“Prize Winning Stay”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

I was lucky enough to win a prize recently - an overnight stay at this hotel and a special "Game and Fizz" dinner for two. My husband and I loved everything about the place and can't wait to return. We were allocated the Pandora Room in the attic of the main house and, apart from the fact that it was a little dark, it was great - very comfortable and well equipped, with a modern bathroom with lashings of hot water.. It had a separate sitting room with two day beds so is obviously used as a family room too. The three course dinner was mouth-watering and without exception the staff were charming and attentive. Breakfast was perfect in every way and we didn't want to leave! The setting is beautiful with plenty to do in the area, and the hotel is also family and dog friendly too.

Thank you for your review and again congratulations on your prize, which we are very pleased that you enjoyed, as well as the other parts of the hotel.

This was disappointing all round. The hotel was lacking in any ambience and there was no front of house assistance on arrival. It could be so wonderful as the location is beautiful. I would certainly suggest that the Management clean the windows on the inside - the window in our room was absolutely filthy and has probably not been cleaned for 10+ years!

I am sorry you found your stay disappointing. Whilst most of our guests find the hotel has great ambience I do apologise for the windows. We do have them cleaned every 2 months, but with the recent weather we may have to look to have them cleaned more often.

My daughter's wedding was held recently at The Master Builder's House and I have only one word to describe it - FABULOUS!! From the initial planning by the Wedding Planner to the actual wedding day, everything was seamless. The staff went out of their way to make sure everyone had a good time, the food was delicious and the quirkiness of the building, plus the wonderful scenery surrounding the hotel, just made the day magical. Everyone said it was the best wedding they had ever been to and they all described their accommodation, either in The Henry Adams Wing or the main building as comfortable and well-appointed, even though most did not retire until 4am!
If you are considering getting married in The New Forest, I would recommend The Master Builder's 150%.

Room Tip: If you are taking a dog, they are welcomed in The Henry Adams Wing and the hotel, except the restaur...

We booked this as a 50th Birthday treat for my Husband, it was booked last minute, as he decided he wanted to go and see the James Bond car collection at Beaulieu
So pleased we made the choice , The hotel itself set in Beautiful settings, Forest walks along the river.
The hotel staff were very helpful and polite , nothing was too much trouble. Our room very comfortable and it makes a change to have a shower in a hotel with some power in it.
The hotel bar and lounge had open fires very cosy after a walk in the cold. We based our stay on bed breakfast and dinner , and i must say we were very pleased with what we got for the price we payed .
We are looking forward to making our stay a little longer next time .
5 minute car ride 40 minute walk through the forest and you are in Beaulieu well worth it which ever way you want to travel

Spent one night in The Henry Adams Wing in a standard room which was terrible - paint was peeling off the wood and walls (this is not 'distressed'!), a crowded bedroom with too much furniture, awful dark brown painted doors, gloomy dark blue walls and no decent view from the window. The walls are thin - could hear everything from the next door room...! These rooms are dog-friendly I think, and you could tell - there was a wet-dog smell in my room. Spent the night wishing I was back at the Premier Inn in Southampton (at half the price!). After complaining I was moved for my second night to a much better room (luxury) in the main building with a view over the river. Very comfortable bed and nicely furnished. Bathroom was a little pokey but there was a big difference in the standard and size of accommodation between the standard and luxury/chic rooms. Not a great atmosphere in the bar but there was a nice log fire and the barman was attentive and friendly. Food was ok - very simple pub food and an uninspired menu - enjoyed good fish and chips on my first night but the second night I tried the steak and mushroom pie which wasn't good - very tough steak. Didn't try the restaurant but the menu looked nice. Breakfast was adequate - had the cooked breakfast but the sausages were undercooked. Enjoyed sitting in the guest lounge - which was cozy and ideal for afternoon tea or coffee after dinner. There were one or two really great staff (the young blonde english waiter at breakfast was friendly and did a good job - sorry I didn't get his name) and a few that were a little dis-interested, on the whole I felt this place was poorly managed, and the staff lacked direction. In the Master Builder's 'blurb' the hotel is described as 'quirky' .... hmmm! The setting of the hotel was lovely but overall it was a very average hotel in need of a major overhaul and I would not come back.

Room Tip: Go for the more expensive rooms - the classic rooms are terrible.

Thank you for your review. We have a variety of bedrooms and our classic rooms in the Henry Adams wing are smaller, but are well appointed and are great value. We do have a couple of dog friendly rooms as many of our guests want to experience the wonderful outdoors in the New Forest along with their dogs. I am very pleased you enjoyed one of our riverview rooms. As you say we have a more simple bar menu to complement our restaurant menu, however we hope that simple still means well cooked and presented.

Many thanks for your positive review. We have a variety of different sized bedrooms and bathrooms and all quirky. However, we hope this quirkiness doesn't move towards tiredness, and we keep up an ongoing programme of refurbishment.

We attended a charity dinner here at which the speaker was Jody Scheckter, 1979 World F1 Champion. The food at the dinner, much of it from Jody's organic farm, was excellent. We stayed the night and had a charming room with a view of the river and a large well equipped bathroom.
Breakfast the next morning was good and plentiful. The location is delightful and we will certainly return.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building have the river views.
