint equivalent. The quality was ok, but not fantastic and didn't warrant the high prices, to be honest though a tagine with "prune emulation" isn't really our thing so maybe not fair to judge.
I think its a strange mix as the house and grounds are quite grand, there's great potential here, but the food was a bit pretentious and the service and quality of the bedroom let it down badly in our opinion.
I'm afraid I wouldn't stay here again but the location is really lovely so would visit the area, and definitely Winchester again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 12 which was in the eaves, small room although the bathroom was a good size ( as l...

Dear Sally, Our grounds are indeed wonderful and we are very lucky. Now the weather is warmer we have lots of seats and tables out for people to enjoy. We make no pretences, we are a private family house conversion into a hotel. We are not a chain. Staying here is meant to be like staying with friends. Luckily lots of people really love the homeliness, the warmth, the quirkiness and the individuality of what we offer. Variety is the spice of life. It is also true that fine dining does not suit everyone. It would be a shame for a small, intimate restaurant in a stunning location to be serving the sort of food you could get at a pub.

We were enroute to Gatwick airport and because 'she who must be obeyed' doesn't like motorways (and has a pretty weak bladder), we were on the secondary roads. Needs must and the instruction was, 'Find me a loo.'
The first exit led me to the rather imposing Langrish House, and whilst I thought it was a liberty just using their loo, we elected to have a coffee. We were offered freshly baked biscuits with coffee. We accepted and waited for about 15 minutes. The coffee came and was delicious. Then the biscuits came. Only one largish one each, but straight from the oven and pure heaven.
Do yourself a favour and stop off, even if it is just for a coffee and biscuit. £4.95 each, but excellent value for money

Room Tip: Good place for a refreshing break to a journey

My partner and I stayed on the 7 & 8th March for my Birthday, on a deal. We loved the setting in a lovely old historical family house and grounds (where the owners still live). The staff were welcoming, warm and friendly, without the normal robotic fake bon ami that somehow passes for 'good service' in some establishments. The family were also there and not distant.

We arrived late, but were not made to feel uncomfortable and ate in the restaurant, which was excellent. The meal was expensive, but every mouthful was a pleasure. Breakfast was also great, a little disorganised at times, but this was more than made up for by the friendly and helpful nature of the staff. This generally positive attitude from the staff says alot about the place, as does the quality of the chefs, and the comments made by the owners on here which have sought to defend their staff on occasion. The fact that they can be bothered to respond to so many comments here shows how much they care about their business.

The room, as with much of the rest of the place, was steeped in history. Dated perhaps, but not in a bad way, and clean, while our bathroom was modern. We also had a great view.

Reading through some of the other reviews, not everything is perfect, and this place is clearly not for everyone. But, if you want to, you can always find fault, and it is how you feel about and deal with such imperfections that will make a difference to your stay here. With fault comes character. Perhaps sometimes people should try to look beyond surface imperfections to the real personality of a place, with all that entails. Otherwise we may just end up with a country just full of 'perfect' but bland corporate hotels, with little character, served by overly friendly but underwhelming staff, as is increasingly happening to the shops on our high streets.

Thank you for your lovely review and more importantly for appreciating what we are: a family owned, private house hotel. We are not a chain! We are delighted you enjoyed the food so much. Our chefs are very talented and passionate about what they do. We have a terrific and hard working team. We do not pretend to be a slick modern hotel. We DO care a lot about our guests and giving them pleasure is our greatest reward. We hope to welcome you back 'ere long
