“To be avoided”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2009

The room in the annexe was like a dark dungeon with an unmade bed, overflowing wastebin, dirty towels on bathroom floor and a standard lamp with no bulb and no lampshade. 'Housekeeping' were sent to service the room and 20 minutes later she had gone and the bed had been made, 'clean' towels put in the bathroom but the bathroom hadn't even been cleaned. The floor looked as though it hadn't been cleaned for months. We decided to check out rather than spend a night there and were offered another room but were told it was of a similar standard so we declined. Our first - and last experience of and Old English Inn.

We only stayed one night in this grubby, badly run, badly maintained disgrace to the title "Old English Inns". This place lets down Stockbridge, Greene King and our country, the sooner it is closed the better.

This hotel is very much trading on its history as a sporting hotel. Everything reeks of decay and years of neglect. Carpets and furniture is threadbare with peeling paintwork. Outside our window was a flat roof that had had a leaking pipe for sometime such that it resembled a marsh with knee-high weeds. On top of our four poster bed was a layer of dust at least 2 inches thick. So depressing that this place has been left to decline so much with the minimum amount spend on it. This is just so typical of hotels that have now become part of a chain (Old English Inns, part of Greene King) which seem to be just run for cash by accountants than anyone who has a real passion for hotel-keeping.

We avoided a starter as just none really grabbed us: who would be with names like "Chicken Glory" where almost every dish carried the adjective "quality": it felt more like Aldi than a "quality" restaurant which it was pertaining to be. My main course was so salty, it was inedible and had to be sent back to be replaced with Ham and Chips, another "quality" dish. One only got vegetables if asked for, which my pregant wife only found out afetrwards. The staff were all very pleasant but really not knowledgable at all, confusing red cabbage for beetroot, for instance: they are all very young and no doubt earn very little: another example of cost control rather than an emphasis on service.

Not least forgetting, the same music piped into the bar, resataurant and our bedroom until late at night. When the management were told the next morning on checking out in response to being asked "whether we had enjoyed our stay?", we were told the noise was much worse when there were weddings: not one hint of an apology so even management don't get it.

All very depressing and disapponiting: please avoid at all costs!

Nice position in centre of lovely Stockbridge. Very good dinner b and b rate, so did not know what to expect. Easy parking, very quick check in ..... then the room!
All the characteristics of a neglected hotel room - damp/mould/holes in the ceiling, mouldy grout in bathroom, dust in all the usual places!
Restaurant was nice, however, a bit short staffed, but food choice and quality was good.
Not bad value for the money, but I do wish they would attend to the 'bad bits' !

Room tired just about clean with a bathroom which had unsafe light fittings, mould, and cracked tiles.Only had breakfast where the service was slow to say the least and the food apart from the egg ,cold and of poor quality. The hotel gives the impression of having seen better days and neglected by the present owners Greene King.

The reviews I feel are a little unfair. Yes the hotel is old and the decor reflects this. If you want a modern hotel then don't stay at this one.

Having read the reviews we went along to have a look at the rooms frist and felts they were more the adequate.

Our room was clean, the sheets were lovely fresh white cotton. Towels were clean.

We dined in the restaurant and the meal was excellent especially if you like game. I had venison wellington and it was delicious. We saved a huge amount of money by booking BB and Evening Meal. We paid £15pp and our bill for food would have cost in exccss of £45.

Breakfast had plenty to choose from and ours was fine.

Staff were friendly and helpful although there could have been more of them about when we came to pay the bill!

This is not a luxery hotel but if you like tradition - the hotel was owned some years ago by Lester Piggot's Great Grandfather so there were plenty of horsy pics about. Also fly fishing is popular in this area and again lots of fishy pics about. I say give it a try.

I've stayed here manytimes in the last two years.......and for the last year I've seen it slide slowly into a terrible state. Food is ussually pretty good though.

Rooms are tired looking, grubby, often dirty.....sheets are awful, feel like 100% nylon...certainly very little cotton content.

Matresses range from rock solid to 'well used' and saggy in the middle.

Bathrooms are always dirty, grouting is grubby and often tiles missing.

It simply needs money spent on it, and being the only large hotel in the area, should and could be something special. Just seems IPA aren't prepared to spend any money on it. Current management, although new so can't be too hard on them, seem a little inexperienced and haven't really taken hold of the hotel yet.

Best thing about the hotel is the lovely bar staff / waitress's, all very happy, positive and provide great customer service.

Go for a meal or pint...but dont stay there!

Highfield Country Guesthouse up the road is far superior.

  • Liked — friendly bar staff
  • Disliked — bedroom was uncomfortable and felt grubby!
