Longstock Water Gardens

OPen every 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Costs £6.00 each to get in, no concessions, worth every penny. We got there about 14.30, the car park was packed! Once inside you find your own way round. The gardens are simply stunning, lots of water and unusual plants.

Would I go again, definitely yes!

Our third visit to the Longstock Water Gardens was on a very hot Sunday with temperatures to equal the Mediterranean. Now that we are older, we'd love more seats to sit, rest our legs and reflect on this paradise. The very few seats were all occupied. It's a private garden with restricted access, but now very popular with lots of visitors when it is open, many of them elderly. So we couldn't stay as long as we would have wished.

If you visit the web site www.longstockpark.co.uk you can read the history of the gardens and the developments made to the already existing water gardens by John Lewis and his butler/head water gardener.

We loved the hostas, the day lilies, the astilbes and the water lilies and much much more. There were some colourful reflections on the water, mirroring the waterside plants. I was glad to see that the hostas demonstrated that I'm not the only gardener with slugs and snails!

It's lovely wandering around the lakes and over the little bridges to the islands. There's plenty of shade beneath the trees and the flower beds are immaculate, neatly dressed with a black mulch, made on the Leckford (John Lewis) Estate. (We know that because we once had a tour of some of the farms)

The garden, which is opened on the first and third Sunday of each month for charity, was benefitting Southampton Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research at a cost of £6 for adults and £2 for children. There is adequate parking in the orchard opposite the gardens, well stewarded by volunteers. The garden has restricted openings because it is fragile. There are few designated paths and the grass has to recover from being walked on.

All details about opening times are on the web site.

This was our second visit to Longstock and it was as lovely as we remembered. Excellent value at £5, which all goes to whichever charity the garden is open in aid of that weekend. Pity the garden is only open twice a month and only for a few months.

Was lucky enough to be a guest of a John Lewis partner to visit the gardens when no one else was there....what an amazing place. Better than Giverny or any other water gardens I've seen. You can ony access the gardens publicly on certain charity open days - look them up, you wont be disappointed!
