“Quintessential English Charm”

If you are after a clinically slick city hotel where no one talks to you, this is not the place for you. However, if you are after a haven
to de-stress, feel pampered and thaw out, you just found it!

Langrish House has unrivaled views, charming rooms and a terrific cooked breakfast. The owner, Robina, is a delightfully kind and interesting lady who beguiled me with stories of a recent Royal visit
to the Hotel, a resident chicken turned unexpected hero, and the fact
that Langrish was her ancestoral home which was sold and which she purchased back.

It is quintessentially English, everything I love about the UK.

We stayed at Langrish House recently for a wedding that was held there for friends. We had a great time. The staff were helpful, the food excellant and we had a wonderful time.

If you want to have a wedding here or a stay overnight them give them a call it is well worth it.

Went here for a wedding. Stayed at hotel. I have to say camping would have been a better alternative. This hotel stands for everything I hate about staying in the UK. The room was extremely tired, decoration sparse and richerty. The bathroom would be more suited to a scene from George and Mildred. The staff were teenagers and didn't seem to know if they were coming or going. We did not have the a la carte food as we were at a wedding, but if you are thinking of having a wedding here... don't. Breakfast was traditional cooked, but with really poor ingrediants and was generally unpleasent. The outside of the Hotel is lovely, but the contrast between outside and in is just so evident. They need to spend some serious cash in ungrading the inside especially the bedrooms and employing some knowledgable staff etc. There is no way in a million years I would stay here again.

On arrival we found the hotel exterior promising, a nice old country house style with chickens and other birds on the lawns, on entering the hotel reception area it looked very tired and in need of some TLC.

We were shown to our room No 6 which was tiny and tatty with burn holes in lampshades, the bathroom is something else! definite 70's decor with formica surfaces in a faux tile effect and no shower just a marked bath. We requested another room with a shower and were given a far superior room No 5, which was in need of a good clean and service throughout. The furniture was very dusty and there was a problem with the twin beds which were pushed together, as one was much lower at the head board than the feet. On checking if there was a caster missing we found a £10 note underneath the valance (another sign of the lack of thorough cleaning). There were also previous guests hairs in the bathroom, which I found quite disgusting, especially as the the check-in time is 3.30pm and check out 10.30am leaving plenty of time to service the rooms I would have thought.

The evening meal was very good, the food was of a good quality and presented and cooked well. The breakfast was ok, and the breakfast staff seemed more interested in his own tiredness and aching back than anything else. I was disappointed that the breakfast finished a 9.30 on the bank holiday monday and not 10 as on a sunday.

Generally the hotel looks as if it needs some investment in refurbishment, I understand it is a country house hotel and therefor can get away with being quirky but this seemed to be beyond that. Also a few more staff maybe would help the situation as they all seemed to be multi tasking a little too much! and to the detrement of the service.

  • Disliked — lack of cleanliness!

Stayed on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast deal with a friend in another room, which in retrospect was dissappointing value considering there were only three of us. The rooms were all musty with many flies, and the place was interminably hot. None of the staff seemed to know what they were doing, and the simplest requests (drinks, towels, food preferences etc) were met with the utmost chaos, and the highest prices I've seen for such an establishment. The dinner itself was insubstantial and pretentiously pompous, although served wonderfully with great charm by a waiter named Tino. Halfway through my main course some twittery woman introduced herself as the owner and proceeded to waste around 15 minutes of our time with idle chit-chat. This may be their hotel, but we certainly didn't pay such a huge sum of money for a cold dinner and conversation with some hotelier, and our lack of enthusiasm at this unrequested interfereance was pointedly ignored as we answered question afetr question of where we came from, what we do and where we were going.

In short I wish I had gone to a generic hotel instead for better value, service, food, accommodation and all in all more atmosphere then some decrepid building can provide. People make a place, not chickens.

I am surprised that no one has sent in a review for the Langrish House hotel before. It is listed in Johansens and won the Les Routiers Hotel of the Year 2005 award for the UK. It also seems to have consistently been awarded an AA rosette for good food for the last few years.

This is a family owned hotel (the house dates from the mid 17th century and has been in the same family for 7 generations) situated between Petersfield and Winchester in Hampshire. It has 13 bedrooms and is rated 2-star, but is elegantly furnished and has lovely grounds - the brochure states that it is set in 14 acres including a lake, but some of the grounds appear to be off-limit to guests and we did not manage to discover the lake.

We stayed for one night in April in the "Hideaway suite", which is tucked around the back of the hotel (access is through a gate marked "staff only"!). For us, this had the advantage of having it's own private entrance, as we were travelling with our dog (the hotel welcomes pets) and thus had the possibility of taking him out for nocturnal sanitary expeditions without disturbing anyone (or setting off any alarms).

The dinner and breakfast were excellent. A limited choice of table d'hote menu but beautifully cooked and presented. They say that they try and source ingredients locally - we saw chickens and guinea-fowl in the grounds, so I guess the eggs at breafast were really fresh, and I noted guinea-fowl on the evening menu!

No lift but there are ground-floor bedrooms and there was one guest in a wheel-chair, so accessibility issues seems to have been taken care of - however they wouldn't have been able to explore one of the very individual features of Langrish House, which is a veritable warren of underground chambers (excavated during the English Civil War) which now serve as sitting and dining areas (there is an additional dining room on the ground floor).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel, albeit with some small cautionary notes. In the Hideaway suite, the bathroom is rather small and the bath might be a bit narrow for guest of large bulk. It is an attic room with two roof-lights - these had roller blinds made of white fabric so that as soon as it got light in the morning, so did the room: didn't bother us, but it might some people. One of the wooden chairs was a bit worn and rickety. Also some evidence of management not keeping their eye on the ball - a bag of cleaners' stuff left in our bedroom and flowers on our dinner table well past their best (but fine and fresh on other tables).
