“Lovely setting, restaurant food should be better.”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful stay in a lovely suite overlooking the river. Excellent bed, everything clean, and though we arrived early, the receptionist visited the room to ensure that it was ready. Good staff, albeit a bit patchy due to variable supervision by management. The restaurant manager was Spanish and Superb, let down by the 'chef'. The pub food was well-catered, but 'catering' seems to be as far as the kitchen can go ... they need a good chef who respects his ingredients. The fish was a mean end tail cut, overcooked, other fish poor again next day, dry, sent back. Meat, even the steak, was overcooked. Excellent desserts let down by the main course every time. Lovely breakfasts with cheerful Italian and German young waitresses. We will return, but will not eat in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room in the old part, with a good river view.

Thank you for your review and our apologies that your food was overcooked. We constantly work hard to improve standards in all areas of the hotel and your feedback will be most useful for the kitchen team

We walked on the river footpath from Beaulieu it took 45 mins.
We booked a table on the Hotel patio.
The head waiter welcomed us when we arrived and showed us to our table overlooking the river he moved an umbrella to give us some shade.
Service was prompt and polite.
The meal was priced as a 2 or 3 course, we 4 of us opted for mains and desserts.
All our main courses were very good 3 roast before 1 pork.
The puddings were to die for Ginger beer jelly, liquorice ice cream, cheese cake and chocolate brownie all first class.
A great Sunday lunch we have and will return.

Thank you for your review of your lunch with us on the Restaurant Terrace. The walk from Beaulieu to Bucklers Hard is getting more and more popular and is most beautiful. We have a special lunch menu all week in our restaurant which represents good value for money.

We were lucky to arrive on a beautiful spring evening when the setting of this long-establshed hotel, in the historic village of Bucklers Hard, was idyllic. We were shown by friendly staff to our large & comfortable bedroom with a delightful view of the river & village - not the most modern room but classy, comfortable and well appointed. Modern isn't everything! We dined very well in the restaurant which is well run with attentive staff, good food and more good views over the river.
The perfect spot for a dose of England at its old fashioned best.

Room Tip: It's worth asking for one of the better rooms in the old hotel building if you want a view.

We have just checked out and are waiting on our taxi after a three day two night stay here. We arrived from Southampton getting off the ship at 6:30am and the hotel reception/check-in was just opening.

We were met with a warm and friendly welcome from Jose who brought us into a lovely sitting area as our rooms were still occupied, made us a pot of tea, brought us the paper and told us about the area. Elaine and David also helped make our stay top notch. The staff couldn't be better at accommodating and helping at every turn. Thank you. Lovely rooms, quirky bathrooms, great pub, walking distance to Beaulieu on picturesque path.

The attached pub is also great and staff equally as friendly. Great atmosphere all around.

Definitely recommend.

This is a very interesting hotel in a lovely location. It could be perfect, but it lets things down in the detail. The staff were very helpful, particulary at reception. We were somewhat dismayed on arrival to find the grounds awash with day-visitors to the estate, most of whom seemed to be sitting right under our bedroom window which was above the pub. But they luckily all left at around 5 pm when the estate closed its gates, after which peace and quiet reigned.

Though it was not critical, we were astonished to find on arrival that our request for a pot/cup of tea in the lounge (plus a piece of cake or scone or even biscuits) was not an option. The referral to a tea-shop opposite and the comment 'we don't do teas' misses the point. A English hotel which cannot provide its guests on arrival with tea in comfort in its own lounge has lost the plot - most B&Bs do better. Yes, there were tea making facilities in the room, but only one comfortable chair. Why do hotels think that providing one comfortable chair is enough for two people - are we supposed to sit on each other's lap? There was plenty of space for a second chair as the room is a good size.

We stayed in "Husar", very interesting decor, and a good and comfortable bed, but in need of a maintenance man with a paint-pot ... and an oilcan ... and tools to fix the extractor fan in the bathroom. The room with the best view is undoubtedly Agamemnon, which looks out directly over the river. Husar has side views and so have some of the other luxury rooms.

We ate in the restaurant and the meal was a curate's egg (good in parts): lovely and imaginative starter, very good dessert. But the main courses were not so good: dry cod and tough duck breast. Service was a little chaotic, but the staff were cheerful and attentive. Breakfast was good and there was plenty of choice.

With a little bit more attention to detail, this place could be great, though not for the disabled - too many steps and stairs and no lift.

Is it value for money: yes. Would we go back? Possibly. Would we eat again in the restaurant: probably not, solely because of the main courses. The problems, such as they are, are down to insufficient attention to detail by management - the staff are absolutely up to the job.

Room Tip: Agamemnon seems to have the best views

Thank you for your review and your candid and constructive comments.
I am extremely sorry that you were told that we didn't serve afternoon tea because this is something that we pride ourselves on. We have even opened a special servery in the Bar called 'The Galley'.
Thank you for your mainly positive other points and we will certainly be looking at the room and food issues you raised

Stayed here just one night over a lovely sunny but very busy bank holiday weekend. Quickly checked in by friendly welcoming receptionist who gave us all the information we needed regarding our room & hotel. We'd booked a basic classic room & it was much as we expected it to be, clean, large comfy bed it had everything we needed but was nothing out of the ordinary. If I wanted to be picky & these are very minor picks, the towels were a little worn & the shower pumps in the adjoining rooms are quite noisy. We had three course dinner in the restaurant which was excellent the food was cooked, served & presented perfectly & very reasonably priced. Breakfast the next morning was again excellent, there was a buffet with plenty of everything & choice of hot breakfasts cooked to order, we had the full english & were very happy with it. The location of this hotel overlooking the river is perfect & if we came back again we would stretch the budget to have a river view room & stay for a couple of days. The staff were all friendly & helpful despite it being incredibly busy. Would stay here again.

We stayed a night at The Master Builder's House for during our stay in the New Forest. It was our first wedding anniversary and all of the staff bent over backwards to make it a perfect stay for us and our little puppy Nancy. A special mention goes to Jose who looked after us in the Riverview Restaurant, even giving us a private dining room so that we could take our puppy in with us, he was so friendly and went out of his way to make us feel very special!

The hotel itself was beautiful set in stunning surroundings. Will recommend this place to friends for sure.
