“One of the best hotels we have stayed at”
Reviewed 2 February 2014 via mobile

I took my wife for a 2 night stay at Lime Wood for a birthday treat. From the minute we arrived to the time we checked out the service was superb. The staff are friendly and efficient. The hotel is picturesque in a quiet location with fantastic amenities. The spa is wonderful and we especially enjoyed the hydro therapy area, as well as a glass of wine and a snack at the Raw & Cured cafe. Our room was a very nice surprise with the sleeping area being on a mezzanine level within the room. It was extremely peaceful and comfortable and the bathroom was great. The courtyard bar served very tasty lunches as well as a good selection of local beers. The Hartnett & Holder restaurant did not disappoint. A lovely atmosphere, attentive waiting staff and superb food. All in all this was a very enjoyable stay that will remain in the memory for many years to come.

We enjoyed afternoon tea over the weekend at this stunning hotel. The food was brilliant and we could have had endless amounts of it at no extra cost. We had the lovely library area to ourselves, even though we hadn't requested this on booking, but it turned out lovely. They lit the fire for us and staff were very attentive and friendly. They found out it was my birthday and bought an extra cake for me!

Can't wait to return for another experience here!

The hotel is set in a majestic landscape and the property itself has been restored to a very high order. Whilst the hotel is welcoming and the spa as good as any, the service is only mediocre at best. Its not through a lack of consideration, but staff are vague and forgetful at times. The food was of a high standard but the single restaurant option and non variability of the menu make for too much repetition iof you are there for anything other than a weekend. Wine prices are also high by industry standards, as the hotel recognises the captive nature of its market. The rooms are well appointed but a common complaint during our stay amongst other residents was that they are too warm with limited ability to control the temperature. The hotel does not cater well for children. TO be fair, they don't advertise that they do but there is little for young ones to do. A decent place all in all but expensive for what it offers relative to the superlative Babington House.

On a very dark and stormy night we arrived at this wonderful oasis saddled with two excited dogs, one frazzled teenager and an elderly mother. However upon being shown into our beautiful lodge, complete with dog beds, a roaring fire and a delightful bottle of complimentary wine, the stress of the day slipped away. Dinner was delightful in the lovely dining room, the only complaint being that the kitchen was a little heavy handed with the salt, on occasion. However the saffron risotto was to die for, the fried zucchini and the parmesan polenta also garnered rave reviews. Best of all however was the caramel pudding, so good we ordered it both nights.
The hotel is decorated in calm Farrow and Ball colours with great attention to detail, the whole place feels special. The spa was very good, although massages are very expensive, however the yoga and pilates classes were excellent. The spa has its own cafe for fresh juices and healthy salads, very good for a light breakfast or snack at lunch. The hotel is right in the New Forest, absolutely perfect for long walks, even in the driving rain! The staff were all very good, extremely helpful and didn't seem to mind our two rather wet, muddy dogs putting paw marks everywhere. Two nights was not nearly enough!

Room Tip: The lodges are fantastic for families.

Despite bad weather on one das, we spent the perfect two nights at this gorgeous place; which has a feel of understated luxury, it is classic yet modern in all its amenities and discreet service.

Certain rooms are suitable for travellers with pets and everything is done so they have a good stay too.

The restaurant was very nice with exquisite food served with no fuss, it was busy even on a Monday night which is nice and does not make you feel overcrowded by staff as restaurants can be on early weekly days.

We will most certainly return! It is hospitality at its best...

Stayed for one night on 30 December as managed to get the last room there. We stayed with our four-year-old toddler and they put a bed in there for us without even asking which was helpful. Rooms were faultless as were all the surroundings bar area restaurants etc.

Had an early dinner in the restaurant with our toddler and everything was beautiful with regards to the settings and the service, however, although the food was very good I'm not sure it was one of the best meals I have ever had. It was very nice but just lacked something I can't put my
finger on.

The staff were lovely and very
helpful however I think they possibly could perhaps do with one more waiter in the bar area as it seemed to take a little while to catch anyone's attention.

We stayed at The Pig earlier in the year and I do feel that the breakfasts were slightly better there as in they had more
choices at the buffet which we opted for.

The room was faultless however
and we had a great nights sleep and would definitely go back again.

A mere 90 miles south of London and you're in the New Forrest of clear starry skies, fresh air, wild horses, giant California Redwoods nearby, and a fantastic spa, with hydropool, amazing gym, and spa cafe, and gorgeous views from every angle of every beautiful room, suite, pavillion, breakfast scullery, courtyard, library, dining room and patio. And the beds, the service...wow. So here's the test: what haven't I mentioned? The food. This is where I soon forget LIme Wood is part of the Relais & Chateau group of hotels. The menu tries too hard to be all things to all people who like to eat everything all at once. So say you like Italian food (I like Italian food) - do you want parmesan cheese or mozzarella or marscapone on everything? Does everything have to have cheese on it to try to be Italian? Or let's say you like fish and scallops. Do you want it to taste like vinegar? This is my first scathing food review on tripadvisor, and a wake up call to Hartnett and Holder: Please stop experimenting on the customers. Your food does not have to be clever or complimented. How about authentically delicious without gimmickery? Smoked and fermented has never been a way through to good digestion. Your gnocci with wild game ragout was pretty good as was your Milanese risotto. But the menu is an argument waiting for a simpler outcome among pastas, meat and fish: delicious. But as the hotel is so busy, so hard to get into, booked so far ahead in advance, you probably won't take any notice. Good luck to you.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Lime Wood, a boutique country house hotel in England, is set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, 1.5 miles from the small town of Lyndhurst and just an hour and a half drive from London. We like to think of ourselves as a luxury country house hotel with a difference. We've used Lime Wood's classical structure as the basis of our design but we've lovingly renovated it with a fresh approach, reviving its architecture and grounds. We've kept the spirit of its past, taken inspiration from its extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and added the odd contemporary twist to bring it to life. The food is by Luke Holder and Angela Hartnett. With its proximity to London, our New Forest boutique hotel really is the ultimate countryside getaway; perfect for weekend breaks, a dash from the city, or an escape from home; whatever your motivations, we can't wait to show you around. ... more   less
