Reviewed 31 August 2014

My wife and I stayed overnight on 28/29th August, and this is our 8th time here so they must be doing something right!
The good bits :-
The staff. Excellent in almost every respect - and Pierre is a lovely and welcoming host.
The food. We had the 7 course tasting menu, which we have had before but this time we had the wine with it. It was absolutely superb - every bit as good as the last time, only made better with the wine with each course and our superb sommelier's explanation of each wine and his reason for pairing it with our food. A Michelin star that is well deserved.
The room. Room 7 which we have stayed in a few times before with a four poster bed that is very comfortable. There is some noise as this room is over the main front entrance to the hotel but we live fairly close to a main road so this does not bother me at all. If this might be a problem just ask for a room overlooking the garden which will be much quieter.

The not so good bit. I notice reading through other reviews that more people are starting to comment on the state of the decor. Up to now I have always been very defensive of the hotels reputation, but I am afraid that things are slipping in this department. The paint was peeling over the bath in our room, the grout around the sinks was stained and the place is generally careworn. There are many places in the hotel where daily wear and tear is showing and in a four star hotel and Michelin starred restaurant this is not acceptable. The senior management/owners really need to get their collective acts together because this is starting to spoil what is an otherwise superb hotel. Please attend to these problems and don't let what is a gem of a hotel slide downhill.

Knew of this hotel, but, had never been there.
Decided on a short break to finish off a special and chose the Montagu arms.

So pleased we did, it was just lovely.
The staff were helpful, efficient very friendly and genuinely happy to ensure our stay was a pleasant one.
Providing bottled water and fruit to have on our journey home was a lovely touch.
Our room ( no6 ) was spacious, clean and comfortable, would like to try a suite next time.
Breakfast was plentiful freshly cooked and hot, the mini pastries was another nice little touch.

We had dinner in Monty's in the evening and if I had any criticism it would be the lack of variety on the menu.
The addition of a few more choices would make a big difference, but, what we had was lovely.

We will return to this hotel again in the future and would definitely recommend it to others.

The wife and I visited back here and stayed the night. We had our evening reception for our wedding here.

Another lovely evening, food was great, room was great and the staff very polite and helpful.

The ingredients for the full English breakfast have been sourced locally giving everything great flavour and the portion size was ideal.

We've decided to stay there every year now!

Thanks team you made our stay very enjoyable!!

This is a lovely hotel. The staff are so attentive and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was spacious and extremely comfortable with a spotless bathroom. It was also very quiet, even though our room was above the small bar area. We did not try the restaurant as we stayed for only one night & arrived too late to eat there, but breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice. I'll admit that it may be a little on the pricey side, but we had such a lovely time we decided to go back for a special occasion & do dinner too!

Beech room is to be recommended

We went down to the New Forest for a mid week break at the Montagu Arms Hotel and had an excellent stay. The rooms were of a good size and the bathroom was clean and functional. The staff could not be more helpful and polite. We eat in the main restaurant on each evening and had the normal menu not the taster menu, we were a bit disappointed that the menu was the same on both evenings, but even so the food was excellent, well presented and prepared. The wine list was extensive and on the pricey side even at the low end but the wine we had which was recommended to us based on the food we had ordered was really good.

If you were to ask me if I would go back for another short break I would most defiantly say yes!!!

Beaulieu is a picturesque town in the heart of the New Forest, ideally located for exploring the area; the Montagu is in the centre of Beaulieu. We saw the hotel from the road on a previous trip and immediately knew we wanted to visit on a future trip.

The building and grounds are beautiful and the garden is a lovely setting for drinks.

We only took breakfast at the hotel and found that to be excellent with excellent service.

Finally, there was good guest parking availability.

This is a lovely very old and pretty hotel set in a beautiful part of England. New Forest Ponies wandered the village street and the approach to the hotel.
We entered from the upper car park having followed a little path through the pretty garden area. Plenty of outside seating was available and after our welcoming and efficient check in we sat in the garden watching the birds and sipping a very lovely Kia Royal.
Our room (6) was pretty and decorated in an old fashioned style that befitted the hotel. Limited view of the garden but that wasn't a problem. The bed was lovely and comfy and the bathroom and shower were fine. Fluffy soft bath robes, free slippers and lovely toiletries were also available.
We were on a bed breakfast and evening meal package but decided to upgrade to the 7 course taster menu with accompanying wine. Definitely worth the money. We had no idea what to expect in the way of food but every course was a surprise and a very good one at that. Both the food and the wines were explained and the reasons they went together which made it much more than just another fine dining experience. The staff were predominantly French and all very lovely and efficient without be overbearing.
In the morning we had fresh coffee delivered to our room and later had a very nice English breakfast. A limited selection of cereals fruit and yogurt were available. Miniature pastries/croissants and toast were bought to the table along with your choice of fresh juice and tea or coffee. It wasn't the most extensive choice we've had but was more than enough for us and very tasty.
One thing I would say is that a lick of paint here and there would make all the difference. Other than that it's a great place to relax, unwind and treat yourself.

Room Tip: Room 6 was quiet, comfy and pretty. We didn't see any other rooms so,cannot compare.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your time to post a review about your recent stay with us and it’s so pleasing to read that you were able to fully unwind and relax.

We have a fantastic team here at the hotel and I have already passed on your very kind feedback to them, which has been greatfully received.

We are very lucky to have the location we do and thanks to our dedicated gardeners our quintessential English Country Garden is a firm favourite for the local garden birds who our guests always love to admire. I am glad you enjoyed them whilst sipping your aperitif.

Please be assured that we have a very conscientious maintenance team and that they are currently working on any areas which need their undivided attention with a paintbrush (no areas will be forgotten)!

I hope you will return soon (please see our website for some amazing value winter deals).

With kind regards

Sunil
