Owner description: On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the New Forest, you will find the peaceful haven of Buckler’s Hard, the unique and picturesque village where warships for Nelson’s navy were built. Visit the historic cottage displays recreating 18th century life, take a delightful riverside walk or enjoy a cruise on the tranquil Beaulieu River. Gift shop and Captain’s Cabin Cafe. Open every day (except Christmas Day).

My husband really wanted to visit this place, and for some reason I thought it would have 'real people' demonstrating the attractions, not papier mache figures. I don't know why I thought this - maybe I thought it was going to be like Plimoth Plantation in Massachussetts which is a similar attraction and has real actors! Anyway, the museum was interesting enough but I was disappointed that only a couple of the houses were open, and nobody around to speak to you about them.
It was a lovely day and we enjoyed being down by the river, but I can't help thinking they could make so much more of it!

Thank you for this review of your recent trip to Buckler’s Hard. During the peak season and school holidays we do have a living history programme which involves ‘real people’ taking on the personalities of people who lived and worked in the village. They speak with visitors and recount life in the village during the 18th Century.

Our static figures in the historic cottage and The New Inn displays, together with the accompanying audio, are designed to give visitors a feel of 18th Century life in Buckler’s Hard. Our customer feedback reports that 99% of visitors state they are either very satisfied or satisfied with this element of their visit, so we are sorry it did not meet your expectations on this occasion. We do continually look for ways to improve the Buckler’s Hard visitor attraction and will take a closer look at the Plimouth Plantation you mention.

Thank you again for your feedback and we are pleased you enjoyed your day by the Beaulieu River.

Regards,
The Buckler’s Hard Team

If you love a quiet river setting with gentle waves from wake of the boats rippling on the shore, you will love Beaulieu.

Not expensive, and worth a visit for the setting on the Beaulieu river estuary, as well as it's prestigious historical significance.

Bucklers Hard is a wonderful natural attraction with fantastic history and we were really looking forward to our visit. On arrival the girl in the tearoom was rude and miserable, and then the girl on the ticket desk didn't know if there was a hotel on the site, and then rudely told us that if we wanted more tea we would have to go round and not back through the ticket office. The museum was brilliant, but there was no-one there to guide us to the outside buildings as the two tour guides were busy chatting. We felt it was overpriced for what was offered as we had to discover everything ourselves. Very disappointing.

Thank you for posting your review on tripadvisor. We are sorry if our staff were not welcoming to you on your recent visit. This is disappointing to hear, and we will be looking into this further as customer service at Buckler’s Hard is important to us.

With regards to your feeling we are overpriced, our admission price covers entrance to the Maritime Museum, historic cottage displays, St Mary’s Chapel and Woodland Walk together with use of facilities and all day parking in the visitor car park. We do benchmark our admission prices against other similar attractions and feel the current price represents value for money.

If you would like to discuss your visit further, please contact us at info@bucklershard.co.uk.

Kind regards,
The Buckler’s Hard Team
