“A lovely luncheon”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 via mobile

My lovely wife and I had lunch here for our wedding anniversary. The setting is fabulous. The food was delicious and the service was good. A delightful wine list helped too!
I would recommend the restaurant to everybody

The restaurant is fantastic and Pierre looks after you so well to make sure your stay is memorable. However, we stayed at the hotel for one night and felt the decor was old fashioned. The rooms could do with bringing to the same standard as the restaurant.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review us and I am truly delighted to hear how fantastically well Pierre looked after you for your Michelin Star Dining Experience.

We have an ongoing refurbishment programme at the hotel and whilst some areas have been completed others are either underway or on the list…..No area has been forgotten.

I do hope you will visit us again soon and see the on-going improvements we are continuing to make.

With kind regards

Sunil

We wanted a small, traditional location for our wedding. After talking to Clara, the wedding co-ordinator at the venue we decided to book exclusive use and set about organising our day. Our marraige took place in the middle of July; a gorgeous day surrounded by our close friends and family. Clara, Chris and the team were amazing. The beauty of the venue together with fantastic food and service was beyond our expectations. Nothing was too much trouble and all went seamlessly. I can not recommend this venue and wonderful team enough. If you are planning a wedding in Hampshire, please talk to Clara who will assist with everything including the local florist (who was also amazing). If you just want a special day/evening then this is an amazing venue. Thanks to all involved.

We were on our way through the New Forest and stopped for lunch here. What a paradise. The weather was superb and we had a table in the beautiful garden. The staff were very attentive and the food and wine very good. We are hoping to return and this time stay the night!

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for this simply delightful review and for taking the time to stop when passing.

Whilst the exterior of the Montagu Arms Hotel is always such a beautiful picture to our passer’s by, once inside (as you have experienced), the charm and beauty of this wonderful building starts to really unfold.

How fantastic to hear that you were able to enjoy your impromptu lunch in our garden.

Yes… please do come back and stay for a night or two if your time permits.

With kind regards

Sunil

We booked the hotel for a special birthday. The room was OK, somewhat careworn and very stained but forgiveable. We had booked the Michelin-starred restaurant as well, and here the trouble started. The staff continually requested that we order and took us to our table 30 minutes before our booking. Our starters, bread and amuse-bouche were fine, but we were confused by the insistence of the very sweet, staff, whose sole purpose in life was to describe each ingredient on the plate, in calling every green vegetable 'asparagus',when there was none on the menu.

The main courses were sub-standard. We own a hotel and restaurant, and had gone to the Montagu to learn what Michelin dining was all about. What was served would have not made it onto the pass in our own restaurant. The duck was cooked medium-well done and my chicken was swamped by the cheese sauce and over-zealous seasoning. But being British and not wanting to complain, we ate the food. The attentive under-manager noticed, and came across to solicit feedback, and so we gave it politely- both about the food and the untrained staff. Mollified, we settled back to competently executed desserts. The restaurant manager then arrived to pour petrol onto the embers of our dissatisfaction. He came over and told us in no uncertain terms that 'we had to understand' that he was building a new team for the future, and the training today would give good service in the future. He didn't talk about the poor food.

Well, the menu was £70 a head, and the wine eye-wateringly expensive. At Michelin levels you expect dining with a bit of ceremony and theatre- what we got was a three ring circus, with the added soupcon of couldn't care less from the management.

Fantastic Service and location! My husband and I live on the Isle of Wight, love our trips to the New Forest and had always wanted to stay here. It was the perfect spot to meet up with my Mum and Step-Father who were visiting from abroad for my birthday; easy, 10 minute drive from the ferry at Lymington, plenty of parking and ponies mingling outside. The property is well maintained and comfortable, the lawns immaculate and the kitchen garden a treat to see, as were the chickens that provided our breakfast eggs. The staff were very attentive but discrete and upon engaging in conversation very friendly. The food was great and mistake that was made with my Mum's dietary request was quickly resolved and profusely apologised for, I also was presented with petite fours after 3 course meal with a Happy Birthday candle and upon arrival they had surprised me with a helium balloon and a card in the room. The hotel is within walking distance from the Beaulieu Motor Museum (discounted entry is available from reception) and Bucklers Hard via a woodland walk. Highly recommended and a bargain rate for midweek especially as you also get free use of the leisure facilities at Carey's Manor, a 10 minute drive away in Brockenhurst which we indulged ourselves in on our way home.

Dear Guest,

What a fabulous review and I am so pleased to hear that after finally having the opportunity to come and stay with us that we met with your expectations, especially as this visit was for your birthday celebrations.

Thank you so much for your mention of our Spa facilities too located at our sister hotel with the beautiful drive through the very heart of the New Forest National Park to get there being very much part of the package.

Your kind comments have been passed onto the team and we all hope that you will be able to return again sometime.

With kind regards

Sunil.
