The water gardens are amazing. We'd seen how they looked in Spring on Waitrose TV and they were equally stunning in the flesh in August. We walked round twice to see things from different perspectives and the photos will take a long time to edit!

This is really worth a visit for all us horticulturalists and garden lovers. Whilst restricted opening times, it is well worth visiting along with their sister garden nurseries, a mile up the road with lots of the less common varieties of plants.

If you can find these gardens open or get notification that they have an open day - selected Sundays then take the opportunity to visit. We were not disappointed and will go again.

Part of the John Lewis Group the opening days are allocated to preferred local charities who provide staff and assistance within a well oiled rota. More than adequate, supervised parking adjacent to the specialist nursery where you may find some unusual finds for the garden.

The gardens themselves are based around a running chalk stream, part of ther River Test but formed into a series of lakes with some enormous Koi carp and set amongst tranquil well laid out gardens and great photographic opportunities. The refreshments aren't bad either.

There is annually a plant fair with accompanying beer tent, jazz band and plenty of things for the kids to do. Take your wellies and waterproofs for if the weather is inclement then there is no shelter, however, if the day is fine then it is a dream.

The John Lewis water gardens at Longstock near Stockbridge in Hampshire is probably the best water garden in Britain and for all i know in Europe. it is not open every day and when it is open (for local charities) it is must to visit. Do also go to the Jonn Lewis nursery nearby which is full of good plants and the home to the largest pot plants such as olives that i have ever seen

We have visited these gardens a number of times in different months, so this was the last time in the year it's open to the public for charity in September. The tall hedges hide the astonishing collection of lakes and islands that you see when first entering. Late in the season the plants are starting to fade and the leaves change, but there is still plenty of colorful perennials and a number of water lilies still in bloom. The main lake is fed by a leat from the river Test and a return is made from a lower pond. The water level is kept fairly constant and supports a range of fish including some large Koy. It is kept in excellent condition and always draws a a lot of visitors on open days, but the tea room is about a mile at the nursery. This is also worth a visit to see the ornamental borders and the national collection of Budleia and they sell a very wide variety of plants.
