“Not just the usual Sunday Roast”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

My husband and I enjoyed yet another lunch at Monty's in at The Montagu Arms in Beaulieu. Having also dined there at the Michelin starred Terrace Restaurant, we honestly prefer Monty's. Comfortable, unpretentious and low key, with immaculately fresh ingredients.
Today we started with seared scallops with chorizo and crispy anchovies on a roasted red pepper purée. Perfectly prepared. Our only criticism might be that the purée was a trifle bland. The scallops and chorizo were delicious.
I enjoyed the spinach and gruyere twice baked souffle, garnished with a simply gorgeous salad of baby greens, cress and walnuts, while my husband enjoyed a filet of sea bass with a tomato caponata and fresh spinach pappardelle garnished with capers and fresh crab. Each component separately--very simple, but the combination of flavors was amazing.
No room for dessert today but we were tempted by the treacle tart with butterscotch sauce and peanut butter ice cream.
The service was friendly, prompt, but unobtrusive, and our lovely lunch topped off by meeting a group of the more prominent residents of Beaulieu village, the free roaming donkeys ( with a new foal!) in the courtyard outside the restaurant.
We look forward to our next visit, as always, to the New Forest.

“End Visit to Beaulieu here”
Reviewed 30 April 2013

Went here for dinner on a trip to the New Forest. There was a wait for food as the restaurant was full, but it was well under the predicted time. The haddock was nicely presented in some of the best batter I have ever tasted. At about £13 it was about 20% more than you would expect to pay for fish and chips in a bar, but it was very good. The beer from the local brewery was good.

“Perfect Sunday lunch.”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

Cosy sofas in the bar area and exceptional food in the restaurant make for a perfect Sunday lunch.
Had lunch at Monty's with my husband and it was superb. We had smoked mackerel pate to start followed by roast beef with all the trimmings (best roast beef I've had in a long time) although, we were full we could not resist the desert menu creme brûlée and assorted cheeses with all the trimmings, absolutely delicious! The restaurant manager and staff were friendly and the service was first class. The food was delicious and the place had great ambiance. My only criticism was the pool table in the bar area give it a rough and ready feel and the hand towel in the loo's extremely unhygienic.

“Lunch at Monty's Inn”
Reviewed 21 April 2013

Soup was warm to cold, beef far too rare to eat, no peas with fish and chips, no broad beans with the scallops which again were warm to cold rather than hot, Chicken stuffed with mushrooms just were dry and the rolls were burnt, wine was medium sweet rather than medium dry, Service was haphazrd and plates were cleared before the last person had finished eating. At one stage table was half cleared then left for 10 minutes before the rest of the clearing took place.Ladies toilets were pleasant but the gents floor needed a clean.

Terrace bar and gardens Totally different service couldn't do enough for us whilst we were wating.
