We,ve stayed at Limewood a few times and it's fair to say that the food was not the main attraction; the location, the rooms and the spa, yes, but the food always (slightly) disappointed. Not any more now that Angela Harnett is in charge. Her food is mostly superb,.at times sublime and always yummy. This place costs an arm and a leg - almost £1k a night for one of the pavilion suites and that doesn't include breakfast! But it's about as good as a country house hotel can be. Go if you can.

We spent 1 night in a "cosy room ".. the rooms are clean, luxurious and have everything you need in them overlooking the lovely grounds.
The hotel staff are friendly, helpful and are around to cater for your every wish.
We picked Limewood to celebrate my birthday because of the location and the wonderful reviews on the spa area, this was not a disappointment , the spa was relaxing with the indoor/ outdoor theme running throughout, the indoor pool had doors that slid open to reveal the outdoor hydro pool and lounges, the indoor hydro pool had several water features along with a very comfortable steam and sauna room, we spent a few hours just in the water areas, the spa has its own
restaurant and treatment area as well as a well kitted out gym! .
The family joined us in the evening for dinner, table for 7 in the restaurant, unfortunately my sister fell over prior to dinner in the bar area where she slipped on a tiny step that runs around the outside of the bar , as the bar is not a bright room in the evening, and the flooring has similar colours on both levels this step is hard to see, especially if your not aware of the layout, however the staff handled her fall very well and Billy managed to carry out some immediate first aid which helped her feel a lot better.
I found the food very good in the restaurant as did most of our party, but my mother had to send her starter back as it was not hot enough and the duck she had for her main course , although some pieces were good the majority of it was very tough and hard to cut.
Again the staff handled the situation professionally and they made sure that we were happy.
Despite these negative issues, I was very happy with my stay at Limewood and I would love to have the chance to stay there again.

Limewood House is a faultlessly good experience. On both visits, it's been a perfect weekend and incredibly relaxing. From the moment you arrive, the staff are a delight, will park up your car and take you to your room and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are lovely, very comfortable, classy and nicely designed and the bathrooms are big and spacious. The food is a highlight, Angela Hartnett has done a great job and was in the kitchen cooking on one of our visits. Delicious food and faultless service. The spa is equally great, even without booking treatments it's still a lovely experience with even the changing rooms very impressive. If you want a luxury short break a few hours from London, you can't beat it.

We booked a private dining room for 14 people a couple of months ago to celebrate a colleagues retirement as we thought Limewood would be a really memorable venue.

We started with a private room to have pre dinner drinks. On arrival most of the staff didn't know where we were meant to be. Once in the room it took a long time for orders to be taken and the drinks to arrive. It would have been helpful to have had sight of the menu at this stage but we were ushered into the private dining room before being given them. Another twenty minute wait.

First courses were fine as far as I could see. Main courses fine for most of us. The vegetarians however had a different experience. Mushroom risotto was really dull and as most people said should have had some salad with it.

Vegetarians who had the pasta dish found that they were eating minced veal! As my wife said I haven't eaten meat for over 25 years and particularly not this. The maitre'd was very apologetic but did not offer anything else to replace it. She went home hungry!

All in all a less than encouraging experience. The hotel did reduce our bill to reflect the poor quality of their service but I would much rather have paid the full amount to have had an enjoyable evening without avoidable glitches.

We won't be going back there in a hurry!

We came here for my 50th and I could not have asked for better. Denise described it as, "like being wrapped in a ball of cotton wool and thoroughly pampered".

We got automatically upgraded when we got there to Coach House 1; a lovely spacious room with an enormous comfortable bed. The en-suite is beautifully designed with a lovely bath big enough for two.

The spa is fabulous. I have been to a great many hotels with spas and all seem to disappoint or have been added as an afterthought but not this one. It has been meticulously thought out with free robes, towels slippers and abundant bottles of water all over the place. There is a lovely outdoor hydro-pool as well as an indoor one that has the most stunning view to the woodlands. Denise loved her facial but particularly like the relaxation rooms afterwards.

One other thing to do is take a walk through the grounds and through the surrounding woodland; it is beautiful and so very quiet; not a car to be heard.

The food here is very good too although it is not the most memorable experience of the hotel. We enjoyed the food we had immensely but struggled to find options we liked from the menu. There were a lot of things we liked but not the combination they came in. For example, there was cod with scallops (I don't like cod but why not put scallops with a better quality fish like bass or sea bream) and lamb with lambs liver (I adore lamb but hate liver of all kinds) There were a great many odd combinations so we only dined here once and cancelled our second nights booking as a result; we did enjoy the food we had though.

I have to end on a positive note though and that is the staff. They are so lovely, so kind and thoroughly professional. They made us feel so welcome and made our stay very special. You get the feelling they love working there.

Room Tip: Coach House 1 is a lovely split-level room. The bedroom with TV and mini-bar alone is big enough bu...

We were won over from the moment we arrived. The hotel interior has been beautifully renovated and the additional buildings are in keeping with the whole. We stayed in one of the coach house rooms - lovely and spacious and very comfortable. The views are over the forest and there is a patio area if you're looking for privacy outside.

The location is perfect for walking and outdoor activity, and when the weather turned we were able to make full use of the spa pools and the gym, which is very well kitted out. I'd love to try some of the exercise classes next time round. The pool is open to children as well as adults but there are set times blocked out for children so if you want to just sit back and relax, it's best to avoid the peak times.

We had dinner in the main restaurant on both nights of our stay: it's a very relaxed environment and the service was excellent. The food was good quality although not fancy, which is what they pride themselves on. There is also a separate menu for the bar area but we didn't get a chance to try this. It was disappointing not to have breakfast included, however there are cheaper options at the Raw and Cured cafe attached to the spa. We can definitely recommend the smoothies!

We'll definitely be going back despite the prices - a truly relaxing experience away from it all.

We arrived at Lime Wood & were informed by the receptionist that she did not have a record of our booking. Luckily I had a copy of the confirmation with me (old fashioned paper still works a treat), & after a nervous 10 minute wait it was all sorted & without a word from us, we were given a room upgrade!
Lime wood is an elegant, classic, modern interpretation of a British country estate. The renovation has been tastefully and technically well done. This is evident in the very luxurious spa & treatment area. The spa was wonderful & we used it twice. One swimming pool & two spa pools, we loved it. It has the most stunning changing rooms I have ever seen, including a lovely room with a bath, very indulgent indeed.
The restaurant & the beautiful communal sitting areas feel so comfortable but at the same time have an understated elegance that just made us feel like we were spoiling ourselves. Both breakfasts were wonderful & our dinner in the Hartnet restaurant were delicious & I loved eating smoked salmon from their own smoke house.
The atmosphere was warm & inviting & a big part of this was down to the staff, who were so friendly & well mannered & always ready to assist.
Great location as we went for country walks. Yes, the room rate is very expensive so it is either for the wealthy or a special weekend treat. However once there, the drinks & the food were reasonable & of a very high standard. We loved every minute of our stay & will definitely be saving our pennies & returning for more.

Room Tip: We stayed in Coach House One, which was across the courtyard. The suit was stunning, lots of wood an...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Lime Wood, a boutique country house hotel in England, is set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, 1.5 miles from the small town of Lyndhurst and just an hour and a half drive from London. We like to think of ourselves as a luxury country house hotel with a difference. We've used Lime Wood's classical structure as the basis of our design but we've lovingly renovated it with a fresh approach, reviving its architecture and grounds. We've kept the spirit of its past, taken inspiration from its extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and added the odd contemporary twist to bring it to life. The food is by Luke Holder and Angela Hartnett. With its proximity to London, our New Forest boutique hotel really is the ultimate countryside getaway; perfect for weekend breaks, a dash from the city, or an escape from home; whatever your motivations, we can't wait to show you around. ... more   less
