“SUCH a fantastic short break”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

Reception staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Quirky atmosphere of the hotel was charming. (The bed was a little soft for our backs if truth be told) Location was superb. Our stroll through woodland up the estuary to picturesque Beaulieu was lovely. The room was good, excellent bath and shower.
Restaurant and log fire area were charming. Both evening meal and breakfast were very good value.
Dawid and Wiola were a joy to meet. They were friendly and helpful, not only as waiting staff, but also in furthering my new found hobby of learning Polish. 'Dziekuje' Dawid and Wiola, thank you
Fabulous venue for a short getaway break!

Extremely comfortable bed, good standard en-suite room. Enjoyable evening meal and breakfast was top notch. Great service in the restaurant from a delightful, extremely helpful and friendly couple from Poland. We stayed overnight with dinner and breakfast included in the price. Good value for money.

We booked last minute and couldn't have been luckier to find this place. Fantastic location, driving through the New Forest with its horses and cattle all around to get here, then right by the river at Bucklers Hard. So lovely.

Our welcome at Reception was excellent, warm, friendly and efficient. I can't stand hotels where the first impression is given by a young girl who thinks friendliness is an option. Not here. Superb.

Our room was right at the top in the original old building. Steep stairs, be warned, and sloping roof, but oh how cosy. Our room was Swiftsure, number 31. We loved it. It's been furnished with care and flair. Maybe too small for some though, but perfect for us, and we slept better than ever in a wonderful bed. The range of teas and coffees etc in the room was first class.

The restaurant food was delicious. We tried food like pigeon breast for the first time and it was fantastic. These places with rosettes... the chef can make anything and everything taste wonderful, and he did.

The staff were friendly and attentive. The real fire and comfy lounge was a welcome retreat.

Any niggles? Yes, there's always something because we guests are all different! I'm greedy and like an indulgent ice cream sundae for dessert. 3 balls of ice cream arrived, looking sad in the bowl. With a chef as skilled as this in the restaurant, it's a waste not to knock up something special!

But if all I can think to gripe about is the ice cream - then this is a winner.
We'll be back asap.

Room Tip: There are only 8 rooms in the original building, the rest are in the new annex. Steep stairs to get...

not everything was perfect , a cold shower was not really good in the morning but these things happen.the room we stayed in was 'illustrious' but not really living up to its name.the bed was huge and very comfy.cosy and decorated as would be expected from a hotel of this age.the staff were very helpful and amiable whilst we were there. At 8 we went down to the restaurant , we were shown to a large cosy fire lit lounge which was really comfortable could have stayed on the settee all night.our starters i must say were superb am a head chef and i have cooked in many great restaurant's) had the pigeon breast which was cooked to perfection. I did order the venison but instead received the duck..this was maybe the best thing to happen..it really was one of the best mains i have eaten in a hotel for some time.if the chef really cooked and prepared our food and sourced it from local producers i would wonder why he is not looking to get a star for his restaurant.the location of the hotel and the views , truly beautiful and a great place to relax , dog friendly and plenty of seating outside.the staff overall were attentive and seemed in control.one in particular looked after my rusty nails at the end of my dinner , David was cheery , helpful , laid back ( not comatose but chilled) and he maintained a professional air with the right blend of 'new best mate'..throughout dinner and after drinks he was in our company just the right amount of time.i would never hesitate in offering him a job , front of house in a restaurant.overall , my stay was enjoyable.not perfect but this world is not.i would love to go back.

I stayed here after a conference. The rooms were the new ones at the back of the hotel, and needed some paint and tlc. Apart from the decoration, the rooms were warm, very comfortable, and the location is just beautiful. I first came here as a child some 40+ years ago, and always wanted to come to stay - I am so pleased I had that opportunity!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in the old part of the building!

We stayed Saturday night, bed, breakfast and evening meal. Our reception was very welcoming, we were given a thorough tour, the attic room we has was plenty spacious enough for family of 4. Lovely quirky furnishings. Beautiful view of the river and street. Dinner was very nice although not to the children's taste. Breakfast fantastic selection and delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. My bill was also wrong but I checked it thoroughly before settling up ;0). Would love to stay here again and will absolutely recommend it!

We stayed on a Saturday night in Feb 2014. Beautiful location and lovely views from room windows. The rooms are quite tatty (light fixtures exposed, toilet didn't flush). Be very careful on the room packages - we paid for a package that included £60 towards dinner but had over £40 charges for items that were excluded. And, we paid up front for kids meals but they still charged us for those on the final bill as well??! Overall, it's very poorly managed.

Thank you for your review and my huge apologies that your children's food was overcharged. We do sometimes have to charge supplements on our menu for those guests who stay on our dinner, bed and breakfast package (For example Scallops can be incredibly expensive at certain times of year). However we do try to keep this balanced. We have a constant bedroom maintenance programme and again apologies that we have let you down on this side of your stay.
