“Excellent wedding venue”
Reviewed 9 June 2012

The hotel hosted our daughter's wedding breakfast, evening reception and hog roast, and overnight accommodation for the family. The atmosphere was splendid, the food was excellent and the staff really could not have been more helpful. The arrangements were the subject of uniformly admiring remarks from all of the guests. All in all, we had a delightful time and strongly recommend the Montagu Arms as a wedding venue.

Just had a lovely lunch by the fire in the drawing room with my 89 year old father. The service is outstanding, the food delicious and the setting is 5 star. I cannot wait to return when it is sunnier to sit in the delightful gardens.I cannot recommend the experience highly enough....and good value too.....

Recently attended a family wedding at the hotel.

The good: lovely location, small and friendly, food was good quality

The bad: car parking a nightmare, lay out of main function room not great (impossible to see the top table from some areas), felt very tight for space with such a large group

We had a great stay at this excellent hotel, that manages to mix the charm and elegance of an old English village property with the modern touches the modern traveler expects at a 4/5 star property. The staff were very helpful, the breakfast was quite excellent, and we really appreciated the touches like the valet parking when checking in and out so that you do not have to worry about your luggage etc, the free tea and coffee delivered to your room in the morning, and the goodie bag (bottle of water and an apple!) they give you in the morning. And their garden is stunning! Another excellent feature is use of the very good pool and spa facilities at a sister hotel (a 20 min. drive away) which is a great option to have when it is pouring with rain outside. The only negatives of our stay were the hot water failing in the room at one point, and the fact that at times there is no one at reception to answer the phone when you are calling down from the room. But this could not ruin an otherwise excellent experience and will certainly return to the hotel in the future.

The Montague Arms is a fabulous English Hotel, with excellent staff, fabulous food and comfortable rooms.
We’ve stayed several times in this hotel and each stay is better than the last! All of the rooms we’ve stayed in have been very comfortable and quiet, with great amenities. There are tea and coffee making facilities and even home baked biscuits. Also a, very welcome, large bottle of still water. Shower over the bath and separate shampoo and conditioner (hurray!), also bath/shower gel and moisturiser....
The breakfast is excellent, with fresh produce from the New Forest. Good selection of fresh fruit and cereals and wonderful freshly squeezed juices...
The Hotel has a formal ‘gourmet’ restaurant but also is affiliated to Monty’s, an excellent Brasserie right next door, which is fabulous.

Also the village street next to the hotel is a must for a stroll...!

We stayed 3 nights at the Montagu Arms, Sunday through Wednesday. Rooms are cheaper during the week, but it’s impossible to go for the B&B+dinner formula since the restaurant is closed on Monday.
We were upgraded to a superior room, nr 12, which is at the front, on the first floor above the terrace of Monty's, the pub/brasserie of the hotel but also open to the public. We slept with the window open and had no problems with the traffic, busy during the day but very calm at night, and with no people on the terrace (due to rainy evenings!) but I believe that this could cause some problems on warm summer evenings. Why was our window always open? Because the room is warm, around 22 Celsius, and this despite low temperature of 10/14 Celsius outside; so I can imagine that during the summer this room can become rather hot!
The room itself was small, bed + 2 night tables, but stretched with two seats, flat screen, table with amenities (coffee/tea/water + cookies) and large closet; masterpiece was the large bathroom in marble.
Service is outstanding, whether at the reception, lounge or restaurant: everyone is extremely friendly and helpful.
Breakfast is excellent with enough choice of cold "starters" like cereals, fruit, cheese, freshly squeezed juices, spreads, toasts, bread and Danishes, followed by your choice of hot food.
Dinner at the Terrace restaurant is very good, worth its Michelin star, but too high priced at 65£ for 3 courses and 85£ for the menu surprise without drinks and gratuity: after all, this isn’t' t London. A special mention for the sommelier who is very passionate and lots of wine knowledge that he friendly and adequately shares with you.
Full afternoon tea is very good with outstanding freshly baked and still warm scones, the best we've ever had.
Food and service at Monty's is average, not worth mentioning.
If you like Thai cuisine, a visit to the Zen garden restaurant at their sister hotel, Careys manor, in Brockenhurst is a good alternative.
Location of the Montagu hotel, in the center of (small) Beaulieu, is excellent for visiting the National motor museum and the mansion and abbey, Exbury gardens, Buckler's Hard but also for visiting Winchester, Southampton, Portsmouth and even Bournemouth. And when you return to the hotel, there are always enough (free) parking spaces.
Conclusion: I would definitely return, but go for a garden view room, and not during summer.
