“Just Lovely”
Reviewed 24 March 2010

Following a recommendation from a colleague, we booked the Mortimer Arms as the venue for our wedding reception. At all times the staff were helpful and knowledgeable with nothing being too much trouble. The function room was perfect for our evening do with a great atmosphere. Although we didn't get round to eating anything, our guests were very complimentary about the hot food buffet - it certainly smelt good. We spent the night in one of the four poster rooms which really was perfect and good value inclusive of breakfast. Mortimers made our special day everything we hoped it would be and we would whole heartedly recommend it.

I stayed at the Mortimer Arms with friends this weekend as we enjoyed a weekend at the coast exploring Southampton and Bournemouth, I had heard mixed reviews previously but upon arrival I was greeted by the new manager who could not have been more helpful. What a charming, knowledgable and clearly capable individual. Food was fabulous the service great with some bad patches that were quickly acknowledged and acted upon. Pleasant hotel with good size rooms and a lovely atmosphere in the bar area. The recent addition to the bar staff was clearly capable of keeping her locals in check.

We had visited the Mortimer Arms on a few occasions while in the area for coffee and biscuits, lunch, etc. We had found it attractive with helpful and polite staff and the service and food had always been very good.

When we had to spend time in the area, we naturally decided to try the accommodation. We had expected a reasonable standard of room, but we had a very pleasant surprise! The room we were given, (the last room available), was lovely! It was spotlessly clean, light and airy, quite spacious with a very comfortable bed, nicely appointed with TV, Freeview, DVD player, coffee and tea making facilities and bottled water. The bathroom was a good size with a bath and a powerful over-the-bath shower. Overall, I have stayed in many other supposedly higher rated hotels, but this was far nicer than most of them.

We went to the bar for a pre-dinner drink and we were offered a restaurant table or we could stay in the bar, the menu was the same. As inviting as the restaurant looked, we opted to remain at our window table in the bar. Service was excellent, polite and efficient, the wine was reasonably priced and the food was excellent!!!

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for business or pleasure, as it's a easily accessible from the M27 and A36 and provides a good base for exploring the New Forest or the coast.

We have today been to the Mortimer Arms to celebrate Mother's Day early. We were a fairly large party but we were all treated as individuals. The food was excellent. No-one had any negative comments to make. The staff were so very helpful and friendly. They could not do enough for anyone that was there, whether in our party or other guests. We will certainly be going again and will be telling all our friends. Sometimes things happen that our beyond the control of anyone. Patience and understanding goes a long way. We will be back and hopefully for longer next time. Keep up the high standards that you have. Mrs. Galloway

My boyfriend booked one night stay at the Mortimer Arms, Romsey for Valentine's day. We checked in fine and reserved a table for dinner that night, the restaurant was full, but we got a table in the bar, which was still nice.

During our first mouthful of the starter, the fire alarm went off. We sat there wondering if we should get up, no member of staff came over to say anything about it, so we just tried to carry on. After 5 long minutes, it went off. This happened FIVE times during the course of our meal and to be honest it was so disrupting, it was a bit difficult to be romantic with a loud ringing in your ears! A member of staff did eventually come over and explained it was being sensitive.
We saw about 6 people leave because of the fire alarm, to be honest if we weren't staying the night, we probably would have too.

After going to bed about midnight, we were woken up to a rowdy bunch of drunks in the hallway. There are only a small number of rooms, so you can hear everything. The situation got really intense in the hallway, when two men out of the group started arguing and threatening each other to have a fight. My boyfriend and I didn't know what to do. We called downstairs to reception, but there was no answer.

After other people within the group in the hallway intervened, it all went quiet at about 2:45am. Until 4am, when the fire alarm went off AGAIN!!! People were coming out of their rooms, not knowing if this was the real thing or another sensitive moment. A few people went downstairs to look for a member of staff or the manager, no one could be found, all the rooms were locked, besides the front door. After about 15 minutes of the alarm going off and no sign of any staff, some people packed their bags and left! some people were dressed outside waiting in freezing night. After 30 minutes of the alarm going and still no sign of any help. My boyfriend and I packed our bags and decided we would call the police. We left our room, went downstairs to find that the fire brigade had arrived. They had to break into where the front desk is, which set the burglar alarm off, now we have two sirens going off!! We spoke to another couple there, they said that they saw the manager before going to bed and they said he was pi88ed as a fart.

At 5am we left the Mortimer Arms to start our 2 hour drive home! Still NO sign of the Manager or any staff and the ALARM still ringing!!

We are a well travelled coupled in our late twenties and have stayed from luxury hotels to hostels around the world. I can honestly say this was the WORST hotel I have ever stayed in.

Surely this hotel has broken many health and safety rules and regulations. Don't risk you or your families lives, by staying at this incompetent hotel.

I have used the Mortimer Arms for business trips to the area for a number of years finding it well placed for all major routes and centres in the region.I have always found the food to be excellent, and the rooms both tasteful and very comfortable. The atmosphere in the bar and restaurant have always been pleasant and relaxing .The menu offers a wide choice for all tastes - the same can be said of the beers behind the bar. Staff have maintained high levels of customer service together with the personal touch.I have always enjoyed my stays and look forward to future ones. I have promised my wife that we will stay there for a family break and feel an autumn/winter break beckoning.
