“Cosy place central to the New Forest”
Reviewed 23 September 2011

Candlestick Cottage is a quaint place with a lovely couple running it, however, it is a shame they let themselves down by not investing in updating the decor which is circa 1970's/60's. Still the beds are comfortable, the dinner was lovely and the breakfast was good. Had a thoroughly enjoyable time there, pity it was only for an overnight stay.

“Warm and unique, and such a great location for the new forest”
Reviewed 6 March 2011

Spent a lovely evening meal and night there with my wife. Great value and close to the new forest (5 mins away) and although it is not the most modern I have been in, it is so nice to stay in a family owned establishment. After staying in travel lodges and premier inns how nice is it to feel appreciated for our custom. Rooms were clean and the breakfast was lovely......great for a weekend bolt hole if you want to explore the wonderfull new forest.

“Never Again!”
Reviewed 25 January 2011

Went to Candlesticks to celebrate my birthday, first and last visit. Had steak - not good - garnish was a small piece of iceberg lettuce with 1 slice of tomatoe - the tomatoe covered the lettuce! Puddings were bought in and still frozen!

“Stuck in a time warp!!!”
Reviewed 25 August 2010

Ok, let's get the good news over with....the proprietor is a very nice man. That's it!!
This inn is definitely stuck in a late 60's early seventies time warp. it's in desperate need of a major refurbishment to bring it up to date. It's in a great location and with the right decoration and furniture and a descent menu with a good chef, could be made into a goldmine. The food was not great at all and is obviously brought in from supermarkets and then cooked ready to serve. hire a descent chef!!!! The proprietor also multitasked, he was the receptionist, the barman, the telephonist, the waiter and probably the chief cook and bottle washer, but was still a very nice man.
The glasses we had were dirty and not washed properly, and the bar is not well stocked, no beer on tap and the bar looks horribly dirty, in fact you get the impression the whole place needs a huge clean. the rooms were ok for size, but please!! get some new beds/mattresses, the springs are literally sticking through the mattress. the shower was sooooo! noisy it must have alerted the neighbourhood!! but it did give us something to laugh about!! no flat screen tv's here I'm afraid, it's your 1960's old tv, that you'r parents had!!!
If you are the proprietor reading this, I'm sorry but the truth hurts, however with some tender care and a major overhaul, your place would be a fantastic goldmine and a lovely place to stay....Have a word with Gordon Ramsay, it's a great idea for his program where he revamps restaurants which need help.
