“A country house experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2014

We stayed here for a night to celebrate a birthday, which turned out to be a mixed experience. Our stay here was preceded by a previous visit when we turned up to find that our online reservation, which had been confirmed, was in the hotel diary for a different date, and we had to go home again as the hotel was full. This review is submitted because the owners are frequently asked to consider views about their hotel needing an upgrade but they appear to have done nothing about this.

The decor in the room we were allocated when we finally made it was 'tired', and there were definitely odours coming from the kitchens. Since many of the hotel reviews are positive we perhaps were just unlucky but the hotel was full, so we were told they were unable to change our room. The view of the garden was attractive however we were only there overnight so this wasn't as important as the room itself. Our hard bed was uncomfortable, bath towels not very big and while the bathroom was reasonable with plenty of hot water, it was not as spotless as we would have wished, mouldy grout along the bath and the floor not clean.

Previous reviewers have mentioned the smell in the corridors, with which we both agreed, and in general how run down much of the hotel appears. Since it is apparently often full, might it be a good idea for the owners to spend some of their profits on painting, decorating and gradually updating what is a very tired-looking establishment?

Our main concern was that in spite of arriving downstairs for dinner at eight, the time we had reserved our table, we waited nearly ten minutes to order, then a further half an hour for our starter to arrive. During that time our waitress, who was rushed off her feet, brought rolls and butter and did apologise but it was late when our meal actually began, with the result that our main courses were rather dry and seemed to have been reheated. Dessert choice was limited by the time this was eventually served. We should perhaps have complained earlier but with the restaurant full what else could the staff do?

Breakfast was better, quite enjoyable after the night before, but overall we would probably not choose to stay here again. Sorry to have to say so to the owners, who from their responses to criticism and complaints really do care, but a lick of paint, some new curtains and mattresses, checking out the bathrooms with a critical eye, and a good deep cleaning of all the carpets and soft furnishings would cost little and greatly improve this pretty place. Can we gently suggest the owners go to see establishments which charge similar prices to get a feel for what the competition is offering your potential customers.

Room Tip: We wanted to change our room but the hotel was full so cannot comment on this.

Dear Maxigriff! You are quite right, the owners do care – very much. The trouble with ‘anonymous’ reviews is that it is impossible to pinpoint precisely when you came, which room you were in, or which staff were on duty and it is therefore quite impossible to deal with any problems. We see you stayed in October 2013. It is now late February 2014!! It really is essential to mention when you are not happy at the time when something may be done to rectify things. Four months later is not so easy!

In these recessionary times, there are few profits! The hotel had a great deal of refurbishment in January. A small army of maintenance men, two (and sometimes three) painters were here for the 10 days we were closed. We have also had a lot of new arm chairs in the bedrooms. We are delighted with them. Beds are, of course, a personal matter but those that complete our Guest Satisfaction Forms invariably grade them as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’. I am sorry you found yours hard.

Our 3 Chefs (new since September) have a Michelin Star background. They are receiving huge praise for their food, which gives us all great pleasure.

The cause of the very occasional odour in the corridors was found in the autumn. There is not a problem now.

We see that you have given excellent reviews to a pub in Petworth and a Wetherspoons in Ripon. We are very different and we make no apology for being a small, historic country house! We are not ‘modern’. We are a Victorian family home and unique which is exactly why so many of our guests love Langrish and return over and over again.

It was a special occasion for me on the 13th so a treat for myself and my good wife, we had afternoon tea on arrival after a trying drive to the Langrish, it was simply wonderful, my favourite was the smoked salmon sandwich and scones - just some yummy. Our evening meal was excellent even though we were well fed from the afternoon tea. I cant fault the food or the service 1st class together with the hotel being full of character as a family home thats lived in above all dont expect a modern top hotel the Langrish is just full of nature charm reflected in the family pictures dotted around the house our room was simply great and very comfy. I highly recommend this hotel for its food and service plus accomodation.

My Husband and I stayed here last year at this time, we enjoyed it so much we decided to return again this Christmas for a night away before the Christmas nightmare!!
We had such a lovely stay, the staff were very professional and welcoming, The room was lovely it was called the Hideaway it is used as the bridle suite, I can see why, it is enchanting with stars on the ceiling when the room is dark.
The food was first class, it was lovely last time but even better this time, we were informed that they have a new head chef who has Michelin star background, you can tell this in the quality of the food.
Thank you all for a lovely stay hope to come again later this year,

A very friendly and efficient welcome from the receptionist (George) who showed us to our rooms and organised afternoon tea for us - there were three of us - in a quiet corner.
The evening meal was excellent, the venison was to die for.
The beds were very comfortable and the rooms spacious. The bathrooms appeared to have been recently upgraded and were sparkling clean.
The jar of homemade cookies was most appreciated!!
The next day we were greeted on our departure by the owners who were speaking to all guests on their departure.
The Office Manager (Mrs Keeping) was the epitome of quiet efficiency and was most helpful.
Overall an enjoyable experience and one that we would not hesitate to repeat, perhaps next time for a few days.

Room Tip: No 19 is a super room, No 17 is also very comfortable. Both rooms are very spacious.

Langrish is an old-fashioned country house which provides a lovely destination for a long walk through the stunning Hampshire countryside. Unlike other old hotels, Langrish offers a warm atmosphere, comfortable rooms, soft beds and clean modern bathrooms. We had dinner in the restaurant and enjoyed the South Downs venison and pheasant dishes.

My cousin had her wedding reception/evening function here. Very peaceful setting and the house is stunning, the dungeons are a little odd...expected most haunted to pop out at any moment.
There were 80 of us and food arrived in good time and hot, tasting brilliant! Portion sizes could be bigger but I eat double size of most adults! Staff were very helpful, had a laugh and a joke with waiting staff!
All in all very good venue for a wedding

We are so pleased you enjoyed the wedding so much and that you thought the food was so good! We love Weddings here at Langrish House and there is something very special about December weddings! The 'dungeons' have a long and fascinating history! We don't think they are haunted!

For my 40th birthday my wife and I were treated to a night at Langrish House and it is one of the nicest places we've ever stayed.

The room was clean with stunning views over the surrounding countryside and woodland.

The food was outstanding and we were even served additional treats before our starter. All three courses, for which there was plenty of choice, were excellent and the staff went out of their way to make sure everything was to our liking. Customer-wise too for a Sunday night the dining room was full - testament to a restaurant with a great reputation. I'd also like to mention the wine list which was brilliant - we don't often treat ourselves to quality wine but the 2009 Chateau Des Gravieres was amazing.

Frankly I was stunned by smuckingfart's comment below - TBH with a handle like smuckingfart I'm not sure I care about their opinion on food anyway but it seems a little unfair that they can sway the Tripadviser opinion-o-meter based on nonsense.

Langrish House is a beautiful place for a break away and my wife and I will certainly return again in the future.
