My husband and I enjoyed yet another lunch at Monty's in at The Montagu Arms in Beaulieu. Having also dined there at the Michelin starred Terrace Restaurant, we honestly prefer Monty's. Comfortable, unpretentious and low key, with immaculately fresh ingredients.
Today we started with seared scallops with chorizo and crispy anchovies on a roasted red pepper purée. Perfectly prepared. Our only criticism might be that the purée was a trifle bland. The scallops and chorizo were delicious.
I enjoyed the spinach and gruyere twice baked souffle, garnished with a simply gorgeous salad of baby greens, cress and walnuts, while my husband enjoyed a filet of sea bass with a tomato caponata and fresh spinach pappardelle garnished with capers and fresh crab. Each component separately--very simple, but the combination of flavors was amazing.
No room for dessert today but we were tempted by the treacle tart with butterscotch sauce and peanut butter ice cream.
The service was friendly, prompt, but unobtrusive, and our lovely lunch topped off by meeting a group of the more prominent residents of Beaulieu village, the free roaming donkeys ( with a new foal!) in the courtyard outside the restaurant.
We look forward to our next visit, as always, to the New Forest.
