This is a very beautiful hotel. The interior design is lovely, and the rooms and public areas are extremely well designed and comfortable.

Lime Wood is in a lovely setting in the New Forest, and feels very private and rural. This, despite the fact that the transfer from London is surprisingly easy. The facilities are excellent, including a great spa and bicycles and maps for exploring the New Forest.

The food in the two restaurants is very good, although the food in the more formal dining room sometimes teeters on the edge of being too fussy for the quality of the cooking. Some dishes could be simplified and modernised.

The only thing which detracts from the experience at this hotel is the sometimes maddening slowness of the service in the restaurants and bar. The service elsewhere is excellent, and the bar and restauarant staff are not rude or unhelpful. They just take about twice as long to bring anything (menus, then drinks, then food, and so on through the meal) as is normal in even a country hotel. This makes for a rather unrelaxing experience, because it means that you are constantly wondering whether the next item is ever going to arrive.

Other than this, which I am sure can be ironed out with a bit of focus by the F&B manager, this is an excellent hotel which I intend to go back to.

Thank you for your review of Lime Wood Hotel. I am thrilled that you made use of the bicycles and maps to explore the wonderful setting we are surrounded by and enjoyed our facilities here.

The Dining Room ethos we try to convey is one of serious food, but without the fuss. I am disappointed on this occasion that this was not your experience. I believe that quick, reliable and unobtrusive service is fundamental to what makes Lime Wood different from other typical hotels. Clearly the service you received is not acceptable, but it is only through criticism like this that we can further develop our training program and improve on our standards. Your comments have been passed to Luke our Head Chef and Oliver our Food and Beverage Manager to see where we need to implement changes to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

I am however glad that you intend to revisit us, I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Kind regards,
Justin Pinchbeck

My husband and I and our two boys aged 11 and 13 stayed at Lime Wood for 3 nights over Christmas. We usually spend Christmas in Asia so we were a little bit weary of spending Christmas in an English hotel. We needn't have worried - from the moment we pulled up to the front door, we knew Lime Wood would be perfect!

We stayed in a Courtyard room as we had our dog, Stanley with us too. The Courtyard rooms have an upstairs and downstairs and so our boys slept on the pull out sofa bed in the living room. It was perfect as we had enough space for all of us without being crowded.

The decor is all lovely and the rooms are kept spotlessly clean. The Bamford organic bathroom products are also a lovely extravagant touch.

I cannot express how lovely our Christmas at Lime Wood was and this was a lot to do with the staff at Lime Wood. When we came back from dinner on Christmas Eve, there was a massive hamper outside our door full of luxurious foodie goodies. I was overwhelmed with Christmas excitement though when I spied the wrapped Christmas chocolate Santas lying on top of it along with wrapped gifts for the children. It was just so thoughtful and totally in the spirit of Christmas.

The spa is fantastic. I had a Nude facial which was superb and the sports massage was excellent too. I would definitely book in for more treatments when I return - worth every penny.

The restaurants are both wonderful although we really love the laid back Scullery. Bar is sumptous with delicious cocktails and wine and more importantly, perfectly chilled champagne! So often hotels let themselves down with champagne so I was thrilled!

Our dog Stanley was made to feel welcome everywhere. he is a rather large beast at 90 kilos as he is a Great Dane and he loved every moment of his time there. The New Forest is steps away and beautiful in all weathers.

Lime Wood has something for all people and all generations.

Don't waste any more time - book now!

We stayed here for two days and a night. Staff were superb from booking on the telephone through to our departure. The interiors are a great mix of country house and contemporary, the spa has been really well planned and executed and prices, considering the standard of the hotel, were resonable.
We will be back with friends before the autumn.

Lime Wood is impressive from the start - the drive up to the main house makes you feel like you are arriving. As you draw up to the house in your car you are greeted by name, as you are throughout your stay. The car is parked for you, as following a tour of the main parts of the hotel you are escorted to your room. The staff are all very friendly - a mix of English and other European nationalities.

We stayed in Room 1, which is double aspect with views straight down the drive and to the Herb House (the spa). With a large marbled bathroom with walk-in large shower and double-ended bath, this is a very nice room. Touches such as the ipod playing when you arrive and the plate of sweets add to the sense of arriving. A word of warning with Room 1 - the bed is very, very, soft. At times it felt like we were on a water bed. Indeed neither my wife or I slept particularly well either night. There is also no air-conditioning in the room, so in the summer the room can become quite hot, despite both windows being open.

Breakfast is served in the scullery and is a very british and local product affair. Very rustic. However breakfast is let down by the service - running out of juice and having to have it pointed out, no teaspoons to eat yoghurt with, running ouit of side plates and being expected to eat toast off dinner plates.

We ate dinner in the restaurant one night. The cooking is good, but suffers from trying too hard. Overly complex cooking with too many flavours fighting each other. Trying a little less hard and simplifying would improve the whole experience. Again the service was not what it should have been. The staff seemed flustered.

The spa is magnificent and a lot of money has been spent on it. With lots of glass the indoor swimming pool feels as if it is outside. Lots of towels and free bottled water abound. The hydro therapy pool is large, with fantastic views over the New Forest. The sauna, unusually, has a panoramic glass wall with views over the New Forest that could make you think that you were in a sauna in Finland.

The outdoor hot pool is small but very nicely done with chairs all around. It could probably get very busy on hot days as there are not many chairs.

The grounds are lovely with plenty of walks and interesting modern sculptures strategically placed.

There are plenty of living rooms to sit in and read the newspapers and have coffee or drinks, which makes for a very relaxing atmosphere.

A recommendable hotel for a relaxing weekend break - could be even better with the right leadership enforcing the levels of service a hotel like this should offer (no criticism of the staff who couldn't be friendlier) and firmer beds.

Second stay in 6 months.
We come from Scotland just to come here.
Extraordinary style but effortlessly done. Grounded menus, incredible design & function of the uniquely appointed buildings and a wonderful, heaven-sent location combine with the one secret ingredient; the UK's greatest staff. The fine tightrope between professional & personal is trod with deft elegance & warmth.
It's rare that a £1k+ hedonism weekend can be called good value; Lime Wood makes the claim legitimate.

Great everything! Couldn't have asked for anything better. Very obliging staff in every department. We changed room with minimum of fuss after one night on my wife's request.
Food excellent, ambience excellent, spa and gym excellent.
We're already looking to go back.

Stayed for two nights as part of a surprise birthday party; in general the reviews of this hotel are very fair and accurate so not really much more to add. The reception staff are very helpful and their cheeriness is is pretty much repeated throughout the hotel. The scullery is a good facility serving a good variety of food all day and serves breakfast up till 11.00am! The restaurant was good although I did not notice a step up from the scullery and think there could have been more staff on hand.

The spa is very good indeed, modern and well equipped. The only suggestion I would have is that it would have been nice if there were some disposal razors - having had a steam and sauna I would have liked a razor (forgot to take my own from the room)

The public rooms are very nice - lots of well furnished rooms to sit and chat, and as said already the staff throughout are great.

A couple of negatives - The bikes which are available for free use need a service - the one I used had a dodgy chain that kept sticking and the gear leaver was broken.

The room we stayed in (a generous in the main house) had a terrible damp smell in the bathroom which was not very nice. The hotel were obviously aware of the problem as the wall next to the drain was blistered and had been coated in paint a number of times to stop it flaking off. In a room costing a good London price - you shouldn't have a smelly drain, particularly since the hotel must be aware of it. (window in room always left open, and blistered wall)

Overall however a great place to go and would definitely consider returning.

Room Tip: Sleep with window open? - Beware of gravel paths!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Lime Wood, a boutique country house hotel in England, is set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, 1.5 miles from the small town of Lyndhurst and just an hour and a half drive from London. We like to think of ourselves as a luxury country house hotel with a difference. We've used Lime Wood's classical structure as the basis of our design but we've lovingly renovated it with a fresh approach, reviving its architecture and grounds. We've kept the spirit of its past, taken inspiration from its extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and added the odd contemporary twist to bring it to life. The food is by Luke Holder and Angela Hartnett. With its proximity to London, our New Forest boutique hotel really is the ultimate countryside getaway; perfect for weekend breaks, a dash from the city, or an escape from home; whatever your motivations, we can't wait to show you around. ... more   less
