Stayed for just a night at Lime wood as a birthday treat. The staff were super friendly and gave a brief tour of the hotel and it's amenities before showing us to our gorgeous room. The room was excellent, spacious, with a super big comfy bed and an amazing bathroom. All mod cons, even a log fire place and a nice view of the gardens. We didn't use the spa, but from the outside it did look very inviting. Hunter boots were available in all sizes, for a wonder in the woods and I think there are bikes available as well.
We had some great cocktails in the bar before dining in the restaurant. Breakfast was lovely, but a little but pricey. A great break, will definitely be back.

Location = approx 15 min walk into the town

Room Tip: Crescent 1 excellent spacious room, although the store room is underneath so you do get some noise f...

After having this hotel on our wish list but never having tried it, we spent 3 glorious days at this wonderful hotel. Our room was in the 'generous' category and was very impressive. Any hotel room which has both a doorbell and a staircase is fine by me! The room also had a large collection of up to date magazines and reading material. This was a nice touch and one I haven't seen before. The spa is lovely, although just free bottled water seems a bit tight these days. For a spa of this quality I would normally expect nibbles, herbal teas to be available in the relaxation rooms at least. Food wise, the fare served in the Harnett Holder restaurant is very good. The meal was spoiled slightly by the tables being much too close together. In our section of the restaurant, one, maybe two tables could be removed to make a much better atmosphere. Breakfast in the scullery was excellent, fantastic décor, this room did not feel like a hotel at all. The choices on offer were also excellent. We had one meal in the bar, again, food was excellent, service prompt and the atmosphere in the bar is very relaxed. Now on to the real star of the show which is the raw & cured spa café. I cannot speak highly enough of this place, the food was out of this world (despite) being very healthy! The staff at the hotel are all friendly but the ladies at raw & cured were amazing, giving details and advice on dishes, relaxed whilst also being professional. My wife is planning a return trip to the hotel with her friends, purely to take them to raw & cured, that is how much we enjoyed it.
So, on the whole a lovely treat to stay here. I would definitely recommend it and we will stay here again.

Limewood manages to combine a superb dining experience with luxurious surroundings and facilities and an unpretentious atmosphere. What a trick to pull off. We experienced a lovely lunch and will definitely be back for the dining and spa experience. Hats off to Hartnett and Holder.

My husband and I had high hopes and expectations of our stay at Lime Wood and we were not disappointed! Everything from the wonderfully welcoming staff who greeted us upon our (very early) arrival, to the beautifully apportioned spa, to the unexpected and very welcome room upgrade and bottle of champagne which awaited us, was executed in style and professionalism. The hotel is expensive but you do feel that you get what you pay for and is an oasis of tranquil luxury. Despite being quite busy with day users, the spa never felt over-crowded and staff were constantly working hard to ensure the very highest standards of tidiness and cleanliness. Jo and Faye provided excellent treatments. We only stayed one night and got the feeling that the menu would have been the same on the second night which may have been a little disappointing. The breakfast the following morning was possibly one of the very best that we have ever experienced - a huge selection of fabulously fresh fruit, bakery goods and yoghurts and honeycomb. The choice of cooked breakfasts was very expansive. A really wonderful treat away.

Room Tip: Crescent 1 is up a spiral staircase, has a working open fire and a beautiful bathroom with huge walk...

I'd been wanting to go to Lime Wood ever since reading last year that Angela Hartnett was now at the helm - and when my husband booked it as a surprise I was jumping up and down with joy.
We arrived on Thursday afternoon, to be greeted by lovely friendly Beth, who took us on a tour of the hotel before showing us our room. My husband had booked an "eaves" room, but we'd been upgraded - lucky us - to a gorgeous room with a huge marble bathroom on the first floor. We went straight down to the courtyard bar for tea (great choice of herbals) and light fluffy scones with jam and cream. My only gripe of the entire stay was that none of the staff noticed or removed the crumbs on our table from its previous occupants, which looked sloppy. But fortunately this was not a sign of things to come. We spent an hour or so in the wonderful spa (fab 16m pool and large outdoor hot tub, which we used) then got ready for dinner, where waitress Sarah deserves a special mention. She really was exceptional - her eagle eye spotting from the other side of the room if our glasses were empty, and flying over to fill them before we'd even noticed ourselves. She was friendly, courteous, and on the ball - remembering when she saw us at lunch the next day that she had mentioned the lemon tart to us and even bringing us a slither to try so we didn't miss out. She is a real asset to this restaurant.
The decor is charming. The food excellent - and totally unfussy. My vitello tonnato was perfect. This is a dish that needs to be slightly salty, and it was, but another shake of the salt pot and it would have gone too far. I LOVED the addition of a sprinkle of lemony gremolata to the dish. (Lemon popped up a lot on the menu, and was refreshing whenever it did). My husband, a chef, was in raptures over the agnolotti with veal and chicken livers - and it really was delicious. I think we were both slightly less enchanted by our mains, and had a whole conversation about why that is often the case. My grilled turbot with smoked aubergine capponata (£24) looked a bit small, and, having had its skin removed, the fish looked and tasted like poached halibut - and on the invoice it was in fact called halibut! Personally I would have found a few griddle marks more appetising on the fish... The aubergine was yummy, and the perfect accompaniment - but it looked too grey and dull. We eat with our eyes, too, and although I hate over fussy food, I felt a few chunks of tomato concasse and a sprinkle of herbs would have added some zing. My husband had the veal sweetbreads with pearl barley was good but overpriced (£32).
For dessert my husband chose from the ice creams ("just the right temperature") but I couldn't resist the apple millefeuille, which was brought to the table in its entirety for the diner to say "when" as the waiter hovered with his big knife. Beautiful pastry, just the right amount of salty, caramelised apples and some fresh slithers of raw apple, and lots of cream. Divine.
We thought we'd struggle to find room for breakfast - but the buffet was irresistible (yogurts, fruit, home made granola, pastries, cheeses, meats etc, and hot dishes for the greedy). Sadly breakfast is not included in the price of the room.
Then I had a wonderful massage in the spa, and we squeezed in lunch (two starters from the a la carte for me - the ribollita and the baby vegetable and ewe cheese salad - while my husband had perfectly cooked poached egg salad and then hake with chick peas from the set lunch menu). Then it was back to the car, and back home to London... 24 hours felt like a full weekend, but next time we'll make sure it really is.

As before, we enjoyed the spa and the common areas are very nice. However, on a second visit it lost the wow factor and we noticed some more of the faults, such as the smell of cooking permanently engulfing the outside of our room and the fact that the situation in the New Forest could best be described as bland. On the plus side, the new bar area was nice (albeit cold in February) and the restaurant was better. Negatives include the annoying fact that they charge extra for breakfast; just increase the 350/night room rate to 365 and make everyone happy?! We also resent the offer of tea and coffee in the morning, only fir a £9 charge on check-out.....when spending 550/night inc dinner, it just feels wrong. Still, a good spa hotel, but we won't be back - not that this is a worry for Lime Wood, as it seems to enjoy a strong following (but don't get complacent!).

Room Tip: Not room 8....nice room, but seemingly above kitchens, hence smelly.

I took my wife away for a relaxing romantic weekend away and we got what we wanted. Room amazing. Service exceptional. Location amazing. This is a great country hotel with knowledgeable and attentive staff. The New Forest is an amazing location with great walks. The only thing they could not provide is good weather.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Lime Wood, a boutique country house hotel in England, is set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, 1.5 miles from the small town of Lyndhurst and just an hour and a half drive from London. We like to think of ourselves as a luxury country house hotel with a difference. We've used Lime Wood's classical structure as the basis of our design but we've lovingly renovated it with a fresh approach, reviving its architecture and grounds. We've kept the spirit of its past, taken inspiration from its extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and added the odd contemporary twist to bring it to life. The food is by Luke Holder and Angela Hartnett. With its proximity to London, our New Forest boutique hotel really is the ultimate countryside getaway; perfect for weekend breaks, a dash from the city, or an escape from home; whatever your motivations, we can't wait to show you around. ... more   less
