My wife and I stayed overnight on 28/29th August, and this is our 8th time here so they must be doing something right!
The good bits :-
The staff. Excellent in almost every respect - and Pierre is a lovely and welcoming host.
The food. We had the 7 course tasting menu, which we have had before but this time we had the wine with it. It was absolutely superb - every bit as good as the last time, only made better with the wine with each course and our superb sommelier's explanation of each wine and his reason for pairing it with our food. A Michelin star that is well deserved.
The room. Room 7 which we have stayed in a few times before with a four poster bed that is very comfortable. There is some noise as this room is over the main front entrance to the hotel but we live fairly close to a main road so this does not bother me at all. If this might be a problem just ask for a room overlooking the garden which will be much quieter.
The not so good bit. I notice reading through other reviews that more people are starting to comment on the state of the decor. Up to now I have always been very defensive of the hotels reputation, but I am afraid that things are slipping in this department. The paint was peeling over the bath in our room, the grout around the sinks was stained and the place is generally careworn. There are many places in the hotel where daily wear and tear is showing and in a four star hotel and Michelin starred restaurant this is not acceptable. The senior management/owners really need to get their collective acts together because this is starting to spoil what is an otherwise superb hotel. Please attend to these problems and don't let what is a gem of a hotel slide downhill.
