This huge forest is so varied depending on which bit you are in, there is always something new to see. From thick oak forest to treeless heathland there is everything. You know you are in the Forest when you drive over the cattle grid. From then on it is the animals who have the priority hence the 40 mph speed limit throughout. The animals roaming wild are amazing - the famous New Forest ponies, horses, cows, sheep and pigs. There are deer too but as they are shy it is rare to see them.
The numerous small streams with gravel beds are wonderful for children, and indeed adults, to paddle in and picnic by.
There are dedicated car parks everywhere, mostly in the trees, from which to base your adventure.
Some of the woodland is a treasure trove for mushroom hunters in the right season, and leaves and nuts can be collected. A real education in wildlife for all the family.
There are villages full of thatched cottages and quaint pubs all around. All the properties have cattle grids so the animals do not trespass into the private gardens!
