“Very nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2010

Since I have read some very negative reviews about the Grosvenor Hotel I was a bit worried to go there for even one night. However, surprise surprise we found the general standard of the Hotel very good. The rooms were well presented and clean, the breakfast was very good and the service when we arrived at the reception was friendly and informative.

All in all a very enjoyable stay.

Room was fine; location good; breakfast was OK, evening meal we had to wait for an hour after ordering to be served, were interested to get your drinks but not the food, mushroom and garlic soup was like dishwater, our main meals were rubbish, coffee was great. Gave total bill, I requested itemised as more than we had calculated and yes they had added someone else's desserts to our bill, on checking out the adjustment had not been done and they kept our receipts and manually wrote the correct amount on our bill. We dined out the second evening and had a wonderful meal across the road.

The hotel was incredibly helpful about allowing us to check in early so that we could change to get to a family wedding early in the afternoon. Our room was small and the lighting was poor but my daughters kindly let me use their very light and huge room to apply my make-up!

Generally, everything was perfectly adequate for our purposes, although the breakfast wasn't entirely delicious. However I was less than thrilled to find that I had been overcharged, probably a simple error in adding the two room bills, and when I called to ask for the overcharge to be refunded, the manager was very offhand and utterly unapologetic about it. So, if you do stay there, check your bill carefully!

read the reviews. I have never stayed in such a poo hole in my life. badly run, crap service, no hotwater, dusty, grumpy staff, over priced. Generally a shambles.

Apart from that its fabulous.

The manager paul is a very grumpy man and his customer service skills stink.

We thought we would have a trip to the picturesque village of Stockbridge and have afternoon tea. The Grosvenor looked good from the outside so went in. Bad mistake.
Afternoon tea was served in the bar. We asked about a selection of cakes and were given the choice of one. When it arrived the slice hardly covered the plate.
My friend remarked that either the hotel was comfortably shabby or shabby. Decorations had recently been put up and there were remnants of them under the bar which looked dusty and dingy. The bar was fine for a drink but afternoon tea in a hotel which has a prime position in the village? It was a complete non experience.
I also seriously question hygiene after witnessing one of the catering staff visiting the toilet.
Management please pull your socks up you are letting this beautiful village down badly.

Stockbridge is a strange place; a single 'High Street' in the middle of the Test Valley. It is ideally situated for a relaxing break, close enough to visit the New Forest and many Stately Homes.

The Grosvenor was chosen as our base due to its cost and location (£134 for DBB).

Externally the Grosvenor looks nice, and it is clear that it was an important place at some point in its past. The reception desk is rarely manned, but once a little bell was pushed, a member of staff was quick to appear. Check-in was swift; no swipe of a credit-card, and a little card was presented to me for charging extras to the room.

I'd deliberately booked a four-poster room (as per the picture on the Greene King website) and I was not disappointed. Whilst yes, the decor is incongruous with the building and it has seen better days, it was clean and the bathroom looked to have been recently re-tiled. Fresh white bed linen and towels were provided and the bed was particularly comfortable (the mattress being covered with a duck down topper).

The furniture was rather marked, but was clean. The television was old, and possessed only four terrestrial channels. Tea and coffee making facilities were basic.

The bathroom was clean and tidy and had a very satisfactory shower.

When my guest and I went down for dinner we entered the bar area (which was empty). A pleasant girl took our drinks order and we took a seat in the cosy bar area. Drink prices were average for a pub/hotel (£8 for a large gin & tonic and bottled water).

The dining room is nicely arranged; a panelled room with engravings of horses and jockeys. Service was very competent by a pleasant waiter. The food was very good and varied, with a lean towards the game end. The duck salad and whole roast partridge were particularly good. The wine choice was varied.

Breakfast was equally as competent and the eggs benedict and smoked kippers were done well. The dining room was full for breakfast and service was pleasant but inadequate for the number of diners. Those who arrived later in the morning for breakfast were greeted with used/unmade tables and slow service.

Checkout was again very swift and the receptionist was knowledgeable about the local area.

In conclusion, this hotel is a great stay for a night or two, but seriously lacks any personality. The staff, whilst all pleasant, are very young and not a single member of staff was seen that looked over 21. This lack of experience and management was most evident in the bar and breakfast service.

Try the Grosvenor if you are passing by, but don’t expect the luxury and high-end service that is found in city or large town hotels. It is a bargain of a hotel and unfortunately Greene King don’t appear to have the resources to raise its game.

For a hotel that is owned by a major plc that has made more than £100 million pounds profit per year for the last four years the standard is extremely poor.
The public areas are shabby and worn. The bedrooms desperately need decorating. The bathrooms suffer from mould and dirt around the bath.We had five rooms and in at least two of them there was evidence of water having come through the ceiling at some time in the past.In the annex a damp and musty smell was very evident.
On the plus side the breakfast was good and the staff that served it,and those that worked in the bar, were fine.
We did not eat in the restaurant because the menu was of little interest and part way through the week the chalk specials on the chalk board in the bar were rubbed out and never replaced. For the five nights we were there we ate in the Vine and The White Hart just down the road.We were a bit surprised that the management didn't notice this and at least try and find out why we didn't want to eat there.
On the plus side it was cheap so maybe we got what we paid for although all of us would have preferred to have paid more and had better
