We stayed here for a night to celebrate a birthday, which turned out to be a mixed experience. Our stay here was preceded by a previous visit when we turned up to find that our online reservation, which had been confirmed, was in the hotel diary for a different date, and we had to go home again as the hotel was full. This review is submitted because the owners are frequently asked to consider views about their hotel needing an upgrade but they appear to have done nothing about this.
The decor in the room we were allocated when we finally made it was 'tired', and there were definitely odours coming from the kitchens. Since many of the hotel reviews are positive we perhaps were just unlucky but the hotel was full, so we were told they were unable to change our room. The view of the garden was attractive however we were only there overnight so this wasn't as important as the room itself. Our hard bed was uncomfortable, bath towels not very big and while the bathroom was reasonable with plenty of hot water, it was not as spotless as we would have wished, mouldy grout along the bath and the floor not clean.
Previous reviewers have mentioned the smell in the corridors, with which we both agreed, and in general how run down much of the hotel appears. Since it is apparently often full, might it be a good idea for the owners to spend some of their profits on painting, decorating and gradually updating what is a very tired-looking establishment?
Our main concern was that in spite of arriving downstairs for dinner at eight, the time we had reserved our table, we waited nearly ten minutes to order, then a further half an hour for our starter to arrive. During that time our waitress, who was rushed off her feet, brought rolls and butter and did apologise but it was late when our meal actually began, with the result that our main courses were rather dry and seemed to have been reheated. Dessert choice was limited by the time this was eventually served. We should perhaps have complained earlier but with the restaurant full what else could the staff do?
Breakfast was better, quite enjoyable after the night before, but overall we would probably not choose to stay here again. Sorry to have to say so to the owners, who from their responses to criticism and complaints really do care, but a lick of paint, some new curtains and mattresses, checking out the bathrooms with a critical eye, and a good deep cleaning of all the carpets and soft furnishings would cost little and greatly improve this pretty place. Can we gently suggest the owners go to see establishments which charge similar prices to get a feel for what the competition is offering your potential customers.
